Learning German Vocabulary: An Investigation into Learners' Use of Vocabulary Learning Strategies

This research is an empirical multiple-case study that is designed to explore adult individual learners’ vocabulary learning processes, and to examine their use of vocabulary learning strategies. It investigates the following key questions: (1) What vocabulary learning strategies do the individual learners usually use to find the meaning of unknown words? (2) What vocabulary learning strategies do the individual learners usually use to consolidate the words? (3) How do the individual learners apply the vocabulary learning strategies for the purposes mentioned above? (4) What are the differences between the learners’ use of vocabulary learning strategies? By using multiple data collection methods – questionnaires, interviews, and think-aloud protocols – I not only investigate what strategies the individual research participants use to study vocabulary, but also look at how they actually employ the strategies while completing a series of vocabulary activities. Finally, I also compare the patterns in the use of strategies between the participants. After the introduction, Chapter Two begins with the clarification of basic terms: “word,” “word knowledge,” and “strategy.” In Chapter Three, studies in the fields of vocabulary learning strategies are reviewed. Chapter Four deals with mental processes involved in vocabulary learning. Chapter Five focuses on the empirical study. I describe briefly the German language course (GER 101) and the language textbook, Vorsprung (2nd edition, 2002), and illustrate in depth the methodology used for data collection and data analysis. The results of the study are presented in Chapter Six. Chapter Seven summarizes the study results, followed by suggestions for foreign vocabulary instruction and for future research. The study illustrates that participants used a variety of vocabulary learning strategies to learn vocabulary. In total, 49 individual vocabulary learning strategies are identified and classified. Further, the differences between the learners are shown to be not only in what strategies they use but also in how they employ them. Finally, the study shows that well-organized and planned learning strategy training should be provided to language learners in order to make sure that they can use the strategies effectively, and that language instructors and the language textbook should play an active role in strategy training.

台灣國中學生英語字彙學習策略偏好個案研究 / A case study on english learner’s preferences lies in vocabulary learning strategies used by some junior high school students in Taiwan

本研究基於字彙學習以及字彙學習策略的重要性,探討台灣國中學生使用字彙學習策略的情形。且加入其在字彙學習程度高低的因素,來探討台灣國中學生使用策略之情形。本研究問題有二:第一,台灣國中學生最常使用的字彙學習策略有哪些?最不常使用的字彙學習策略有哪些?第二,台灣國中學生字彙學習程度與字彙學習策略之間是否有關聯性?如果有,其關聯性又為何?本研究依據Oxford(1990)的語言學習策略分類標準,測驗某台北市立國中二年級的學生使用字彙學習策略的情形,同時也比較字彙學習程度不同的學生使用這些策略的頻率高低。結果顯示如下:(1)台灣國中學生最常使用的字彙學習策略為認知策略,最少使用的字彙學習策略為情意策略。(2)程度高的學生使用字彙學習策略的頻率高於程度低的學生。此研究結果可為英語教師和學習者在字彙教與學方面提供一些參考,讓英語字彙的教學變得更加有效率。 / The study investigates the usage of English vocabulary learning strategies by some junior high school students in Taiwan. The factor of the levels of the students is included. There are two research questions: (1) what are the most commonly used English vocabulary learning strategies among junior high school students in Taiwan? (2) whether the levels of the students are related to the types of vocabulary learning strategies they use? If the answer is “yes”, what relationship it is? The study is based on the language learning strategies in Oxford(1990). The subjects are some second graders in a junior high school in Taipei. In the study, the researcher compares the usage of English vocabulary learning strategies among students at different vocabulary levels. The result shows that the most commonly used vocabulary strategy among the students is cognitive strategy, and the least commonly used one is affective strategy. Furthermore, the result also shows that higher level students use vocabulary learning strategies more often than lower level students. The researcher hopes that this study could give the English learners some suggestions to make vocabulary learning more effective.

