Nature and Origin of the East Traverse Mountains Mega-Landslide, Northern Utah (USA)Chadburn, Rodney Ryan 11 December 2020 (has links)
The East Traverse Mountains are an E-W trending mountain range dividing Utah and Salt Lake valleys in northern Utah. Geologically perplexing, the nature of the East Traverse Mountains has been under investigation for 140 years. Previously, the mountain range was proposed to be a dismembered but still coherent down-faulted block that experienced 4 km of post-thrusting extension within the Charleston-Nebo thrust sheet. However, new insight on the origin of the East Traverse Mountains indicate that it is a mega landslide, roughly ~100 km3 in size, which catastrophically slid from the upper reaches of the Little-Cottonwood stock to its present-day location. The primary evidence for this landslide includes two unusual dike swarms whose roots are in the Wasatch Range and whose upper reaches are now in the East Traverse Mountains, 16 km to the SW. A swarm of pebble dikes, indicative of porphyry mineralization is found at the center of the East Traverse Mountains and contain pebbles of Little-Cottonwood stock as well as two other intrusions found at the center of a mineralized zone. These granitic clasts have phyllic alteration, contain molybdenite grains and are sourced from a subeconomic molybdenum-copper porphyry deposit located 16 km to the NE. The other dike swarm occurs on the SE corner of the range near Alpine, Utah, which contains various andesitic and phaneritic dikes of intermediate-felsic compositions (56-69 wt.% SiO2) with localized marble on their southern margin. These dikes range in U-Pb ages from 36-29 Ma. Moreover, other evidence includes brecciation of the entire mountain range as well as along the slide path of this landslide. Breccia, as well as pseudotachylyte and cataclasite have been discovered that formed in the rapid transportation of the 1-2 km thick detached block. Devitrified pseudotachylyte veins range in thickness from 1 cm to 1 m and are present in the roof zone of the pluton. Sixteen kilometers of sliding caused 70-80% of the Oquirrh Group rocks of the East Traverse Mountains to be fractured to less than 1-inch diameter clasts in breccias and broken formations, as documented by 16 years of mining. U-bearing opal replaced significant areas of brecciated volcanic rocks when hot water seeped into highly-fractured, argillically altered rock. U-Pb ages of 6.1 ± 0.9 Ma from these opalite areas could provide a minimum age for the emplacement of the mountain block. Underlying the East Traverse Mountains slide block is a layer of fallout tuff deposited in the Jordan River Narrows member with 40Ar/39Ar ages of 6.62 ± 0.07 Ma which provides a maximum age of emplacement. Therefore, we propose that the East Traverse Mountains mega-landslide occurred between 6.1 ± 0.9 Ma and 6.62 ± 0.07 Ma. Our interpretation for the East Traverse Mountains mega-landslide model builds upon previous research and data, with the addition of these recent findings. This new interpretation is crucial for understanding the potential for large normal fault systems to create significant landslide hazards.

The Role of Cenozoic Oceanic Plateau Collision in the Tectonic Growth of Western North AmericaErin Elizabeth Donaghy (18243379) 15 April 2024 (has links)

This dissertation uses a multidisciplinary basin analysis approach to document the sedimentary, structural, and volcanic response to Cenozoic oceanic plateau collision and translation along the northwestern Cordillera. During this time, two fragments of oceanic plateau accreted in the Pacific Northwest (Siletzia terrane) and in southeastern Alaska (Yakutat terrane). My research aims to test if the Siletzia and Yakutat terranes have an early shared history as the same spreading ridge-centered plateau in the Pacific Northwest and constrain timing of breakup and translation of the Yakutat terrane to southeastern Alaska. Chapter 2 focuses on development of a new U-Pb zircon geochronology technique to aid in a more accurate and precise understanding of sediment routing systems. The goal of developing this technique is to utilize it in pinpointing the source regions along the northwestern Cordillera supplying sediment to the basin on the Yakutat terrane as it made its northward journey to southeastern Alaska. Chapter 3 focuses on creating a regional chronostratigraphy for deep-marine Cenozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the peripheral rock sequence on the northern Olympic Peninsula in Washington. These sedimentary rocks directly overlie the Siletzia plateau and record basin evolution before, during, and following its collision to the continental margin. Chapter 4 uses detailed lithofacies mapping and U-Pb geochronology of metasedimentary and volcanic rocks in the Olympic subduction complex to document the structural response to seamount subduction in the Eocene. Seamount subduction began shortly after collision of the Siletzia oceanic plateau to the Pacific Northwest and played a critical role in development of the early forearc region and Ancestral Cascades arc. Chapter 5 compares the lowermost sedimentary and geochronologic basin record on both Siletzia and Yakutat terranes to test if they have an early shared history in the Pacific Northwest.

