A phenomenological investigation of challenges and coping mechanisms associated with the transition from high school to university

Molapisi, Adelaide Tsholofelo January 2009 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2009. / While entering the university is often a wonderful experience to a number of students, to some students it is very a challenging exposure to a degree where they even end up discontinuing their studies. This study was concerned with the challenges and coping mechanisms that students used as they were confronted by the university environment. The purposive sample of ten students was selected from the University of Zululand student population and they volunteered participation in the study. The research findings of this study indicated that many students found entering the university very challenging, as the environment there was experienced as impersonal, demanding, competitive and directionless. The aim of the research study was to investigate students' experiences in association with the transition from high school to university and to identify mechanisms that they used to handle the transition in question.

Les étudiants Gallois à l'université d'Oxford, 1282-1485 / The Welsh students at Oxford university, 1282-1485

Delin, Alexandre 06 April 2013 (has links)
In the Later Middle Ages, an increasing number of Welshmen made their way to Oxford University. From the Conquest of the Principality of Wales by Edward I in 1282, to the arrival of the Tudors on the throne of England in 1485, 304 Welsh students can be identified. After explaining the prosopographical method used in this work, this study analyses their social and geographical origins. If only few pieces of information can be collected about their social backgrounds, it is possible to find out a little bit more about the parts of Wales these individuals came from. The diocese of Saint David's was their main place of origin. This examination also highlights the qualifications gained. They studied mainly law, particularly civil law. However, canon law was not neglected. The study then focuses on the types of employment that they found in the service of the Church, or of the King of England. In many respects, their careers are similar to those of many English clerks. While 16.4 % of the Welsh graduates worked in Church administration, 6.5 % of them appear in various positions in the King's administration. The most talented scholars, and those who managed to secure strong patronages, even played a relatively important role in the affairs of state. Finally, this Ph.D. thesis depicts the University life of a visible minority in Oxford. The presence of Welshmen in the University of Oxford undoubtedly reflects the integration of the Principality of Wales within the "regnum Anglorum".

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jose de Oliveira Silva.pdf: 20798336 bytes, checksum: 5eb315924a7e0c7f501825d95c309c79 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-12-19 / Universidade Católica de Santos - Católica de Santos / The number of students entering higher education bringing accumulated learning gaps from previous stages of schooling has disquieted professors and administrators at higher education institutions, who pursue alternatives to solve or minimize these issues by implementing actions in this regard. To this end, since 1999 the Catholic University of Santos has been undertaking an annual project titled "leveling course," which first got underway with engineering students. In 2003, the University extended this initiative to all undergraduate courses, creating the Initiation to Academic Life Program (IALP) to provide educational support and guidelines to freshmen to assist them in remaining in higher education successfully. The purpose of this research project is to examine how students perceive their experience in the IALP. The proposed analysis is based on a study on higher education today, especially in Brazil, highlighting the increase in access and the hegemony in the private sector. To achieve its goal, the project adopts a qualitative approach (case study) and uses official internal and external documents and a structured questionnaire with open and closed questions, which was applied to 36 students who entered the University in January 2012. The principles of content analysis were used to analyze the responses to the open questions. The data were grouped into categories emerging from remarks made by the students and showed that they understand and value the content and activities developed in the IALP and consider them a key to begin the course they chose and to do well in it. They believe the IALP is critical not only insofar as overcoming difficulties arising from elementary and/or middle education is concerned, but also in for integrating into University life.

Životní situace vysokoškolských studentů z hlediska dospělosti / Life situation of university students in terms of adulthood

Musilová, Barbora January 2012 (has links)
Diplomová práce: Životní situace vysokoškolských studentů z hlediska dospělosti (Life situation of university students in terms of adulthood) Zpracovala: Barbora Musilová Abstract Diploma thesis " Life situation of university students in terms of adulthood" aims to show how young people currently studying university perceive their life situation and how much they feel to be adults. The thesis seeks the answers in qualitative analysis of students of Prague universities. Theoretical background of empirical part is formed by theories of present time analysts which highlight the variability and instability of social conditions. The result of this instability is that there are shifts of the timing of life events in the life cycles and challenging the traditional definition of adulthood as defined for example, independent living and marriage. Trends in the life of young students, such as prolonged studies or leaving home parents in late time point to a new stage, which haven't been in the life paths of previous generations. Living situation of young university students is not only extending the transition to adulthood, but the independent stage, which also raises the need to redefine the earlier definition of valid adulthood.