高職英文教師對於字彙學習策略融入教學的信念與實踐 / Vocational High School English Teachers' Beliefs and Practices in Integrating Vocabulary Learning Strategies into Their Instruction

回溯過去的研究,教師信念對於其教學行為影響非常深遠,但是對於字彙學習策略融入教學這個議題,相關的研究仍然不多。本研究旨在探討高職英文教師對於字彙學習策略融入教學的信念還有實際的教學情形。文獻探討涵蓋字彙教學的發展、字彙學習策略的理論以及教師信念與實踐。 本研究所蒐集到的有效問卷為二百零一份,研究的對象為台灣的高職英文教師。研究方式採用量化的教師問卷佐以質性的教師訪談。共有八位教師參與本研究的訪談。訪談的內容經過整理分析,用來解釋或補充問卷統計的結果。分析問卷時,採用的統計方法有描述性統計、相關係數、單因子變異數分析。本研究的主題如下:(一) 教師信念及教學情形:分別以認知策略、社會策略、後設認知以及學習媒介等策略來探討、(二)教師信念與其實踐情形是否符合,與造成兩者之間不相符的可能原因以及(三)探討影響教師信念與實踐的各種因素。 本研究的主要發現是: 1. 教師對於字彙學習策略融入教學抱持相當正面的態度,而實踐程度是中低等以上。 2. 由於統計顯示教師信念和實踐是正相關,教師實踐和他們的信念大致符合,不過教師所面臨的一些問題如教學時數限制、學生動機、教科書的設計、資源不足等會使他們無法完全遵照其信念於教學。 3. 一些因素如教學年資、教師學歷、學生程度、英語教學時間長短、教師是否參加字彙相關研習,以及是否接觸學習策略相關的研究報告等確實會影響教師的教學信念與實踐。 本研究有助於了解高職英文教師對於字彙學習策略融入教學的信念以及他們實踐的情形,希望能夠提升老師對於策略教學的覺知。研究者對於英文教師、師資培育機構、教育部還有教師書出版社提出建議改善之道,期望能進一步提升高職的英語教學。 / Although research has shown that teacher beliefs play a decisive role in teachers’ instructional judgments and decisions, their beliefs and practices in integrating vocabulary learning strategies have not gained enough attention in the recent English educational forum. This study aimed to explore what attitudes vocational high school English teachers held toward the instruction of vocabulary learning strategies and their practices of the beliefs. Literature review ranged from vocabulary instruction, vocabulary learning strategies to teachers’ beliefs and practices. The participants of this study were vocational high school teachers in Taiwan. The data collection instruments were questionnaire and interview. The former provided mainly quantitative data and the latter qualitative data. A total of 201 valid questionnaires were analyzed and computed by means of descriptive statistics, correlation, t-test and one-way ANOVA. Eight teachers were contacted for the follow-up interviews. Their interview results were utilized to further support and explain the questionnaire data. There were three issues investigated in this study. The first one was teachers’ beliefs and practices in integrating vocabulary learning strategies into their instruction. Teachers’ beliefs and practices of cognitive strategies, social strategies, multiple sources, and metacognitive strategies were discussed. The second was the consistency and inconsistency between teachers’ beliefs and their practices and the possible problems that might cause the inconsistency. The third one was influential factors that affected teachers’ beliefs and practices. Based on the results of the study, major findings were summarized. First, teachers approved highly of the integration of vocabulary learning strategies and the frequency of their practices ranged from low to high. Second, based on the significant correlation of teachers’ beliefs and practices, the relationship was generally consistent. However, teachers were not able to teach what they believed completely. Some of the strategies revealed larger gap due to the problems from the curriculum, students’ motivation, textbook design and teachers’ preparation. Third, variables such as teachers’ teaching experience, educational background, students’ BCT test score, instructional time, teachers’ attendance of workshops and their exposure to related research were found to be significant in affecting teachers’ beliefs and practices. It is hoped that the study can contribute to more understanding of vocational high school teachers’ beliefs and practices in vocabulary learning strategies. Teachers may inspect their teaching process and raise the awareness of integrating vocabulary learning strategies into their teaching. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher further made suggestions to English teachers, teacher education institutes, the Ministry of Education and the textbook publishers. Results of this study might help enhance English teaching in vocational high schools.

