Construction and validation of a volleyball proficiency test : cognitive and psychomotor domains

Baydock, Donna Anne January 1985 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to construct and validate an assessment tool that could be used to determine the level of cognitive and psychomotor proficiency possessed at the introductory level of volleyball. The proposed test was administered to 24 males and 24 females evenly stratified into three skill levels: elite, instructed and novice. Analysis of variance was used to determine construct validity while the Pearson Product Moment Correlation, kappa coefficient and Generalizability coefficient were all used to determine reliability of various components of the test. Correlation between test components was investigated as was the relationship between achievement of mastery and skill level as demonstrated by the Chi Square statistic. Data analysis led to the conclusion that all test components were valid and reliable measures of introductory level volleyball skill with some caution being advised in the interpretation of the kappa coefficient. Test components were related but not redundant and nine of the 11 test components showed a significant relationship between achievement of mastery and skill level. / Education, Faculty of / Curriculum and Pedagogy (EDCP), Department of / Graduate

Self evaluation in volleyball : a cognitive approach

Alnwick, Margot D. (Margot Deborah) January 1994 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a self-evaluation instrument that students would be able to use to assess their metacognitive awareness of volleyball skill and knowledge. The Self Evaluation in Volleyball Questionnaire (SEV) was designed to include a series of self-evaluation items within the five areas identified in a knowledge-based approach to skill acquisition; namely: procedural, declarative, affective, metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive skill. / The reliability, face and content validity of the SEV were found to be very acceptable. The scores on the SEV show that the questionnaire was easily understood by the students, but the students found certain sections were more difficult to answer. Students were categorized by their teacher into top, middle and bottom skill groups. Analysis of variance procedures showed that there were significant differences in SEV scores due to skill level, which demonstrated the value and the sensitivity of the SEV in differentiating such skill levels. Even though this was a descriptive study, it was also shown that the instructional programme did have a positive effect on the students' SEV scores.

In-season strength and power changes in elite female volleyball players accompanying periodized strength and ballistic training

Rogers, Ryan A. January 2001 (has links)
Eight males participated in this study to examine the effects of an essential amino acid supplement, Rebuild 1111, on cortisol secretions induced by resistance training. Subjects were randomly allocated to either branched chain amino acids (BCAA) orplacebo (P) groups. The protocol followed a double blind cross-over design whereby both groups participated in three weeks of supplementation followed by a week of resistance training with continued supplementation. Within this week, four resistance training sessions occurred, each of which comprised three sets of six to eight repetitions of leg press, leg curl, leg extension, chest press, military press, latissimus pulldown, dumbbell curl, and tricep pushdown, at 75 - 80% of IRM. This protocol was repeated, consuming the alternative treatment, following a five week period with no supplement or training. Blood was drawn at baseline, after three weeks of supplementation (day 2 1), two days of training (day 24), four days of training (day 27), and 48 hours after final training session (day 28). Serum was analyzed for cortisol (C), testosterone (T), and creatine kinase (CK). Subjects were allocated to either light (Group A) or heavy (Group B) due to the high correlation (r = 0.736 to 0.966) between mass and the measured variables, and theheterogeneous nature of these two subgroups. A repeated measures ANOVA with a significant level set at p<0.05, found no difference between BCAA and P for either group for any of the measured variables. Group A however had consistently lower serum C and CK, and higher T and testosterone:cortisol ratio with BCAA supplementation. Group B hormone response was inconsistent with training and supplementation. Group B CK was consistently lower with BCAA supplementation. Conclusions: There is some evidence that BCAA supplementation may reduce the catabolic stress response and cellular breakdown due to resistance training. Further study investigating the effect of varied dose and mass of subjects is required to elucidate these findings further. For statistical significance, larger sample size is needed. / School of Physical Education

The influence of perceptual training on volleyball performance among adolescent females

