Survey on the management of Alveolar Osteitis ( Dry Sockets) in South Africa

Nokaneng, Emmy Ngoakoana January 2009 (has links)
Magister Chirurgiae Dentium (MChD) / Exodontia remains one of the most regularly done procedures in dentistry in South Africa (SA) and alveolar osteitis (AO) is considered one of the most common complications associated with exodontia. Despite the extensive research done on this clinical entity, the management of AO still remains controversial. Various management protocols have been suggested in the literature, varying from prophylactic to symptomatic management of AO (Blum,2002). However, none of these management protocols have to date shown any conclusive evidence on the effectiveness and benefit over another protocol. The author was of the opinion that general dental practitioners (GDPs) in South Africa generally use preventative and treatment protocols based on what they were taught at their alumni dental schools or use protocols modified from their own clinical experience in practice. The aim of this study was to assess which treatment protocols are routinely used by GDPs in South Africa for the management of AO and suggest a scientifically sound treatment protocol for AO. The study was done in the form of a questionnaire and the participants were randomly selected from the Health Professions Council's register. The results showed that most of the GDPs in South Africa continued to use the same treatment protocol as their alumni dental school. They were of the opinion that these protocols were still clinically the most effective. Despite the plethora of intra-alveolar medicaments available, Alvogyl®still remains the medicament of choice of GDPs. As there is no evidence in the scientific literature that suggests that one intra-alveolar medicament or antibiotic is more effective than the other, the author does not encourage the use of the medicaments or antibiotics in the treatment of AO. However, by following simple measures such as improving patients' oral hygiene and using a pre-operative 0.2% chlorhexidine mouth rinse, the incidence of AO can be reduced significantly.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Liliane Bobato Licciardi.pdf: 2577430 bytes, checksum: d53f9c693da0ce838f15bc014541ad12 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-10-25 / Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a highly prevalent disease with several repercussions for patients and public health. Diabetic patient care shared between the endocrinologist and primary care health professionals in the form of continuing education is highly desirable. Objectives: To implement a treatment protocol for DM based on national guidelines, adapted to the reality of unified health system, as part of the diabetic patient care process. To perform support by an endocrinologist with the health professionals, with emphasis on permanent and transformative education. To promote the education of diabetic patients with the use of conversation maps, analyzing self-care as well as their attitudes towards the disease. To analyze the indicators related to the control of diabetes after the intervention of the specialist and application of treatment protocol. Material and Method: Prospective, quantitative, analytical and educational study on health, in type 2 diabetes, in a basic health unit chosen by the municipal manager. The project was based on the implementation of a protocol of care by an endocrinologist in partnership with health care professionals and in educational records with the help of a health team, using talk programs, during three months of follow-up. Laboratory data on glycemic control and questionnaire responses were compared statistically before and after the clinical and educational motivation and were submitted to the normality test and the Wilcoxon test, being considered significant when p <0.05. Results: Increased knowledge about the disease and improvement of glycated hemoglobin (from 9.6 to 8.0%), both significants. Conclusions: The educational intervention shows effectiveness to control Diabetes type 2 in a short period of time / Introdução: O diabetes mellitus (DM) é doença altamente prevalente com diversas repercussões para os portadores e para a saúde pública.

Multi-Tier Systems of Support and Their Impact on a Title I School

Parsons, Valerie L. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine a novel campus-based multi-tier systems of support (MTSS) framework. The framework included a standard-response protocol approach to response to intervention (RTI), integrated with a reversed process to professional learning communities, to support learning for students who were struggling to learn. Using a causal-comparative research design, a secondary analysis of quantitative data from one Title I school of approximately 500 students during the 2016-2018 school years was conducted to determine the level of impact MTSS had on reading achievement. Independent and paired samples t-tests were used to analyze iStation indicators of progress reading scores, resulting in statistically significant results. Kindergarten through 5th grade students' reading scores were significantly higher after one year of MTSS intervention than students who did not receive MTSS. One year of MTSS intervention had a statistically significant impact on both early and intermediate readers. Early readers, who began below grade level, performed significantly higher in reading achievement after just one year of MTSS as well. Intermediate readers, who began on or above grade level did not perform significantly higher in reading achievement after one year of MTSS, however. Possible long-term implications for MTSS were analyzed by comparing one year to two years of MTSS intervention. A consistently significant increase in reading scores occurred, suggesting growth that took place from one year of MTSS was enhanced by an additional year of MTSS. This novel MTSS framework could be used by campus leaders as an intervention to provide equitable learning for all students and yield statistically significant results in reading achievement in one school year. Additional research examining the impact of MTSS on Tier 1 intermediate readers receiving enrichment is recommended.