The Tocantinzinho deposit is located on the Tapajós Gold Province and is the largest gold deposit within Province, with 53,9 tons of gold. Its formation begins with a granodioritic magmatism around 2005Ma, followed by a granitic magmatism 10 Ma latter. The Tocantinzinho granite is composed by two main facies, syenogranite (1996±2Ma) and monzogranite (1989±1Ma), and by aplite and pegmatite bodies, suggesting a fluid-rich magmatism at shallow depth. Andesite dikes (1998±8Ma) are intrusive in both rocks. Sharp fragments of those rocks along contacts and minor mingling with granitic magma suggest a multiphase magmatism at distinct timing. The first dikes have intruded within granite when it was crystalizing, thus a minimum age of 1975Ma was estimated. Cooling rates of plutonic rocks vary from 3.6 to 14.7°C/Ma, with an average of 7.5°C/Ma, suggesting vertical exhumation processes were minor. The elongated geometry of granite along with sin-magmatic strike-slip tectonics of andesite corroborate the predominance of horizontal movements. Geochemical analysis show high-K calk-alkaline affinity and niobium anomaly indicator of two possible geotectonic settings for these rocks: Andean-type continental arc or post-collisional one. Considering the genetic relationship between magmatism, strike-slip faults, and low cooling rates, a post-collisional setting is more likely. The geochemical signature, ages and style of tectonism allow us to compare those rocks with the ones from Creporizão Intrusive Suite (1997-1957Ma). Dacite dikes (1992±2Ma) cut across all other rocks, but the temporal relationship among them remains misunderstood, due to the geochemical signature similar to the anorogenic rocks, suggesting it belongs to a distinct and latter magmatic series. Indeed, the dated zircons were probably inherited from host rocks. The mineralized area is restricted to a domain constrained by two major sinistral strike-slip N100°-130E°E faults that comprises the Tocantinzinho granite and sub-volcanic rocks, which were hydrothermally altered, brittle deformed and mineralized during two phases. The first one is characterized by breccias and microfractures infilled with muscovite (1864±5Ma) and pyrite, which contains low gold grades and are restricted to the Tocantinzinho granite. The second phase was controlled by strike-slip and normal tectonics generating tension gashes veins and pull apart breccias infilled with quartz, chlorite, calcite, albite, rutile, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and gold. The gold grade can reach up to 70 ppm in some sulfide-rich veins. These structures are parallel and mainly trends N30-60°E, showing textures and orientated minerals typical of syn-tectonic infilling. Based on petrographical features and argon ages two hypothesis were proposed for the ore genesis: the first one consider a genetic relationship between magmatism and ore fluids for first mineralization stage and the second hypothesis consider a reactivation of pre-existing faults by an extensional tectonism related to the Maloquinha Intrusive Suite magmatism (ca.1880Ma) for this phase. The second mineralization phase is considered as formed as consequence of tectonic reactivation at ca. 1880Ma, in both hypothesis. Both phases in both hypothesis were classified as magmatic-hydrothermal ore mineralization and might be classified as intrusion-related gold systems. However, new field works are important in order to identify and characterize the nature and source of hydrothermal fluids, as well as ore dating and new geochemical and geochronological data of sub-volcanic rocks are imperative to better understand the genesis and evolution of the Tocantinzinho gold deposit. Such results, strongly linked to the fact that the tectonic control seem significant, may help for future exploration and exploitation programs.

