Research for the learning and teaching of mathematics: an emergent design

Thesis (MEd (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This thesis deals with my practice as a mathematics teacher at a post-matric programme at the University of Stellenbosch. I use aspects of three different approaches to social science research, namely phenomenology, narrative inquiry and the discipline of noticing, to research my personal experiences. These experiences include learning mathematics at school and university as well as teaching mathematics in a post-matric programme. These experiences are presented by means of briefbut- vivid descriptions, journal entries and records of classroom conversations and are reflected on in the light of relevant literature. The reflections and readings lead to alternative ways of thinking about learning, teaching and researching as found in the cognitive theory of enactivism. These new ways of thinking are used to reflect on my current practice by focusing particularly on knowing, listening and noticing and are used to imagine what my practice could look like in the future. My approach, framework, focus areas and imagined practice all emerge during the research process. This process is presented through ‘behind-the-scene’ reflections on my own experiences of doing research. By presenting these experiences, this thesis also deals with the process of doing research – in particular it deals with the process of using an emergent design.

Marching to a different beat : conversations about diversity with minority women students at a historically white university

The transition from exclusion to inclusion of minority cultures in these university campuses has not been without its challenges for those students. This study provides a record of the experiences of five coloured women who are undergraduate students at Stellenbosch University (SU), a predominantly white institution. The approach used is feminist, grounded participatory action research. Despite institutional policy initiatives, the Coloured undergraduate students in the study did not experience the university environment as inclusive. What emerged was that the women had an acute awareness of othernesses and their own minority status. Factors such as the small number of minority students and the absence of symbols or icons that reflect and acknowledge the presence of diverse cultures exacerbate their feeling of being in the minority or 'tolerated otherness'. The women experienced SU as a university where established practices and traditions continue despite the changing demographics of the student population. This type of organisational culture in which covert and overt resistance to transformation is the norm acts as a constraint on the political will to move from policy to practice and entrenches the marginalisation of minority groups. The study found that integration is left largely to personal initiative. Personal variables such as resilience, strategies for coping with stress and the resolution of identity issues, appear to playa key role in academic success. However, academic success is not always accompanied by successful social integration. Social isolation was found to have a negative impact on personal and academic confidence. Although the women in the study have had relatively negative experiences of transformation, their willingness to engage in reflexive praxis and dialogue could serve as a challenge to SU to engage in a process which acknowledges the concerns, resistance and experience of all role-players. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die transformasie van histories-blanke Suid-Afrikaanse universiteite word gekenmerk aan die diversifisering van hulle studente en personeel. Hierdie proses vind plaas deur die geleidelike wegbeweeg van die algehele uitsluiting van die minderheidsgroepe op die betrokke kampusse tot hulle volledige insluiting by aIle bedrywighede. Die proses is nie sonder uitdagings vir die betrokke studente nie. In hierdie studie word die ervaringe beskryf van vyf bruin vroulike voorgraadse studente aan die SteIlenbsoch Universiteit (US), 'n oorwegend-blanke tersiere instelling. Vir hierdie studie is 'n feministiese benadering wat gebaseer is op deelnemende aksienavorsing gebruik. Ten spyte van institusionele beleidsinisiatiewe om genoemde transformasie te bespoeding, het die voorgraadse bruin studente wat aan hierdie studie deelgeneem het, nie die universiteitsomgewing as inklusief ervaar nie. Dit het eerder duidelik geword dat die dames baie bewus was van hulle andersheid en hulle minderheidstatus. Faktore soos die klein aantal minderheidstudente en die afwesigheid van simbole of ikone wat die teenwoordigheid van diverse kulture reflekteer en erken, het hulle ervaring as behorende tot 'n minderheidsgroep versterk. Die bevindings van die studie is dat integrasie grootliks oorgelaat word aan persoonlike inisiatiewe. Persoonlikeheidseienskappe soos gedetermineerde optrede, die benutting van strategiee om stres te hanteer en identiteitskrisisse op te los, speel blykbaar 'n sleutelrol in akademiese sukses. Akademiese sukses loop egter nie altyd hand aan hand met sosiale integrasie nie. Daar is bevind dat sosiale isolasie 'n negatiewe impak op persoonlike en akademiese vertroue het. Alhoewel die ervarings van die dames wat aan die studie deelgeneem het relatief negatiewe was ten opsigte van transformasie, was hulle tog gewillig om deel te neem aan die reflektiewe praksis en dialoog. Hierdie feit dien as 'n uitdaging aan die Stellenbosch Universiteit om betrokke te raak by 'n proses waarin die bekommemisse, weerstande en ervaringe van aIle rolspelers hanteer word.

