The township trumpet educator

Thesis (MMus) -- Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study attempts to address some shortcomings of brass tuition in South Africa. It is unique in its approach in concentrating on musicians from previously disadvantaged communities, although the content of the document can be equally successfully applied to brass teaching in general. The study differs from any previous written material on this topic in that it takes the background of the previously disadvantaged educator and learner into consideration. It therefore does not assume that the learner can read music or that the educator has any formal training. The challenge is thus to write a document to provide the educator and learner with basic information in a medium that does not take anything for granted and that also offers some practical guidance in already existing projects. As a starting point a background is offered to produce a general overview of the problem. My research has convinced me that a document which consists only of a written text would not be sufficient to guide the educator and learner. I have therefore set out to accompany the text document with a practical trumpet manual. South African melodies were predominantly used as study material. This offers the opportunity to all South African learners from different cultural backgrounds to identify with the study material. My literature review includes a selection of the most commonly used beginner brass manuals in South Africa. For practical reasons I made use of abbreviations in the trumpet manual to indicate the source of a particular melody. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: GEEN

Armando Ghitalla : orchestral trumpeter, soloist, and pedagogue (1925-2001)

This study documents the performing and teaching career of Armando Ghitalla (1925-2001), and describes his pedagogical approach with an emphasis on understanding his approach to teaching embouchure. It includes as appendices a comprehensive discography of his solo, chamber, and orchestral recordings, a listing of his solo performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a selected list of former students, and copies of his advanced flexibility and transposition studies.The personal interview served as the primary source of data for this study. The subject, Armando Ghitalla, participated in an in-depth interview with the author which was recorded and transcribed. Subsequent data was gathered from former students through the use of an open-ended questionnaire. Follow-up interviews were held with several of the respondents. Previously published articles, interviews, reviews, and an unpublished recording of a trumpet clinic were also consulted.Ghitalla was a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for twenty-eight years, serving as solo trumpet of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1951-1965 and principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1965-1979. He was active as a virtuoso trumpet soloist and had a distinguished career as a trumpet professor following his retirement from the Boston Symphony. His success as an orchestral performer, solo performer, and noted pedagogue distinguish him from many of his contemporaries. / School of Music

A Scientific Characterization of Trumpet Mouthpiece Forces in the Context of Pedagogical Brass Literature

Embouchure dysfunctions, including those from acute injury to the obicularis oris muscle, represent potential and serious occupational health problems for trumpeters. Forces generated between the mouthpiece and lips, generally a result of how a trumpeter plays, are believed to be the origin for such problems. In response to insights gained from new technologies that are currently being used to measure mouthpiece forces, belief systems and teaching methodologies may need to change in order to resolve possible conflicting terminology, pedagogical instructions, and performance advice. As a basis for such change, the purpose of this study was to investigate, develop and propose an operational definition of mouthpiece forces applicable to trumpet pedagogy. The methodology for this study included an analysis of writings by selected brass pedagogues regarding mouthpiece force. Finding were extracted, compared, and contrasted with scientifically derived mouthpiece force concepts developed from scientific studies including one done at the UNT Texas Center for Music & Medicine. Results characterized five mouthpiece force principles as the basis for an operational definition of mouthpiece force. This definition recognizes the relationships between average mouthpiece force and mouthpiece force variability. Mouthpiece force principles as presented in this study may contribute to a better understanding of mouthpiece force and its link to lip related injuries. However, additional studies are needed to better understanding the relationships between how the trumpet is taught and learned and the resulting mouthpiece forces produced when playing the trumpet.

Language Learning and the Trumpet: Correlations and Advantages of Utilizing Language Learning Techniques in Trumpet Practice and Instruction

The purpose of this document is to examine the effects of learning music similarly to the way humans learn language to answer the following questions: (1) what are the correlations between language learning and music learning? and (2) how can the ideals of language learning be used to maximize the effectiveness of the music learning process? To achieve this, the stages of language acquisition is examined alongside Edwin Gordon's skill learning sequence to draw comparisons between the music and language learning processes. Examined materials include common beginning band method books and trumpet-specific materials. Common problems public school educators face, as well as solutions to those difficulties are addressed. The solutions are concepts inspired by the language learning process that can be utilized to maximize the learning at both the beginning and advanced stages of learning. A beginner level piece ("Lyra" from Trumpet Stars by H.A. Vandercook) and an advanced level piece ("Danse" from Incantation, Threne, and Danse by Alfred Desenclos) are examined thouroughly with these ideals in mind. In order to maximize results of the music learning process, incorporation of language acquisition ideals is necessary not only at the beginning of one's musical journey, but also into the later years of higher-level learning. Through this, a musician can achieve maximum results with any musical endeavor, ultimately presenting the true opportunity for expression through music.