Lithology and provenance of late Eocene - Oligocene sediments in eastern Taranaki Basin margin and implications for paleogeographyHopcroft, Bradley Scott January 2009 (has links)
The latest Eocene and Oligocene was a time of marked paleoenvironmental change in Taranaki Basin, involving a transition from the accumulation of coal measures and inner shelf deposits to the development of upper bathyal environments. Up until the end of the Early Oligocene (Lower Whaingaroan Stage) Taranaki Basin had an extensional tectonic setting. Marine transgression culminated in the accumulation of condensed facies of the Matapo Sandstone Member of the lower part of the Ngatoro Group. During the Late Oligocene (Upper Whaingaroan Stage) Taranaki Basin's tectonic setting changed to one of crustal shortening with basement overthrusting westward into the basin on Taranaki Fault. The major part of the Ngatoro Group in thickness, including the Tariki Sandstone Member, Otaraoa Formation, Tikorangi Formation and Taimana Formation, accumulated in response to this change in tectonic setting. Various methods of stratigraphic and sedimentological characterisation have been undertaken to evaluate the stratigraphy of the Ngatoro Group. Wireline log records have been calibrated through particle sizing and carbonate digestion of well cuttings. A suite of wireline motifs have been defined for formations and members of the Ngatoro Group. The integration with other lithological and paleoenvironmental data sources has helped to better define the Late Eocene - Oligocene stratigraphy and sedimentary facies for eastern Taranaki Basin margin. U-Pb geochronology by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has been used to determine detrital ages for over 350 zircons from 13 samples of Late Eocene - Oligocene sandstone samples in eastern Taranaki Basin and correlative onshore North Island units. The spread of ages (1554 - 102 Ma) and the proportion of ages in particular age bands integrated with modal petrography data have aided provenance evaluation. A range of source rocks contributed to the Late Eocene - Oligocene sedimentary units analysed, mainly the Waipapa Terrane (Early Permian to Late Jurassic) as shown by 206Pb/238U zircon ages and the abundance of fine-grained sedimentary rock fragments observed in samples. The Median Batholith (i.e. Darran/Median Suite and Separation Point Suite) is also identified as a significant source, indicated by Early Triassic to Early Jurassic and Early Cretaceous 206Pb/238U zircon ages and an abundance of quartz in samples. Other minor sources identified include Murihiku and Caples Terranes, Rakaia Sub-terrane and possibly the Karamea Batholith. The Tariki Sandstone and the Hauturu Sandstone have the same source, with the main 206Pb/238U zircon ages of aggregated samples (124 - 116 Ma and 121 Ma, respectively) consistent with a Separation Point Suite/Median Batholith (124 - 116 Ma) source. Derivation of sediments from a landmass that existed to the east and southeast of the Wellington area has been inferred for the Late Eocene - Oligocene units, with subsequent migration of sediments northward into Taranaki Basin and the Waikato Region (i.e. Te Kuiti Group depocentre) via longshore drift. New provenance data have been used to revise understanding about the development of eastern Taranaki Basin margin through the Late Eocene to earliest Miocene. Three new paleogeography maps are presented for the Runangan (Late Eocene), Lower Whaingaroan (Early Oligocene) and Upper Whaingaroan (early-mid-Oligocene). New paleogeography interpretations illustrate a dramatic change in the basin development between Matapo Sandstone (Lower Whaingaroan) and Tariki Sandstone (Upper Whaingaroan) deposition, consistent with an Upper Whaingaroan age for the start of reverse movement on Taranaki Fault.

This work objective the characterization of the petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and metamorphism of ortoderivate rocks that belong to Brusque Metamorphic Complex BMC) in two regions: Itapema and Botuverá, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Within these, good expositions of mafic and metaultramafic rocks occur in both regions. In Itapema, bodies of peraluminous leucogranites were also investigated. Around Botuverá were investigated diabase dikes and lamprophyres. The analysis of the conditions of generation and sources of magmatic events responsible for the development of these rocks was essential for the characterization and assessment of the significance of these tectonic units in the BMC, and it were placed during the pre-, syn-and post-collisional period of it’s evolution. The regional foliation of the complex is represented by a low angle S2 surface in Itapema region and a higher angle foliation in the region of Botuverá, folded by actuation of the D3 event. Petrography and Hb-Pl geothermometry data indicate that the main foliation of the mafic schists was generated in conditions between the transition of greenschist and lower amphibolite facies. The pre-orogenic magmatism of the Brusque Metamorphic Complex consists of lenses of mafic-ultramafic, products from the metamorphism of basalts, gabbros, related cumulate rocks and volcanogenic sediments. These rocks have a tholeiitic affinity and high contents of LREE and LILE elements. The analysis of incompatible elements ratios, the position of igneous bodies intercalated with the metasediments and the absence of oceanic crust suggest that the basalts were placed in an intra-continental plate environment, synchronous with sedimentation of the basin. The initial εNd values between -2.96 and 5.05 for the metavolcanics of Itapema and between -0.14 and -6.97 for the rocks of Botuverá indicate the involvement of Paleoproterozoic crust on the genesis of these magmas. The generally high 87Sr/86Sr values justify the involvement of crust, and the highest values found in Botuverá, highlight the greater involvement of this component in the region. Syn tectonic magmatism is represented by bodies of peraluminous leucogranite showing emplacement concordant to S2 foliation. Compositional parameters of these rocks characterized by low ratios K2O/Na2O, CaO/Na2O and LaN / YbN, low levels of Rb, Sr, Zr, Y, Yb and Lu, are consistent with magmas generated from partial melting of pelitic rocks, with limited participation of differentiation processes. In the region of Botuverá the occurrence of diabase dykes and lamprophyres cutting the regional metamorphic units indicates that its position is post-collisional. Geochemically show affinity between the tholeiitic and shonshonitic series. The distribution pattern of trace elements and the Th/Yb for Ta/Yb ratios indicate that extraction of diabase occur from an enriched mantle source, with the presence of rutile and garnet in the residue and heavily contaminated by crust. These characteristics are similar to those found in rocks post-collisional basaltic volcanic in south Brazil. The scattered values of єNd (618) in basic terms, ranging between -13.74 and +5.52 highlight the heterogeneity of mantle supply and reinforce the importance of crustal component in the generation of these rocks. A concordant age of 618 ± 8.7 Ma by U-Pb (LA-ICP-MS) zircon method were obtained, marking a early magmatic processes of post-collisional Brasiliano orogeny in the region of Botuverá.

