Fuel Residence Times for Clean Combustion of Coal in a Pressurized Fluidized Bed - Cold Flow Study

Séguin, Marc-André January 2017 (has links)
Anthropogenic Climate Change is amongst the greatest challenges of human civilization. A key area that will play a large role in mitigating its effects are clean fossil fuel applications. Clean coal combustion is one such application with an urgent timeline. This can be achieved with an oxygen-fired pressurized fluidized bed combustor with downstream carbon capture and sequestration. In relation to pressurized fluidization processes, understanding the influence of pressure on bed hydrodynamics and in turn their effect on parameters including fuel residence time is essential. For the proposed combustor, the heat exchanger boiler tubes are submerged in the fluidized bed such that the effect of a horizontal tube bank on the fuel residence time is also of great importance. The main focus of present work was to evaluate the impact of gas velocity, pressure, presence of a tube bank and fuel feed rate on the average fuel residence time. Experiments were conducted under cold flow conditions in a pilot-scale pressurized fluidized bed with an inner diameter of 0.15 m. The fluidization material was relatively large glass beads (1.0 mm in diameter) while the fuel particles were simulated with smaller glass beads (40 to 138 μm in diameter), susceptible to entrainment. Operating pressures and superficial gas velocities tested were between 101.3 and 1200 kPa and 0.4 and 1.1 m/s respectively. To simulate coal combustors, experiments were then conducted in a continuous mode where the fuel particles were continuously fed to the fluidized bed of large particles over a desired period of time. Downstream, entrained particles were continuously captured to determine the entrainment rate and mass of fuel particles inside the fluidized bed at steady state, which yielded the average fuel residence time. The combination of elevated pressure with the tube bank present was found to enhance gas bubble break up and reduce the average gas bubble size. In turn, this increased the average fuel residence time of 83 μm particles by nearly 3 fold to a value of 77 s in comparison to 27 s at atmospheric pressure. The effect of gas velocity was not found to be statistically significant under the range tested. Similarly the effect of increased fuel feed rate by 50% neither had a statistically significant impact.

Efeito da geometria na ebulição nucleada de refrigerantes halogenados em tubos horizontais / Geometry effects in nucleate boiling of halocarbon refrigerants in horizontal tubes

Silva, Evandro Fockink da 16 September 2005 (has links)
The research reported herein is a theoretical and experimental investigation of nucleate boiling heat transfer in an isolated tube and a row of three horizontal tubes. The literature review provided enough information to raise the intervening physical parameters and several correlations. The experimental bench has been developed and adapted to perform experiments with several refrigerants, three different tube diameters, and to accommodate a row of three parallel tubes. The experiments have been carried out with refrigerants R-11, R-123 and R-134a. Heating of the brass tubes has been provided by tubular electrical heaters inserted inside the tubes. The heat flux varied from 1 to 40 kW/'M POT.2'. Experiments have been carried out by successively heating two and three tubes. Effects of boiling in tubes underneath (lower level) have been investigated. Finally a correlation for the heat transfer coefficient in successive tubes of a tube bank has been developed. The correlation presents good accuracy with respect to data from the present investigation.

Two Phase Flow Induced Vibrations for Tube Banks in Cross Flow: Creating an Experimental Facility

Dam, Richard F. 04 1900 (has links)

Two phase flow induced vibrations is a field that has many inherent modelling difficulties, making research in the area challenging. In order to study the problem more closely, a two phase flow loop using Freon 11 had been designed and commissioned at McMaster University. The initial design required some modifications to make the loop as "user friendly" as possible. The final result meets this desired capability.

The loop was designed so that research into vibrations in tube bundles could be carried out. A test section had been designed to facilitate this task. However, this design also required modifications. Additionally, new vibration monitoring instrumentation making use of light was developed to avoid the detrimental effects of Freon 11. The introduction of these items has resulted in a complete facility for the purpose of studying two phase flow induced vibrations. Preliminary experiments revealed a problem relating to tube tuning. Generally, the results are promising and some interesting new phenomena were observed as well.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Vibração em feixes tubulares. / Tube banks vibration.

Arbore, Lucian 30 June 2016 (has links)
Results from a numerical simulation are reported for amplitudes of cross-flow induced vibrations at the fluid elastic instability regime in a tube bank. The tube bank has identical geometry and characteristics as for an experimental facility described in the literature, for which there are experimental measurements of the amplitudes of vibrations at the fluid elastic instability regime. The rotated triangular array has a pitch ratio of 1.375 and consists of 1 movable tube surrounded by 134 rigid tubes. The numerical simulations were accomplished with a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software. For the region around each tube, a mesh with elements dimensions growing geometrically normal to the tube was considered, with growing factor 1.13, and the dimension for the element adjacent to the tube wall was set to 0.1% of the tube external diameter. The flow was considered incompressible, monophasic, turbulent and two-dimensional for the numerical simulation. The flow data considered were the same as for the experiments at the facility. The results presented in this paper for the amplitudes obtained by numerical simulation are compared with the experimental results obtained in the above mentioned experimental facility. The differences between the calculated values and the experimental values are acceptable. This show that in the near future there is the possibility to use CFD for these kind of problems.
