Diferentes áreas do conhecimento científico tratam do estudo das formas com abordagens que tanto possuem especificidades quanto complementaridades. Na Geografia, há estudos que abordam esse tema a partir de análises pautadas na representação dos elementos constituintes da morfologia, como o plano e a sua evolução; as relações do plano com o sítio urbano; a fisionomia urbana; a densidade da ocupação, a identificação de áreas morfologicamente homogêneas; a heterogeneidade das formas. Há, também, estudos que tomam a análise das formas urbanas como uma investigação que remete ao estudo da paisagem, com foco nos conteúdos culturais, sociais e políticos que irão se manifestar em formas espaciais, tanto quanto nas representações a partir delas construídas, baseadas em perspectivas históricas, econômicas, sociais ou culturais. Isso se deve à influência das diferentes correntes teórico-metodológicas que, direta ou indiretamente, contribuíram (ou contribuem) nas abordagens referentes à morfologia urbana. Considerando-se que o estudo das formas urbanas é relevante para se compreender a dinâmica das transformações espaciais, neste trabalho realizamos uma discussão sobre diferentes abordagens teóricas que contemplam aspectos ligados à produção do espaço urbano e estruturação da cidade. Different areas of scientific knowledge have dealt with the study of urban forms, from perspectives that show specificity as complementarities. In geography, there are studies that address this theme from analyzes based on the representation of the constituent elements of morphology, such as the plan and its evolution; the the relationships of the plan with the urban site, the urban physiognomy, the density of occupation, the identification of morphologically homogeneous areas, the heterogeneity of the forms. There are also studies that take the morphology analysis as a research that refers to the study of landscape, with a focus on contents as cultural, social and political. that will manifest in spatial forms and representations constructed from them, based on perspectives as historic, economic, social or cultural. This is due to the influence of different theoretical and methodological currents that directly or indirectly contributed (or contribute) to urban morphology approaches. Considering that the study of urban forms is relevant to understanding the dynamics of spatial transformations, this thesis conducted a discussion of different theoretical approaches, aspects linked to the production of urban space and structure of the city. Although the urban morphology term to be associated with analysis of form and what can be catch from the empirical, we must consider that their meaning is not limited to this dimension, because the form is the configuration of a process.
