A questionnaire related to environmental awareness was administered to 244 students enrolled in NR 101, Introduction to Natural Resources, during the Spring Quarter of 1979 in an attempt to answer the following questions: (1) To what extent will viewing a slide-tape presentation alter student responses on a questionnaire? (2) To what extent will the responses of the students viewing a slide-tape presentation differ from a control treatments result in significant differences in responses when compared to a control group?Results of this research indicate the treatments did alter the students' responses on one factor. with the hand and digital illustration knowledge and skills that they acquired during their time
of study. As a result of the ever-changing developments in technology, the parameters of
hand-generated illustration within the visual communications industry have increasingly
progressed toward digitally generated artwork. This thesis investigates the alignment or nonalignment
between illustration teaching and learning practices in higher education and
professional practice in the visual communications industry, with a view to identifying the
gaps, and their causes, in the knowledge and skills of graduates entering the workplace.
The study uses the lens of Activity Theory (Enqestrorn, 1987) to investigate practices in
higher education and industry sites. Both the higher education and workplace investigation
was guided by the research questions: 1) What comprises an activity system in the training
of illustrators in higher education? 2) What comprises an activity system in professional
illustrators' practice? and 3) How can the higher education and professional activity systems
be aligned for their mutual benefit? The comparative study uses both quantitative questionnaire data and qualitative data derived
from interviews conducted in both higher education and workplace sites, including the
analysis of samples of illustration at both sites. The research reveals areas where there is
both alignment and non-alignment and recommendations are made with a view to ensuring
that illustration programmes in higher education are aligned as closely as possible to the
needs of the workplace.
The contribution made by this research is both theoretical and practical. The theoretical
knowledge framework that has been developed outlines academics' and practitioners' of
illustration theorising of current trends in both hand and digital illustration curricula in higher
education and current trends and needs of digital and hand illustration in the visual
communication industry. In broad terms, there is alignment with regard to technical skills and
the tools used across both sites, while there is non-alignment with regard to knowledge of
and preparation for the workplace and self employment, for example, time management,
interpersonal skills and the acceptance of critique. The practical contribution is in the form of
recommendations to curricula, which when applied should better prepare graduates with the
practical and skills required of illustrators in the unpredictable, demanding world of work,
which they encounter on leaving their academic institutions.

The effect of on-screen instructor gender and expressivity upon adult learning of basic computer skills from an instructional videotapeMeyrow, Arnold Burt 14 October 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of on-screen video instructor gender and expressivity upon the competency based performance of adults in the learning of basic computer skills from a series of locally produced instructional videotapes. These tapes were typical of the type of instructional videos used by corporations, government, and schools to train adults.
A 2 x 3 factorial design was used to analyze the variables effects on learning. The independent variables were instructor gender and instructor expressivity. Mediating variables were student gender, ethnicity (as measured by first language), reading level, and attitude towards computers. The dependent variable was student learning as measured by a 20 question multiple choice exam. The subjects (n=120) used in the study were under employed or unemployed adults. Sixty-nine percent were considered to be limited speakers of English.
Six videotapes were produced. These tapes were identical in every way except that in three tapes a male actor taught in respectively low, average, and high expressive manners. In each of the other three tapes a female acted in a low, average and high expressive manners. Each subject viewed one of the tapes, in groups of eight to ten students, and was immediately tested on the material presented in their tape. Students were also asked to rate the instructor they saw on a five item scale of expressivity.
The findings showed no significant main effects for either on-screen instructor gender or expressivity. A significant interaction was found between on-screen instructor gender and expressivity, as measured by the students. Students viewing the low expressive male and the high expressive female scored higher on the exam than students viewing either the high expressive male or the low expressive female.
Performance on the test was correlated with student reading level, computer experience, the time it took to take the exam, and student ethnicity (as measured by first language spoken). Additionally, a significant interaction was found between student gender and instructor gender. Students viewing instructors of the opposite gender scored higher than those viewing instructors of the same gender.
The implications of this study suggest that subject matter and student population be considered in both the design of instructional television programs and in the casting and the directing of talent for these programs. / Ed. D.
