In the Spring and Summer of 1942, the population of West Coast Japanese were rounded up and forcibly moved from their homes to temporary camps and soon after to ten permanent relocation camps in the interior Western United States. This thesis traces the history of one such camp, the Tule Lake Relocation Center. In this thesis I argue that from its inception the Tule Lake Center was unique among the ten camps. The decision to build a permanent center at Tule Lake was based upon the unique potential the area provided for agriculture on a huge scale. The other permanent centers were located in remote inhospitable areas where large scale agricultural operations were impossible.
The introduction outlines my key research questions and the methodology used. This section identifies my central theme, agriculture at the Tule Lake Relocation Center, and situates my own research within the existing scholarship on the Japanese-American Relocation. Chapter one is a review of the factors, including racial animosity, and wartime hysteria leading up to the decision to relocate every Japanese individual living on the West Coast. Chapter two discusses the little known history of how and why Tule Lake was chosen for a permanent relocation center. Chapter three documents the commitment of the War Relocation Authority to a massive agricultural project at the Tule Lake Center.
Chapter four recounts the tumultuous registration period at Tule Lake. In the winter of 1943, the War Relocation Authority and the War Department combined to administer a loyalty questionnaire to every internee over the age of 17, revealing shocking disloyalty at Tule Lake. Chapter five discusses the decision of the War Relocation Authority to segregate Japanese Americans declared disloyal, and the choice of Tule Lake as the segregation center. Chapter six discusses the events, in particular the tragic accidental death of a farm worker, which led to the end of large scale agriculture at Tule Lake.
In conclusion, I assert that War Relocation Authority blunders, including a lack of cultural sensitivity, led directly to the cessation of the agricultural project at Tule Lake Segregation Center.

Evaluation of current agricultural practices and organophosphorus insecticide use in relation to ring-necked pheasant numbers at Klamath Basin Refuges, CaliforniaGrove, Robert Allan 28 February 1995 (has links)
A declining population of ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) was
studied at Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge (TLNWR) from the summer of 1990
through the spring of 1993. Pheasant densities/50 ha at TLNWR in 1989, 1991, and
1992 were considerably lower (16.86, 8.49, and 6.81) than the >62 density seen in
the mid-1950s. Mean body weight of hen pheasants at TLNWR was significantly
lower than hens at nearby Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge (LKNWR) which
was not intensively farmed. Mean tarsal lengths of hens at TLNWR were also
significantly shorter than hens at LKNWR, suggesting reduced skeletal growth and
potential nutritional problems. The lack of adequate cover was responsible for poor
early nest success at TLNWR. Later in the season, spring planted crops provided
adequate cover to conceal nesting hens; however, only 0.21 young in 1991 and
0.02 young in 1992 were produced per radio-equipped hen. These rates are
extremely low compared to rates required to maintain a stable population. Most
adult mortality occurred during the spring and early summer months at TLNWR
before crops provided adequate cover, and long before pesticide applications. The
main predator of the pheasants was the golden eagle (Aquila chrvsaetos). Of special
concern at TLNWR was pheasant and other wildlife exposure to anticholinesterase
(antiChE) insecticides used on agricultural croplands at the refuge. Direct toxicity of
antiChE compounds (in this case methamidophos) killed 2 young pheasants, but no
adult radio-equipped hens died as a direct result of insecticide intoxication. This
finding was of particular interest because 15% of the adult pheasants collected in
and around potato fields had 55% brain ChE inhibition. The extent of the effects of
insecticide exposure on the survivorship of pheasant young was uncertain as they
were not radio-equipped. The overriding factor impacting the pheasant population at
TLNWR and to a lesser extent LKNWR was poor habitat, especially in the spring
when most mortality occurred. The poor habitat also resulted in extremely low
recruitment (up to 1 September). Nearly all adult mortality and most of the low
recruitment occurred before the insecticide spray season. The population was nearly
extirpated during the severe winter of 1992-93. / Graduation date: 1995

New Caledonia (1698-1700) was Scotland’s largest independent colonial venture. The scheme’s collapse crippled the country financially and was an important factor in the Anglo-Scottish Union of 1707. This project explores the identity of Scottish settlers who attempted to colonize the Darien region of modern Panama. Colonial identity is assessed by reconstructing the Scottish dialogue about the natural world, the aboriginal population, and the commonwealth. I contend that the ideology of improvement that shaped Scottish perceptions of utility and fertility in the Darien became a powerful moral discourse used to critique the colonists. This paper also chronicles Scottish aspirations to found an empire of trade and civility, uncovering the fundamental problems created by the idealization of the Tule as eager subjects of this new empire. Finally, I argue that Caledonia’s food shortages not only threatened the colonial government’s legitimacy, they also exposed divergent ideals of the commonwealth among the settlers.

Investigating the Link Between Surface Water and Groundwater in the Tule Lake Subbasin, Oregon and CaliforniaPischel, Esther Maria 13 August 2014 (has links)
Water allocation in the upper Klamath Basin of Oregon and California has been challenging. Irrigators have increasingly turned to groundwater to make up for surface water shortages because of shifts in allocation toward in-stream flows for Endangered Species Act listed fishes. The largest increase in groundwater pumping has been in and around the Bureau of Reclamation's Klamath Irrigation Project, which includes the Tule Lake subbasin in the southern part of the upper Klamath Basin. Previous groundwater flow model simulations indicate that water level declines from pumping may result in decreased flow to agricultural drains in the Tule Lake subbasin. Agricultural drains on the Klamath Project are an important source of water for downstream irrigators and for the Tule Lake and Lower Klamath Lake National Wildlife Refuges. To better assess the impact of increased pumping on drain flow and on the water balance of the groundwater system, flow data from agricultural drains were evaluated to investigate the changes that have taken place in groundwater discharge to drains since pumping volumes increased. Additionally, a fine-grid groundwater model of the Tule Lake subbasin was developed based on the existing regional flow model. The fine-grid model has sufficient vertical and horizontal resolution to simulate vertical head gradients, takes advantage of time-series data from 38 observation wells for model calibration, and allows agricultural drains to be more explicitly represented. Results of the drain flow analysis show that the groundwater discharge to agricultural drains has decreased by approximately 4000 hectare-meters from the 1997-2000 average discharge. Most of this decrease takes place in the northern and southeastern portions of the subbasin. Results of the groundwater model show that the initial source of water to wells is groundwater storage. By 2006, approximately 56% of the water from wells is sourced from agricultural drains.