A Pedagogical Guide to Brass Quintet Repertoire for the Trumpet

In today's rapidly changing performing arts market, trumpet players are required to be more versatile than ever. Trumpet performing jobs are diversifying and for a trumpeter, employment often requires the multi-faceted skill set that includes the ability to perform in all styles and settings ranging from jazz to classical, solo to large ensemble and brass quintet. As the demand for the brass quintet medium has grown, the study of chamber music repertoire has also become a common requirement in collegiate music programs. However, coaching in chamber music is limited, sometimes to as little as one hour per week. This coaching time is generally in the format of a single coach instructing the full chamber group, and therefore one-on-one instruction/attention is limited or nonexistent, leaving the onus of learning on the students, for whom these collegiate chamber music ensembles are their first exposure to the medium. While students have ample access to concentrated instruction for orchestral, band, and opera excerpts through the multitude of existing excerpt books, such a resource for trumpet players learning brass quintet repertoire does not yet exist. The purpose of this project is to create a succinct guide to the performance of the trumpet parts of standard brass quintet repertoire.

A Study of the Impact and Influence of the Recordings and Pedagogy of David Baldwin

David Baldwin has been the trumpet professor at the University of Minnesota since 1974. His most celebrated accomplishment is his recording of the Charlier 36 Etudes de Transcendantes and the Marcel Bitsch Vingt Etudes. In addition to this recording Baldwin has made recordings of etude books by Small, St. Jacome, Arban, Caffarelli, Smith, and the 32 Etudes de Perfectionnement also by Charlier. The quality of performance on all of these makes them excellent reference recordings. The back cover of the Etudes 32 de Perfectionnement reveals that the two-CD album, with a total run time of 115:35, was recorded over a span of four days. Endurance is a topic that all brass players confront. Baldwin wrote an etude book titled Lips of Steel that also contains two previously published articles on the topic of endurance. His ideas on endurance reveal a unique approach. This study analyzes the pedagogical concepts in those articles and in Lips of Steel. In addition to his recording projects, Baldwin has had many successful students. Thomas Rolfs and Lynn Erickson are both members of full-time professional orchestras. Larry Griffin, Scott Hagarty, and many others built their careers as professors of trumpet. An investigation of Baldwin's influence on his students further reveals how he approaches teaching and how his pedagogy has influenced his students who are now successful college professors.

Students in universities around the world study the piccolo trumpet in preparation for professional careers, but relatively few pedagogical tools exist to specifically focus on the nuanced techniques of the instrument such as articulation, range, and sound production. The purpose of this project is to create a pedagogical guide that can serve as a method for students learning the modern piccolo trumpet.

The Earliest Trumpet Method Book Extant: A Lecture Recital; Together with Three Other Recitals

This dissertation consists of four programs: one lecture recital, two recitals for solo trumpet, and one in combination with other instruments and voices. The lecture was an exploration of the contents of Modo per Imparare a Sonare di Tromba, by Girolamo Fantini, published in 16358. Fantini, who was also a trumpet player, included in his volume a wide variety of music for the natural trumpet. In addition to military signals and fanfares, the book contains exercises for developing technical ability on the trumpet, a large number of dance pieces with and without accompaniment, duets for two trumpets, and sonatas for trumpet and keyboard.

Raymond Crisara, A Trumpet Life: His Pedagogy, Philosophy and Legacy

In this project I identify the pedagogical techniques, philosophy and legacy of Raymond Crisara. I examine how his pedagogical philosophy led to Crisara's personal success as a teacher and to his students' success in their performing and teaching careers. In much the same way that Ernest Williams's legacy has been passed on to his students, Crisara's legacy is now being handed down. I have examined Crisara's pedagogical concepts and philosophy through the eyes of four former students: Dr. Todd Hastings (Professor, Pittsburg State University), Billy Hunter (Principal Trumpet, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Dr. Gary Mortenson (Dean of the School of Music, Baylor University) and Keith Winking (Professor, Texas State University) as well as from transcripts of interviews Crisara gave. Crisara extended and modified William's pedagogy through the use of a multitude of étude methods. This modification and Crisara's experience as a leading New York freelance musician greatly influenced the teaching and success of the four subjects I interviewed. While these teachers have adopted Crisara's pedagogy and philosophy largely unchanged, I found that they modified his pedagogy slightly through the use of added teaching materials never used in Crisara's career or teaching studio.

Comparison and Application of Verismo Singing Concepts to Trumpet Performance through Aria Transcription and Emulation

The link between trumpet playing and emulation of the human voice has been acknowledged by a number of prominent teachers, authors, and composers since the inception of the trumpet as a melodic instrument. This dissertation is a pedagogical guide to lyrical trumpet performance based on the verismo style of singing consistent with the authentic interpretations of operatic soprano arias by Pietro Mascagni, Ruggero Leoncavallo, and Giacomo Puccini. Included are chapters that examine various aspects of the verismo style, as well as comparison and application of late 19th-century voice pedagogy to trumpet practice and performance. This resource examines six recordings of sopranos who created or popularized operatic roles during the verismo period. Included are transcriptions of the six arias for trumpet and piano, with performance notes based on dramatic and textual contexts, as well as interpretive aspects, namely tempo, dynamics, and vibrato.