M.Phil. / With this study the better understanding of the skills in, the background with relation to and the attitude towards communicative Afrikaans of .a specific group of Public Administration students of the Technikon Northern-Transvaal is investigated. The focus is principally on the socio-cultural factors that influence the mastering of Afrikaans. The reseach design, including the problem identification, is vested in the theoretical Vygotskyan concept of zone of proximal development. Founded on the theories of both MM Bakhtin and LS Vygotsky, the researcher establishes an own interpretation of the zone of proximal development, when she proposes an integration thereof with the H-model as thought heuristics (Henning 1996). According to this integrated model, the study of students' zone of proximal development in Afrikaans as foreign language encompasses the study of: their language skills; their knowledge of the language; personal and socio-cultural influences; and their metalinguistic skills. This exposition serves as framework for data gathering, data analysis and chapter division. The format of the study is that of case studies which implies that an in-depth investigation is done of various types of data - obtained from a quantitatively small, but sociologically representative group of Public Adminsitration students, The various types of data which are referred to, are: data from talks delivered; written texts; data from listening and reading protocols; and data from interviews. With the interpretation of the data an attempt is not only made to come to an own understanding ("verstehen" - Weber (1958)) of the community of learners' experience and usage of Afrikaans, but also to cultivate a sensitivity for this with the wider teaching and research community.

The impact of leadership practices on services quality in private higher education in South Africa

The purpose of this study was to to investigate the impact of leadership practices on service quality in private higher education in South Africa as a source of competitive advantage. Higher education institutions and, more specifically, private higher education institutions, have faced increasing pressure on many fronts in recent years. These pressures include increased competition, lack of support from key constituencies, an increase in the size and diversity of the student population, dealing with changing technology, increased calls for accountability, a higher demand for quality by all the stakeholders involved, more responsibility for research and teaching and greater emphasis on efficient and effective management. The literature review for this study suggested that leadership impacts positively on quality and, equally important, on service quality. The academic leaders at these institutions have a tremendous influence on the quality of the education provided and the service rendered to the growing number of students. Using a quantitative methodology and a cross-sectional survey research design, this study was conducted on five campuses of a prominent private higher education provider across South Africa using two survey instruments. The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) questionnaire was utilised to conduct the leadership survey while the SERVQUAL instrument was applied in the service quality survey. The campus principals of the five campuses and some of their selected subordinates completed the LPI survey. The SERVQUAL questionnaires were completed by 984 students from the five campuses. Correlation analysis was the major statistical tool used to analyse the data. The findings of the study indicated a strong positive linear correlation between the leadership practices of principals and service quality to students at these institutions. / Business Management / M. Quality culture and its role in service delivery at a university of technology