Unraveling the Tectonic History of the Aurek Metagabbro within the Seve Nappe Complex, Scandinavian Caledonides / Undersökningsstudie av metagabbro i Aurek och dess tektoniska utveckling inom Seveskollan, Skandinaviska KaledonidernaRousku, Sabine January 2021 (has links)
The Scandinavian Caledonides form a mountain range comprising nappe stacks of numerous far-travelled thrust sheets. The thrust sheets consist of diverse lithologies representing pre- and synorogenic sedimentary and igneous rocks subsequently metamorphosed to various degrees, from the Late Neoproterozoic to Middle Devonian. In particular, (ultra)-high-grade metamorphic rocks have been recorded in the Seve Nappe Complex (SNC), extending >1000 km along strike of the Scandinavian Caledonides. Included in the SNC of northern Sweden is the Vássačorru Igneous Complex (VIC), consisting of bimodal magmatic suites, that formed c. 845 Ma. Fieldwork was conducted in the Kebnekaise mountains of northern Sweden, focusing on the high-grade Aurek metagabbro within the VIC of the SNC. Aurek is a key locality representing both initial stages of Iapetus Ocean formation in the Ediacaran and later stage Caledonian subduction affinities, from the collision between Laurentia and Baltica. In this study, petrological description, zircon U-Pb geochronology, mineral chemistry analysis, whole rock composition, and thermodynamic modeling was performed. Zircon U-Pb geochronology yielded protolith ages of 609±2.5 Ma, and 614±2.3 Ma, suggesting the Aurek metagabbro to not be part of the VIC, as has previously been described. The age of Aurek can instead be correlated to the Kebnekaise Dyke Swarms at c. 607 Ma, in the Kebnekaise mountains. Whole rock major and trace element data of e.g., Al2O3 (15.0 – 25.0 ppm) versus SiO2 (46.0 – 53.0 ppm), Rb (2.0 – 18.0 ppm), Zr (8.0 – 58.0 ppm) versus Y (2.7 – 18.0 ppm), Th/Yb ratio 0.25 – 2.0 and Nb/Yb ratio 1.30 – 5.14, indicate assimilation of continental crust. These major and trace element signatures show that the protolith of the Aurek metagabbro probably was emplaced in a continental rift setting in the Ediacaran. Semi-quantitative thermodynamic modeling from this study present blueschist to amphibolite facies conditions for the Aurek metagabbro at 11.8 – 12.6 kbar and 480 – 565 oC, confirming the unit experienced subduction, possibly in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician. The metamorphic grade and protolith age show similar features to correlative rock sequences in the Tsäkkok Lens, south of Aurek, in Norrbotten. Consequently, this study concludes that subduction, exhumation and subsequent deformation for Aurek, probably was equivalent to those of the Tsäkkok Lens, extending the HP affinities of the SNC further north in the Swedish Caledonides.

Vznik a vývoj davelského vulkanického komplexu / Petrogenesis and evolution of the Davle Volcanic ComplexSantolík, Václav January 2021 (has links)
The Davle Volcanic Complex (DVC) situated in the Teplá-Barrandian unit (TBU) of the Bohemian Massif, is considered as a Neoproterozoic-Cambrian magmatic arc that developed on the northern active margin of Gondwana supercontinent during Cadomian accretionary orogeny. This study combines data obtained from fieldwork, petrography, rock-forming mineral microanalysis, major and trace element analysis, Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic systematics and U-Pb zircon geochronology in order to reveal the petrogenesis and evolution of the DVC. At least three-stage metamorphism including Cadomian seafloor alteration, Variscan regional metamorphism as well as contact metamorphism related to the emplacement of the Central Bohemian Plutonic Complex affected the DVC. The studied rocks follow calc-alkaline trend whereas tholeiitic trend previously reported is rather related to younger magmatic events. The northern part of the DVC is dominated by felsic subvolcanic (plagiogranite), volcanic (dacite- rhyolite) and pyroclastic (dacitic-rhyolitic tuffs and breccias) rocks with a few outcrops of basaltic andesite-andesite pillow lavas documenting the subaqueous activity of the DVC. These rocks are Na-rich, but K-poor, the plagiogranite contains albite most likely primary in origin, and exhibit highly radiogenic εNd values (~ +6 to +11),...