台灣國中學生英語字彙學習策略之研究 / An Investigation into English Vocabulary Learning Strategies Used by Junior High School Students in Taiwan

字彙學習在語言學習上佔有非常重要的地位。本研究之目的旨在探究台灣國中學生在學習英語字彙時使用字彙學習策略的情形,首先,想了解各種不同字彙學習策略的使用頻率,並找出較常和較少使用的字彙學習策略,此外,想探討字彙學習策略的使用和字彙學習成就之間的關係,並找出不同字彙學習成就程度的學生在字彙學習策略使用上的差異之處。 本研究以147位國中三年級學生為調查對象,研究的工具為字彙學習策略問卷和字彙學習成就測驗,資料的分析採用SPSS,包含描述性統計、皮爾遜積差相關分析及單因子變異數分析。研究結果指出(1)整體而言,國中學生使用字彙學習策略的頻率並不高;(2)國中學生最常使用認知策略,最少使用社會策略;(3)國中學生比較常使用「表層」處理策略,比較少使用「深層」處理策略,例如,學生會注意單字的發音及拼法,並且偏愛重複背誦的方式,相反地,他們很少使用聯想或造句的方式來學習字彙;(4)國中學生的字彙學習成就和字彙策略的使用有顯著的相關性,在字彙學習上成就較高的學生,不僅會使用較多樣的策略來學習字彙,而且會更常使用這些字彙策略;(5)在字彙學習上成就較高的學生會比較注意上下文的關聯性、發音與拼法的相關性、字彙的詞性,他們會把單字分成音節而且會把字彙學習與自身的經驗相結合,另外,他們在教材的使用比較積極,相反地,成就較低的學生比較不注重單字的發音;(6)國中學生的學習策略來源主要是學校老師,他們選擇使用某些特定的策略主要原因是因為這些策略比較方便且容易使用,此外他們最想學的字彙學習策略與增加自然練習英語的環境有關。 最後,本研究建議老師應該 (1)教導學生如何使用各種不同的字彙學習策略;(2)在介紹策略的時候要考慮學生的程度;(3)教導學生聯合使用「表層」及「深層」處理策略;(4)教學生猜測單字的意思後,要查字典;(5)提供互動的活動讓學生在自然的環境下學習字彙;(6)鼓勵學生獨立規劃自己的字彙學習。 / Vocabulary learning is of critical importance to language acquisition, whether the language is first, second, or foreign. After suffering from being neglected for decades, vocabulary learning and teaching now have attracted considerable attention in the field of ESL or EFL research. The interest of research has been particularly in studying learners’ approaches to vocabulary learning. The present study aims to investigate the kinds of vocabulary learning strategies used by JHS students in Taiwan. Moreover, it examines whether there is any relationship between JHS students’ vocabulary strategy use and their vocabulary learning achievement. The data were collected from 147 third-grade students from a junior high school in Miaoli by means of two materials. The Vocabulary Learning Strategy Questionnaire was designated to survey what kinds of vocabulary learning strategies JHS students used and how often. The Vocabulary Achievement Test was used to discriminate the participants into different levels in vocabulary learning achievement. Data analysis was performed by SPSS, including descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlations, and one-way ANOVA. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows. (1) JHS students as a whole are moderate users of vocabulary learning strategies. (2) JHS students use cognitive strategies most frequently and social strategies least frequently. (3) JHS students employ “shallow” processing strategies more often than “deep” processing strategies. They particularly favor repetition strategies and pay more attention to the form of a word. On the other hand, they seldom put words in a meaningful context or utilize imagery techniques. (4) JHS students’ vocabulary strategy use is strongly related to their vocabulary learning achievement. Students with better vocabulary learning achievement not only use a wider range of strategies but also use them much more frequently. (5) JHS students with the highest level of vocabulary learning achievement pay much more attention to textual context, dividing words into syllables, active use of the learning materials, the matching between spelling and sound, word classes, and the personalization of information. On the other hand, JHS students with the lowest level of vocabulary learning achievement pay much less attention to the sound of a word. (6) JHS students learn vocabulary strategies primarily from school teachers and their major reason for strategy choice is because of convenience and ease of employment. The strategies that they want to learn most have something to do with increasing authentic input. According to the findings, several pedagogical implications are suggested. Teachers should (1) help JHS learners to raise their awareness of vocabulary learning strategy use; (2) take JHS learners' individual differences, such as vocabulary learning achievement, into account when recommending strategies; (3) instruct JHS learners to increase using the “shallow” processing and “deep” processing strategies in combination; (4) guide JHS students to use the “guessing” and “dictionary” strategies in combination; (5) provide JHS students with more authentic input and communicative interaction for vocabulary learning; (6) encourage JHS students to take charge of their vocabulary learning and view it as a life-long process. If JHS students can be equipped with the abilities to employ appropriate strategies, they can build up vocabulary more effectively and efficiently on their own.