This study focuses on the employees (academics and non-academics) in the Faculty of Education at a South African university of technology (UoT) who play a key role in providing the services that their customers receive. The study is underpinned by the understanding that in order for the customer’s experience of service provision to be positive, a healthy relationship between the customer and the service provider is critical. The organization, in this case a higher education institution, has to have a sense of quality culture in order for the service provider to maintain a good relationship with a customer. Quality culture assessment can help to better understand complex organizational culture and its impact on service delivery. Quality culture assessment also helps to direct the implementation of organizational changes for better service delivery structures. The type of quality culture dominant in an organization may positively or negatively affect service quality, employee performance and motivation. As a result, the service delivery experience of the customer may be influenced. Quality culture affects the way in which employees interact with each other and with their customers. This study therefore, presents an inquiry into quality culture within a higher education context with the aim to evaluate quality culture within the Faculty of Education at a UoT using quality management principles (QMPs) as a framework. This study employed QMPs because of their increased effectiveness in enhancing customer satisfaction and improving customer loyalty. The quality management principles are: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvements, evidence-based decisions and relationship management (ISO 9001, 2015:Online). This study used a quantitative research approach and was designed as a survey case study. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire that was disseminated to all the academic and non-academic staff in the Faculty of Education at the UoT. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used as a tool for data analysis. Findings in this study reveal that a safe working environment, communication between employees, communication between management and employees, in addition to good working relationships, may affect service quality in the Faculty of Education at the UoT. This implies that having a healthy working environment in an organization is beneficial for employees in order to perform their duties better and to provide quality services to their customers. In an organization with good quality culture, there is close cooperation between employees which leads to good service quality. If the institution under study is concerned with providing value to customers, it needs to consider improving customer value by formally applying QMPs throughout the organization. QMPs are central to the practice of quality management and service delivery. The findings of this study suggest that quality culture affects service quality in the Faculty of Education at the UoT as some of the quality management principles are lacking. This study recommends that the Faculty of Education have a closer look at improving communication between employees, communication between management and employees, in addition to encouraging good working relationships as well as an enabling environment that allows employees to work efficiently. It is also recommended that quality culture be on the Faculty of Education’s agenda in order to enhance the service delivery experience of customers. The Faculty of Education should support a quality culture environment by providing appropriate structures such as service delivery structures within their organizations. These structures may be needed in order to facilitate, maintain and show commitment of staff members towards a quality culture environment and service delivery. Furthermore, these structures may contribute to quality culture by introducing new shared values and behavioural norms that might facilitate the long-term success and well-being of the organization. It is also recommended that the institution under study formally apply quality management principles throughout the organization for the purpose of improving customer value, customer experience and meeting customer needs.

Management of student misconduct at a TVET college in the Western Cape

Thesis (MEd)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges play an important role in providing a competent workforce that can contribute to the economic development of South Africa. TVET Colleges also provide an alternative pathway for students who have not completed grade 12. TVET Colleges have seen many changes during the past decades and have reportedly been underperforming in various areas, including academically. Student misconduct may, amongst other factors, have a determining influence on the poor performance of TVET Colleges. Student misconduct comprises the nature of student misconduct, factors leading to student misconduct and management of student misconduct. The nature of student misconduct, factors leading to student misconduct and methods used to manage student misconduct at TVET Colleges remain largely unidentified and need to be researched. The purpose of this study is to determine the nature of student misconduct, factors leading to student misconduct and how student misconduct is managed at a TVET College in the Western Cape. The nature of student misconduct is classified into ordinary student misconduct and serious misconduct. Factors leading to student misconduct are classified into factors related to the management of TVET Colleges, lecturer qualifications and competence and student background and preparedness. Management of student misconduct is classified into reactive methods and preventative methods for managing student misconduct. The research methodology employed for this study was an explanatory mixed method. The explanatory mixed methodology collects quantitative data first and then, based on the quantitative findings, collects qualitative data to elaborate on the quantitative findings. The major findings of the quantitative phase created topics for further discussion during qualitative interviews. The study found that the most frequent forms of TVET student misconduct are ordinary forms of student misconduct such as absenteeism, playing with cellular phones in class and arriving late for lessons. The most frequent factors leading to student misconduct were found to be students becoming hungry during lessons, students coming from disadvantaged homes and students finding work too difficult. Students' home environment and level of academic preparedness therefore has an impact on their behaviour. Students who originate from disadvantaged homes, experience lack of provision in their basic needs, and also a lack of geborgenheit which lead to student disciplinary problems. As a counter measure, methods applied in the interest of managing student misconduct should include an atmosphere of geborgenheit. The study indicated that the most effective methods for managing student misconduct are the creation of a friendly classroom atmosphere, lecturer’s good subject knowledge, proper lesson preparation and positive student-lecturer relationships. A combination of the above-mentioned methods implies interesting lessons filled with activities that engage students who feel safe, loved and unconditionally accepted in their learning environment. When students feel safe and unconditionally accepted they experience an atmosphere of geborgenheit, a pre-requisite for management of student discipline. Poorly disciplined students, it was found, who display deliberate forms of student misconduct should be disciplined by means of stricter methods such as classroom rules and the disciplinary procedure. Methods applied in the interest of managing student misconduct should, however, be accompanied by an atmosphere of geborgenheit. Disciplinary measures should address misconduct from a position of love and unconditional acceptance. Students with behavioural problems need to be identified and referred to student support services for effective support. It is recommended that an early identification and support system be considered for early identification and referral of students with behavioural problems. Successful implementation of an early identification system should include the involvement health and welfare organisations and religious organisations. Student support services should, in addition, be expanded and posts created for educational psychologists to provide effective counselling to students with behavioural problems. TVET lecturers need to have workplace experience and qualifications, academic qualifications and teaching qualifications to enable them to present interesting, well prepared lessons using a variety of methodologies. It is recommended that TVET Colleges and the DHET invest in upgrading the qualifications of TVET lecturers through bursary schemes, time off at work and salary scales that are linked to qualification levels.