Tyry, Tuula-Maija A. 07 June 1993 (has links)
This study investigated the influence of perceptual training on volleyball serve-reception performance. The subjects were ten female high-school volleyball players. Subjects were randomly assigned in equal numbers to a control or an experimental group. Both groups were tested on two occasions, prior to and following a three-week perceptual training intervention. The pre- and post-training testing sessions consisted of a volleyball serve-reception test and a perceptual-motor test that simulated the serve-reception. At the end of the post-training session, a transfer serve-reception test was conducted. The results showed a significant positive relationship between years of experience playing competitive volleyball and performance score obtained in the pre-training serve-reception test. No relationship existed between performance score and starting age. Also, no significant relationships were found between the performance score obtained for the pre-training perceptual-motor test and the amount of competitive playing experience or, starting age. The results of a 2 x 2 (Time x Group) repeated measures MANOVA, incorporating the dependent variables of mean performance score for the serve-reception test and the standard deviation of the movement time elapsed prior to intercepting the ball, indicated that perceptual training was not significantly related to performance on a serve-reception test. Two separate 2 x 2 (Time x Group) repeated measures ANOVAs, analyzing the performance scores obtained for the pre- and post-training perceptual-motor test under two different viewing conditions (long vs. short) did not reveal any differences between the groups for either viewing condition. The transfer serve-reception test also did not reveal any statistically significant differences between the groups. In conclusion, the results indicated that the three-week perceptual training-program used in this study did not lead to significant improvements in volleyball serve-reception performance among adolescent female players. In future research, a motor component should be incorporated in the perceptual training-program to allow for the coupling of perception and action. Alternatively, a perceptual-motor adjustment period could be provided to facilitate the recoupling of perception and action following a perceptual training period. / Graduation date: 1994

Improving the athletic performance of highly skilled college volleyball players through the use of a videotape treatment package

Lowe, Steven Keating 01 January 1981 (has links)
A multiple baseline across behaviors design was used to test the effectiveness of a treatment package involving the use of a videotape recorder to improve the performance of college women volleyball players. The subjects were four highly skilled athletes, as evidenced by thei.r participation in the University of the Pacific volleyball program, ranked second nationally during the 1980-81 season. The treatment package consisted of the following: (a) zooming in with a video camera on particular aspects of the players' performances; (b) attempts to change only one aspect of the performance of a skill rather than the entire skill; (c) cueing and corrective feedback provided by the coach during the players' viewing of the resulting videotapes; (d) the players immediately correcting their errors in performance after viewing the videotapes and (e) multiple viewings by the players of videotapes of their correct performances of the volleyball skills. The results indicated that all of the subjects benefited from the videotape treatment package. Two of the players showed improvement in the two volleyball skills for which the treatment was given. The other two players showed improvement in one of the two volleyball skills for which the treatment was given. For three of the four players their improved practice performances with the videotape treatment also resulted in improved performances during scrimmages for at least one of the two target behaviors.

Keller's personalized system of instruction in a college level volleyball course

Cregger, Ronald N. 04 August 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe the effects and influences of Keller’s Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) in the psychomotor domain through a college level volleyball course. PSI was implemented in a beginning volleyball course as part of the Basic Instructional Program at a Southeastern university. Specific sources of data were used to describe process results and ensure fidelity of the course design to the PSI model. The results of a discipline data analysis indicated that PSI demonstrated Keller’s stated characteristics - self-pacing, mastery-based learning, teacher motivation, and emphasis on the written word in the psychomotor domain. The findings from this investigation support the conclusions that PSI is a viable alternative to conventional styles of instructional design in a college level volleyball program. / Master of Science

Analise das ações de jogo e suas implicações para o treinamento tecnico-tatico da categoria infanto-juvenil feminina (16 e 17 anos)

Gouvea, Fabio Luiz 02 February 2005 (has links)
Orientador : Marcelo Belem Silveira Lopes / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Fisica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-04T02:44:14Z (GMT). The practice of physical training in team sports contemplates scientifically structured methodologies and solid theorical referential. Otherwise, the same proceedings cannot be noted on technical and tactical training, either, the interventions are realized simply in agreement with that the coaches believe being essential in a right time. The studies about performances and its demands became a good option to reach the training optimization on the aspects above mentioned, which are very important but did not yet obtain enough scientific approach. In this study, 16 volleyball matches (56 games) from the women-under 17 class were filmed, and all the actions were analyzed in quantitative (totals and percentages) and qualitative forms (indexes of errors, efficiency and efficacy). It was developed a specific instrument for these analysis, validated by the Kappa Statistical Index. The Chi-Square was also used to test if there were significantly differences among the actions realized by the players in these games. The results evidenced that the Receiver-Hitters has a higher demand on spike, and the Universal-Spikers has the best indexes in this drill. On block it was evidenced the need for a training that aims the tactical and collective aspect of this drill, thus all the players had very similar results in all analysis. On defense and reception it was clearly evident the higher demands and the best indexes of Liberos. These data show that the players analyzed begins to show some specialization characters visible in high level volleyball athletes, either the technical and tactical training which they are submitted takes to this specialization, and the literature about the theme don¿t do many objections about it, asserting that many of their indicators support a training with these characteristics with no great harm or losses for them / Mestrado / Ciencia do Desporto / Mestre em Educação Física
