El objetivo de esta tesis es investigar cómo los alumnos de primero y quinto año de las Escuelas de Enseñanza Media de Viedma construyen las representaciones mentales del lugar donde viven, en este caso el Valle Inferior del Río Negro, construcción que se basa, por un lado, en los conocimientos adquiridos en Geografía como así también en otras disciplinas que se imparten en la escuela, y por otro en el conocimiento popular que surge a partir de las interrelaciones sociales. En el contexto se incluyen dos juridicciones, la de Viedma en el departamento Adolfo Alsina en la Provincia de Río Negro y la de Carmen de Patagones en el partido de Patagones en la Provincia de Buenos Aires. Para ello, se trabajó con el concep-to de habitus planteado por Pierre Bourdieu, como forma de ver, percibir, sentir y actuar, esto permitió abordar el conoci-miento que los alumnos tienen del medio local, tanto urbano como rural, teniendo en cuenta también la posición que cada uno de los alumnos tiene en el sector socio espacial al que pertenece. Esta investigación considera la significación de los elementos naturales y artificiales en el espacio, ya que estos tienen un determinado capital simbólico tanto en sus lugares de vida cotidiana como en aquellos a los que concurren por determinados motivos, en la ciudad de Viedma y Carmen de Patagones, los barrios de la ciudad de Viedma, la llanura bajo riego y la costa del mar, esto permitió ir reconstruyendo los procesos de apropiación de conocimientos a partir de la valoración que ellos hacen del lugar. / The aim of this thesis is to research on the way students in 1st and 5th year of Viedma High Schools construct mental representations of the place where they live, in this case, the Lower Valley of Río Negro. On the one hand, this construc-tion is based on the knowledge acquired from Geography as well as from other subjects that are taught at school, and on the other hand, on the popular knowledge that arises from social interrelationships. In this context, two jurisdictions are included: Viedma in the district of Adolfo Alsina, Río Negro Province, and Carmen de Patagones in the district of Patago-nes, Buenos Aires Province. For this purpose, the concept of habitus expressed by Pierre Bourdieu is used as a way to see, perceive, feel and act, making it possible to deal with the knowledge that students have of the local geography, both urban and rural areas, taking also into account the socio-spatial group that each of the students belongs to. This research considers the importance of natural and artificial elements in thespace since they have a certain symbolical capital, both in the places that form part of their daily lives and in those they go to for certain reasons in the city of Viedma and Carmen de Patagones, the neighbourhoods of Viedma, the irrigated land and the coast of the sea. This made it possible to reconstruct the processes for the appropriation of knowledge, taking as a starting point the way the students value the place.