Stereotype activation and university access programmes : preparing students with one hand and holding them back with the other?

A generally untested assumption within the stereotype threat literature is that it is only those individuals who are highly identified with a domain who will be susceptible to stereotype threat. Further, many of the studies on stereotype threat have been confined to artificial laboratory settings and have been conducted on American samples. The current study aimed to develop a measure of domain-identification in order to test this central assumption of stereotype threat theory on a sample of students in a humanities access programme in a South African university. Results indicate that the experience of stereotype threat varies with respect to the combination of 1) the degree of domain-identification, and 2) the degree to which students are aware of negative domain-relevant stereotypes. An evaluation of postgraduate social science students' knowledge of conducting research responsibility in a South African university.

Conducting research responsibly is an essential part of ethical research (Steneck & Bulger, 2007). When research is not conducted responsibly, the result is often research misconduct, which may cause harm to research participants (Aita & Richer, 2005). Although numerous methods and policies have been developed, both to prevent and to deal with research misconduct, such effects are ongoing (Howard Stone, 2001). A study conducted in the United States of America (USA) by Heitman, Olsen and Anestidou (2007) suggested that postgraduate biomedical students did not have sufficient knowledge of conducting research responsibly. This study aimed to adapt Heitman et al.’s (2007) study to social science postgraduate students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. When an inconsistency between attitudes or behaviours (dissonance) occurs, some change must be made in order to eliminate this behaviour. In the case of a discrepancy between attitudes and behaviour, it is most likely that the attitude will change to accommodate the behaviour. The objective of this study is to determine the extent of post purchase behaviour amongst tertiary students, with specific reference to the Durban University of Technology.

Students' perceptions of medico-legal autopsy demonstrations as a learning experience at a South African medical school.

How do medical students experience autopsy demonstrations that form part of the undergraduate curriculum? This was the primary question guiding this phenomenological study within the interpretive paradigm. Both explicit cognitive outcomes and elements of the “hidden curriculum” associated with autopsies were evaluated. Most previous studies on this topic employed survey questionnaires and were conducted prior to the radical curriculum reformations in medical undergraduate training. Some of these pedagogical changes have threatened the use of autopsies for teaching. More recently some other studies concentrated on aspects that were not directly related to educational outcomes. Burton (2003) conducted a phenomenological study interviewing medical educators about the uses of autopsy in the modern undergraduate curriculum, essentially detailing the “delivered curriculum”. Therefore this study focused on the “received curriculum”. Interviews were conducted with 10 medical students in their 4th year of study, having attended medico-legal autopsy demonstrations forming a central part of a course in Forensic Medicine. The underlying assumption of the study is that ‘student voices’ need to be heard in determining what is taught and how (Brooker & MacDonald, 1999), something typically determined by academic staff. This need is especially highlighted in a climate of “self-directed learning” promoted by modern medical curricula. The data are analysed qualitatively using a theoretical framework of three dimensions of learning (Illeris, 2004): (1) cognitive content dimension, (2) emotional psychodynamic, attitudinal and motivational dimension, (3) social-societal dimension. Findings of the study show that medical students perceive autopsy demonstrations to be of considerable benefit to their learning; both cognitive and affective outcomes are discussed detailing individual contextual factors that influenced the outcomes.
