The Relation between the Self-concept and Values of Parents with Their Children

Mackenzie, Donna Lee 01 1900 (has links)
In accordance with theories of Carmichael (19), Lecky (41), and Rogers (55), which suggest that adolescence is a time of redefining conceptions about one's self in relation to values, groups, and institutions in one's environment, the following hypotheses were proposed to be investigated in this study: 1. The difference between mothers' and fathers' self-concept scores is nonsignificant. 2. Parents have higher self-concepts than their children. 3. Parents of children with high self-concepts will differ significantly from parents of children with low self-concepts with respect to their values.

Nature immersion and goals: perspective of the dual-valuing process model

Logan, Shelby 07 January 2020 (has links)
Being in nature has been associated with many positive outcomes, including well-being and, more recently, with sophisticated outcomes such as goal orientation. We proposed that the dialectic between the organismic valuing process (OVP) and sociocognitive valuing process (SVP) accounts for why immersion in natural environments may lead to a preference for pursuing intrinsic goals (e.g., affiliation, personal growth) over extrinsic goals (e.g., popularity, financial success). We randomly assigned participants (N = 75) to go on a series of up to five walks in four different kinds of environments, representing a continuum of natural environments. We hypothesized that participants who were immersed in more natural environments would report a higher relative intrinsic goal orientation than participants in less natural environments, and that this effect would be mediated by both activation of the OVP and non-activation of the SVP. We found no significant main effect of nature immersion on relative intrinsic goal valuing (b = 0.10, p = 0.34), but we did find a significant positive effect of nature immersion on activation of the OVP (b = 0.37, p < 0.01) and a significant negative effect of wild nature immersion on activation of SVP (b = -0.28, p < 0.01). However, post-hoc tests revealed that participants in the most natural environment (i.e., the Forest condition) were the most likely to experience effects of both OVP activation and SVP non-activation. Interpretations of these results are discussed, and limitations of the study are addressed. / Graduate / 2020-11-18

Exploring Sustainability VALS: Sustainability Value, Lifestyle Practices and Stewardship

Lee, Stacy Hyun-Nam 12 1900 (has links)
Living sustainability is a set of behaviors for the long-term functioning of society. Sustainability VALS provides the clothing and textiles industry distinctive insight into comprehending the phenomenon through the application of the appropriate theoretical platform. The objectives are to identify the dimensionality of sustainability value, sustainability practices and sustainability stewardship in consumers’ perceptive, and to examine the impacts of sustainability value and stewardship on sustainability practices. Analyzing data (n = 239) from a southwestern university reveals the critical dimensions of sustainability lifestyle practices, sustainability value and sustainability stewardship. 62 out of 64 hypotheses were confirmed the significant impacts of sustainability values and stewardship on sustainability lifestyle practices. The findings revealed that the altruistic, openness to change, anthropocentrism, and ecocentrism values are influential sustainability values affecting on sustainability lifestyle practices. Given the theoretical perspective of sustainability VALS, sustainability stewardships can facilitate the holistic idea to incur consumer’s sustainability lifestyle practices.

The Contribution of Outdoor Recreation on Rural Property Sales in Mississippi

Brashier, Jerry 13 December 2014 (has links)
To estimate the contribution of outdoor recreation on rural property sales in Mississippi, information was collected from lenders and appraisers associated with the Federal Land Bank, Mossy Oak Properties, and Rutledge Investment Company on properties sold from 2003-2008 in three regions of Mississippi: Mississippi Delta/Hills Region, North Mississippi Region and South Mississippi Region. Property sales information was collected on 102,747 hectares (ha) of rural properties valued at $475.1 million. Hedonic regression analysis was used to quantify the contribution of outdoor recreation on Total Sale Value (TSV). Outdoor recreation contributed $160.6 million of the TSV. Forests comprised 71% of land coverage statewide. Attributes that were related to TSV statewide were row crop lands, bottomland hardwood forests, mixed pine-hardwood forests, planted pine forests, pasture/fallow fields, natural pine forests, upland hardwood forests, cutover woodland forests, and overnight sleeping quarters. Attributes related to TSV varied across the three regions. Statewide, hunting was expected to be conducted on at least 96% of the properties sold. In the Mississippi Delta/Hills Region, outdoor recreation contributed the greatest percent increase in land value (55.4%) and properties leased for a greater value ($58.70 per ha). Information provided by this study will encourage rural property owners to justify enhancements of wildlife habitats, provide recreational opportunities, and enhance their income. Rural land appraisers will use the information to appraise lands more accurately, and resource and regulatory agencies will use it to protect wetlands and other sensitive lands or mitigate for adverse impacts.

The Study of Assessed Farm Values in Grey County

MacDonald, Patricia Dianne 04 1900 (has links)
<p> The problem studied in this thesis is variations in assessed farm values in a selected area of Grey County, Ontario. A random sample of eighty farms was taken from four townships located in the vicinity of the city of Owen Sound.</p> <p> Data was collected on distance to the city, farm size, quality of buildings, soil, land use and type of road. Hypotheses were developed and tested with the use of multiple regression. The analysis provided empirical proof of the validity of the a priori hypotheses. The directional impact of the variables can be predicted.</p> <p> Two of the variables, quality of buildings and size of farm were found to be statistically significant. The low level of explanation of the variation in farm values is related to the size of the sample and to the relative uniformity of conditions in the area being investigated.</p> <p> The use of actual sale values, a larger sample and a more diverse area near a city that is an important market centre is recommended as a basis for further research.</p> / Thesis / Candidate in Philosophy
