From a historical review of intervening factors in this outcome, we surveyed data in newspapers, magazines and especially in interviews that were conducted with former employees of the company in search of more precise information to explain the reasons for this break. The theoretical background is based on issues of Business History, Oral History and History of Present. CHANDLER (1973) holds that the main challenge to historians of business is to analyze the institutional situation in which the decisions were taken and the process of change that occurs over time. From this, we briefly describe the 79 years of history of the company. Varig started in 1927, from the entrepreneur Otto Meyer, and its flights would reach the most diverse destinations worldwide. Varig was, unanimously, a brand of Brazilian capacity and therefore, its sad ending in July 2006 caused an impact not only on its employees but on much of the national society. LE GOFF (1999) tells us that the historian, to write Immediate History, cannot be satisfied only by describing and telling. Yet, he should strive to explain facts, and it was based on this idea that we seek to investigate the main factors, both nationally and internationally, that contributed to the company's collapse. We reviewed political, economic and social factors, always looking for inputs that could contribute to the explanation of the facts.THOMPSON (1992) maintains the importance of Oral History and based on that, we propose interviews with former employees of the company as a methodology for our research. Statements given by five former employees of Varig that occupied different positions in the company over many years are rich material for analysis that go beyond the purposes of this research. We conclude that we can attribute the bankruptcy of Varig primarily to the following reasons: the model of management in the company and the political-economical factors that specifically interfere with aviation, such as wars, climate, market deregulation, among others. / Este trabalho disserta sobre as questões que permearam a aviação nacional no período de 1986 a 2006 e levaram à quebra da Varig. A partir de uma revisão histórica sobre fatores intervenientes nesse desfecho, pesquisamos dados em jornais, revistas e, principalmente, em entrevistas feitas com ex-funcionários da empresa, a fim de obter informações mais precisas que explicassem as razões da sua quebra. O aporte teórico do trabalho é baseado em questões como história de empresas, história oral e história do presente. CHANDLER (1973) nos coloca que o principal desafio dos historiadores de empresas é analisar a conjuntura institucional em que se tomaram as decisões, bem como o processo de mudança que se dá ao longo do tempo. A partir disso, descrevemos brevemente os 79 anos de história da empresa. A Varig teve início em 1927, a partir do empreendedor Otto Meyer, e seus voos alcançariam os mais variados destinos no mundo. A Varig foi, unanimemente, uma marca da capacidade brasileira e, por isso, o seu triste desfecho em julho de 2006 causou impacto não somente aos seus funcionários, mas a grande parte da sociedade nacional. LE GOFF (1999) nos diz que o historiador, para escrever história imediata, não pode contentar-se em descrever e contar: deve esforçar-se para explicar. Fundamentados nessa ideia, procuramos pesquisar os principais fatores, em âmbito nacional e internacional, que contribuíram para a quebra da empresa. Revisamos fatores de ordem política, econômica e social, sempre buscando insumos que pudessem auxiliar para a explicação dos fatos.THOMPSON (1992) defende a importância da história oral e, baseados nisso, propusemos entrevistas com ex-funcionários da empresa como metodologia para a pesquisa. Os depoimentos dados por cinco ex-funcionários da Varig, os quais ocuparam diferentes cargos na empresa ao longo de muitos anos, constituem material riquíssimo para análise, o que vai além dos fins desta pesquisa. Concluímos que, dentre as causas principais, podemos atribuir a quebra da Varig, primordialmente, aos seguintes motivos: ao modelo de gestão da empresa, à conjuntura político-econômica e aos fatores que especificamente interferem na aviação, tais como guerras, clima, abertura do mercado, dentre outros.

In accordance with the economic, social and cultural development that shows competitiveness as its core, this study aimed to answer the following question: How were the social, cultural and economic impacts dealt when Varig Corporation was wound up following the consequent departure from the company of the Brazilian airline industry? Beginning with a general inquiry, written sources were analyzed as well as all relevant documents which may provide new elements for a better comprehension of the facts of nearly eight decades of Varig Corporation history. In oral recordings, we could register and analyze the testimonies, aiming to leave to posterity the names of men and women that participated in its long history, mainly pilots and co-pilots who had to search for new opportunities in different markets, and the retired ones, who depended on Aerus, and lost their dreams of a peaceful aging as Varig stopped operating. / Esta pesquisa, que trata da “Varig: reflexões sobre a ascensão e a queda da empresa símbolo do transporte aéreo nacional”, pretende discutir as transformações sofridas pela empresa ao longo dos anos, seja do ponto de vista legal, através das alterações específicas do setor aéreo, seja na forma pela qual os diversos gestores a conduziram, diante dos novos rumos da economia mundial no período de 1986 a 2006, assim como os efeitos produzidos na expressiva parcela de aeronautas do seu quadro funcional. No contexto do desenvolvimento econômico, social e cultural que traz no seu bojo a competitividade, como pressuposto básico, delineia-se a seguinte questão: Como se processaram os impactos sociais, culturais e econômicos, decorrentes da saída da Varig do cenário da aviação comercial brasileira? A partir de um questionamento geral, buscamos nas fontes escritas, de toda natureza, os registros pertinentes ao assunto que possam fornecer elementos para uma melhor compreensão dos acontecimentos das quase oito décadas de existência da Viação Aérea Riograndense. Nos relatos orais, além de registrar e analisar os depoimentos, o fundamento norteador da escolha desta fonte foi a possibilidade de deixar nominados para a história da empresa, os homens e mulheres que participaram de sua longa trajetória, principalmente, os pilotos e co-pilotos que foram buscar em outros mercados novos postos de trabalho e, ainda os aposentados e dependentes do Aerus que viram ruir o sonho de uma velhice tranqüila, quando a Varig parou de voar.
