Začátky amerického feminismu / The beginnigs of American feminism

Mergeščíková, Tamara January 2011 (has links)
in English The objective of this thesis is to trace and depict the beginnings of feminist thought in America. Its aim is to show how feminist thought was developed within the Puritan/Protestant community as well as its effect on the African-Americans who were integrated into the Puritan community as an inferior race through the slave trade. The thesis uses qualitative and quantitative methods of research. A variety of primary and secondary material is used to describe the beliefs of the people in the era, such as the division of the male and female spheres of influence. The views of both men and women are provided to create a more objective description of the era and its beliefs. In addition, the subject is considered from the American point of view as well as the point of view of foreigners, such as the French historian and political thinker Alexis de Tocqueville. Furthermore, feminism is depicted in various realms of the society - in literature, in the theatre, in the political and in the social life. The quantitative methods include statistical data on wages to prove women were not fairly treated in comparison to men, as well as data from the 1860 Census to prove the drastic effects of slavery upon African-American women and the immorality within the white society's marriage institution. Swedes establishing overseas : Cultural differences in management between Sweden and USA

Forsberg, Christian, Mörner, Emelie January 2006 (has links)
Establishing Swedish corporations in different parts of the world means that companies will face other corporate cultures, different or partly different, from their own. Cultures in USA seem quite similar to the Swedish culture, but there are most certainly differences, even if they exist under the surface. Cultural differences can cause further problems than those that normally exist in the initial phase of an establishment. The question we wanted to bring an answer to in this project was: Which cultural related differences might cause problems for a Swedish company, establishing in the USA, from an organizational point of view? The purpose with this report is to find out which cultural differences there are between the Swedish management and the American. To se possible differences we first studied the two cultures one by one. We interviewed six companies that are established in USA. They all had Swedish owners, who also are managers in the companies. Together with extensive empirical studies and theories on management, as well as on national differences between cultures, we came to a conclusion: If the Swedish manager is aware of the existence of cultural differences, and therefore is adjustable and observant to any differences, there should not be any problems neither to establish nor to lead a company in USA.

Casualties among Unauthorized Migrants at the Arizona Border : A Race, Class and Gender Perspective

Hällgren, Linnea January 2012 (has links)
This bachelor thesis deals with the increasing borders control/security between nations, especially between the, so-called third world and first world nations. Security and wall building is something that is becoming a more and more current issue at borders. Today we live under the scare of terrorism which excuses this behavior. The state seeks to gain more control over whom they are letting in. This has, created harsher laws for immigration, and especially unauthorized such, creating a global apartheid and mistreatment of unauthorized migrants. This study focuses on unauthorized migration and especially on the casualties of such attempts to cross the border betweenMexicoandArizonacaused by walking through the Sonoran desert. The United States has during the 90’s and this the 2000’s deliberately been pushing unauthorized migration routes further from urban areas out in to remote desert in order to discourage it. This has led to a rising number of deaths among unauthorized migrants trying to cross into theUnited StatesfromMexicoand other Latin American countries. This bachelor thesis focuses on the statistics taken from border patrol reports that were listed in the newspaper the Arizona Daily Star. It also contains an interview made with a volunteer from the organization No More Deaths/No Mas Muertes, an organization working for the prevention of deaths in the Sonoran desert and more human immigration policies. A perspective of this bachelor thesis is also gender: how these policies affect gender, and whether women who migrate unauthorized are exposed to more risks than men. The conclusion of the essay is that the majority who migrate unauthorized are male. The women who migrate, however, are exposed to more risks. They are more prone to travel with family or children making them more vulnerable due to the extra responsibility. Traveling alone, they are more vulnerable to sexual assaults. Sexual assaults can come from coyotes, other migrants and border patrol. Risks for human trafficking exist not only while crossing the border but also after deportation.
