Face à la diversité des pratiques des architectes-urbanistes, comment l'émergence du fait numérique dans la société contemporaine influence-t-elle leur champ d’intervention ? S’appuyant sur une enquête ethnographique, le terrain de cette thèse interroge le rôle des techniques et technologies numériques dans le processus de projet comme pratique d’anticipation de la ville à venir. Agence d’architecture, start-up technologique, laboratoire indépendant et collectif associatif s’entremêlent au sein d’une seule et même équipe de concepteurs. En respect de leurs cadres d’actions, la description analytique suit le schéma linéaire du développement d’innovations : des recherches théoriques en chambre, à une phase de R&D collaborative rendue opérationnelle par des préfigurations et des prototypes pour finir sur la rencontre d'une application numérique dite d’ « open innovation » avec un contexte de transformation de la ville. On y voit comment les concepteurs donnent du sens à leur pratique et questionnent leur statut et leur légitimité. Ils transitent de l’idée d'un indice universel d'évaluation de la qualité de vie en ville à la promotion de l'urbanisme collaboratif via un dispositif de médiation socio-technique. Braconnant dans différents univers, des technologies intellectuelles sont mobilisées et les statuts attribués aux nombres, données, informations, modèles et images évoluent. D’un discours à consonance scientifique fondé sur un idéal d’objectivité à la manipulation de métaphores, le glissement d’un point de vue virtuel sur la ville à un point de vue re-localisé accompagne un renversement conceptuel allant de données construites pour projeter la ville au visible urbain comme données à révéler. Du registre de la prédiction à celui de l’innovation, la place de la technologie, son rapport au temps et à l’espace, rencontrent et se confrontent aux acteurs de la transformation de la ville, révélant la délicate articulation d’un futur simulé et stimulé à un futur partagé et concret. / As contemporary architects and urbanists embrasse a large variety of practices, how does the rise of digital technologies in the civilian society affects their field ? Based on an ethnographic inquiry, this research questions the role of technics and technologies within the conception process of the city of tomorrow. Office of architecture and urbanism, digital start-up, independent research laboratory and a non-profit organisation frame the actions of a small team of designers. Following their paths, an analytical description reveals the impact of the linear innovation process scheme. Starting with theoretical works the interlocutors move to a collaborative R&D intended to be operational through visualizations tests and prototype and then to the realization of an innovative product : a digital application based on the principles of « open innovation » and designed to be used in the city making process. The analysis shows how the designers make sense of what they do on a daily basis and across the years, how they recurrently question their practice to legitimate their work. Going from the idea of producing a universal index score of the urban quality of life later, they actively promote what they call « collaborative urbanism » which is to be fulfilled using the tool they designed. The text shows how designers poach on various fields of knowledge and use « intellectual technologies » to manipulate numbers, datas, informations, models and pictures. The status and roles given to theses non-human things variate to follow the developments of their practice as a whole. From being scientific and objective to the use of metaphors, the interlocutors go from a virtual view of the city to a re-localized point of view. Keeping their favorite domain of scrutiny, they operate a conceptual U-turn: from datas to project on the model of a city to a city made of datas awaiting to be unveiled, thus going from prediction to innovation. Observed in context, the role of technology, its way of dealing with time and space, meet the various actors of city making processes, unveiling the fragile assemblage to be made between a simulated and stimulated future to a shared and concrete one.

Cette thèse se positionne dans la lignée d'une série de travaux menés depuis une vingtaine d'années en France sur l’évolution des métiers et des professions de la production urbaine, architecturale et paysagère, au prisme de l'émergence de nouvelles attentes sociétales. Elle analyse plus précisément les attitudes et les modalités d'interventions des concepteurs, dans des projets urbains marqués depuis le milieu des années 2000 par de fortes ambitions en matière de participation citoyenne associées à des enjeux de développement durable. Dans quelle mesure l'émergence de telles commandes en France, particulièrement perceptible dans les premières opérations d'écoquartiers, modifient-elles les représentations des concepteurs vis-à-vis de la participation citoyenne, leurs modes d'exercice, leurs compétences, voire leur manière de considérer leur métier ? / This thesis is written within the context of a series of works undertaken over the last twenty years in France on the subject of the trades and professions of urban, architectural and landscape production, as considered through the prism of new social expectations. The thesis analyses the attitudes and forms of intervention adopted by designers of urban projects that,since the mid 2000s, have featured strong citizen participation ambitions associated with sustainable development issues. To what extent has the emergence of these demands in France, particularly noticeable in the case of the first sustainable neighborhoods, modified designers’ representation of citizen participation, as well as their own practice, skills andgeneral vision of their profession?