Effects of Exposure to L1 Translation in Vocabulary Acquisition in English as a Foreign Language with College Students

[ES] La adquisición de vocabulario es uno de los principales desafíos para los estudiantes de idiomas y la falta de un vocabulario adecuado es el primer impedimento para una comunicación exitosa. A través de una revisión de la literatura sobre la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de vocabulario se identificó una brecha importante; la mayor parte de la investigación se lleva a cabo en condiciones controladas. Existe la necesidad de comprender la influencia de la enseñanza del vocabulario en el entorno real del aula. Este estudio examina específicamente la influencia de metodologías de enseñanza de vocabulario en el aula. Este estudio se realizó en una universidad privada con 37 participantes en un estudio piloto y 166 en el estudio principal, ambos divididos en grupos de control y experimentales utilizando un diseño de pretest-postest para analizar la influencia de la instrucción de vocabulario explícito en las clases. El conocimiento del vocabulario se evaluó antes y después de las intervenciones con una versión adaptada de la Escala de conocimiento del vocabulario (VKS por sus siglas en inglés) (Paribakht y Wesche, 1993). Esta investigación constó de dos fases. En primer lugar, se evaluó en un estudio piloto la instrucción de vocabulario explícito a través de la exposición visual al vocabulario objetivo con traducción al español y entrada auditiva, esta etapa se centró en el primer paso para el aprendizaje de vocabulario mencionado por Nation (2013): Prestar atención a las palabras. Los resultados obtenidos del estudio piloto no presentaron diferencias significativas entre el grupo control y el experimental. Por lo tanto, se decidió incluir una actividad adicional para mejorar el aprendizaje de vocabulario. En la segunda fase, que incluyó a 166 estudiantes, empleó una actividad de vocabulario basada en la web, así como la exposición visual. Esto se introdujo para evocar el segundo paso del aprendizaje de vocabulario: Recuperación. Esta metodología brindó oportunidades para que los participantes exploraran el vocabulario con una nueva herramienta de aprendizaje; permitiendo a los estudiantes no solo notar el vocabulario clave, sino también recuperarlo. Los resultados del estudio principal fueron alentadores, el grupo experimental superó al grupo de control en la prueba posterior (p<0,001) mostrando una mejora significativa en la mayoría de las palabras. Podemos suponer que la metodología adicional incluida en el estudio principal podría ser responsable de la mejora del vocabulario. Después de la intervención, una entrevista semiestructurada con los participantes del grupo experimental obtuvo información sobre sus ideas sobre su propio aprendizaje y la metodología utilizada. Los participantes dieron una opinión positiva de las actividades basadas en la web y reconocieron la importancia del desarrollo del vocabulario en su proceso de aprendizaje de idiomas. Este estudio destaca la influencia positiva de la instrucción de vocabulario explícito en el entorno del aula de aprendizaje de inglés. A través d'una revisió de la literatura sobre l'ensenyança i l'aprenentatge de vocabulari es va identificar una bretxa important; la major part de la investigació es du a terme en condicions controlades. Hi ha la necessitat de comprendre la influència de l'ensenyança del vocabulari en l'entorn real de l'aula. Aquest estudi examina específicament la influència de metodologies d'ensenyança de vocabulari en l'aula. Este estudi es va realitzar en una universitat privada amb 37 participants en un estudi pilot i 166 en l'estudi principal, ambdós dividits en grups de control i experimentals utilitzant un disseny de pretest-postest per a analitzar la influència de la instrucció de vocabulari explícit en les classes. El coneixement del vocabulari es va avaluar abans i després de les intervencions amb una versió adaptada de l'Escala de coneixement del vocabulari (VKS per les seues sigles en anglès) (Paribakht i Wesche, 1993) . Podem suposar que la metodologia addicional inclosa en l'estudi principal podria ser responsable de la millora del vocabulari. Després de la intervenció, una entrevista semiestructurada amb els participants del grup experimental va obtindre informació sobre les seues idees sobre el seu propi aprenentatge i la metodologia utilitzada. En este sentit, al final, es discutixen les implicacions pedagògiques. / [EN] Vocabulary acquisition is one of the major challenges for language learners and the lack of proper vocabulary is the first impediment to successful communication. A literature review of vocabulary teaching and learning identified an important gap; most research is conducted under controlled conditions. There is a necessity to understand the influence of vocabulary instruction in real classroom settings. This study specifically examines the influence of vocabulary teaching methodologies in the classroom. This study was conducted in a private university with 37 participants in a pilot study and 166 in the main study, both divided into control and experimental groups using a pretest-posttest design in order to analyse the influence of explicit vocabulary instruction in classes. Vocabulary knowledge was assessed before and after interventions with an adapted version of the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) (Paribakht & Wesche, 1993). This research consisted of two phases. First, explicit vocabulary instruction through visual exposure to target vocabulary with Spanish translation and aural input was assessed in a pilot study. This stage focused on the first step for vocabulary learning mentioned by Nation (2013): Noticing. Results obtained from the pilot study presented no significant difference between the control and the experimental group. Therefore, it was decided to include an additional activity to enhance vocabulary learning. In the second phase, which included 166 students, employed a web-based vocabulary activity as well as the visual exposure. This was introduced to evoke the second step of vocabulary learning: Retrieval. This methodology provided opportunities for participants to explore vocabulary with a new learning tool; allowing students to not only notice target vocabulary, but also to retrieve it. The results from the main study were encouraging, the experimental group outperformed the control group in the posttest (p<0.001) showing significant improvement in most words in the experimental group. We may assume that the additional methodology included in the main study could be responsible for the vocabulary enhancement. After the intervention, a semi-structured interview with participants from the experimental group elicited information about their ideas toward their own learning and the methodology used. Participants gave a positive opinion of web-based activities and acknowledged the importance of vocabulary development in their language-learning process. This study highlights the positive influence of explicit vocabulary instruction in English Learning classroom settings. Technology provides opportunities to replicate this methodology with little time investment; a beneficial tool for teachers and students. The role of English academic vocabulary on reading comprehension of grade 11 English First Additional Language learners

