This dissertation consists of three chapters discussing the effects of changing trade barriers for Canadian firms and a final chapter investigating hazardous waste trade, one of the important environmental issues in international business. The first three chapters use simple theoretical structures and firm level data to examine the evolution of Canadian manufacturing following the tariff changes imposed by the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement. Chapter one considers the influence of falling tariffs on firm survival, chapter two investigates how trade liberalization effects firm growth in terms of size and productivity, and the third chapter considers the implication o f falling trade barriers for firm financial structure. The fourth chapter diverges from the first three to explore the determinants of international shipments in hazardous waste using a gravity model with factor endowment conditions and waste trade data from 89 countries.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the distributional side of environmental risks and burdens and, more particularly, to explain the significance of including intergenerational and intragenerational equity concerns within the fashioning of a legal regime governing the transboundary movement of radioactive waste. The thesis focuses on fairness and equity considerations between generations (intergenerational equity) and within contemporary generations (intragenerational equity) in the context of transboundary movements of radioactive wastes. First, a detailed exploration of the emergence of intergenerational and intragenerational equity principles is conducted. Then, the implementing principles of intergenerational and intragenerational equity with regard to environmental risk and burden distribution are put forward. Further, sensitive to the equity dimensions of the transboundary movement of radioactive waste, the thesis explains transboundary movement within a broader political and economic framework, and illustrates the potential transboundary and transgenerational externalities arising from transboundary movement. Management strategies available to help prevent or reduce transboundary and transgenerational externalities are examined. In addition, the evolution of the legal regime governing transboundary movements is reviewed and proposals for reform of the current regime are presented. Finally, the thesis concludes with concrete observations and recommendations. Through the lens of intergenerational and intragenerational equity, the thesis evaluates the fairness of environmental risk and burden distribution, spatially and intertemporally, in the context of transboundary movements of radioactive wastes.

An assessment of the groundwater quality at the Olusosun landfill in Lagos, Nigeria was conducted to determine interactions between the landfill wastes and the groundwater and the potential migration of pollutants into the neighbouring communities. Groundwater samples were collected from four locations within the landfill bi-weekly for three months (March 19, 2013 to May 28, 2013), and analysed for water quality parameters and metals. The results indicated that the concentrations of some metals (Cr, Fe, Cd, Mn, and Co) and other water quality parameters in some sampling locations were slightly above the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) standard limits. Lead was also detected in the groundwater samples, though at concentrations within the standard limits. Conclusively, the Olusosun landfill has impaired groundwater quality, thereby, posing environmental and human health concerns to the neighbouring communities of Oregun, Ketu and Ojota.
