This cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate the seroprevalence of Hepatitis B and C among a group of dentistry undergraduate students and dentists from Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Each group contained 90 participants were selected. Blood samples were collected after answering a questionnaire and providing a written consent. Most of the dentists (73, 81.1%) and students (64, 71.1%) were female. The mean age was 32.8 years (± 8.3) for dentists and 21.8 (± 2.4) for the students. The majority of dentists were engaged in some form of private practice (38, 42.2%) and had graduated more than 10 years previously (30, 33.3%). Antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) were detected in 81 (91.0%) dentists and 80 (88.9%) students. Two (2.2%) students were positive for antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) but they were also anti-HBs-positive, indicating immunization after infection. Four (4.5%) dentists and four (4.5%) students were positive for anti-HCV antibodies. This high HCV prevalence should be taken as a warning to raise awareness, promote partnerships, and mobilize resources, as well as to encourage regular monitoring for early diagnosis of chronic liver disease in dental care workers and students.