Abstract in English, Sepedi and Sesotho / In this thesis, the researcher used an explanatory sequential mixed methods research design to investigate the role of English academic vocabulary on reading comprehension of grade 11 English First Additional Language (EFAL) learners in the Free State province, Fezile Dabi district in South Africa. The current study is an attempt to determine whether the breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge have a bearing on grade 11 EFAL learners' reading comprehension, and to examine which one of these variables, that is, breadth or depth of vocabulary knowledge, makes a more important contribution to reading comprehension. It also attempts to investigate the Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) used by grade 11 EFAL learners. For the non-experimental quantitative study, the participants of the study were thirty EFAL learners who were chosen based on available sampling. To collect the relevant data, two tests measuring breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge (Section A and Section B) and a reading comprehension were administered to all participants. To achieve its aim 1, two independent variables namely, the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) which measures vocabulary breadth and Word Associate Test (WAT) which measures vocabulary depth were used. Then, the dependent variable was the reading comprehension test in which the participants were asked to read the passages and answer some multiple choice questions. Pearson product-moment correlations and multiple regression were chosen as the dominant techniques for the statistical analyses. The results obtained from the analysis of the data indicated that while both depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge play an important role in EFAL learners' reading comprehension performance, depth of vocabulary knowledge makes a more important contribution. The results further revealed that depth and breadth of vocabulary knowledge are positively correlated, that is, those learners who had large vocabulary size had a deeper knowledge of the words, too. Then, the findings from the qualitative study based on the data collected through eight focus group discussion participants about the VLS used by grade 11 EFAL learners, highlight that it is important to explore and broaden learners’ vocabulary learning strategic knowledge.
