The main objective of the thesis is to contribute to the field of entrepreneurship in the areas of new firm formation, regional economic development and individual behavior. First, the results indicate that regional new firm formation activity is path-dependent over time. The main factors that determine the level and the development of regional new firm formation are the entrepreneurial culture and the level of innovation activity. Second, the empirical analyses show that entrepreneurship is a source of regional economic development. New firms have a long term employment effects and new firms serve as a conduit for knowledge spillovers. Third, the entrepreneurial environment may influence the individual decision to start a business. The empirical analyses are carried out on the regional and individual level. This thesis uses the establishment file of the IAB and the SOEP dataset for the empirical analyses.

In this thesis advanced regression methods are applied to discuss and investigate highly relevant research questions in the areas of finance and economics. In the field of credit risk the thesis investigates a hierarchical model which allows to obtain a consensus score, if several ratings are available for each firm. Autoregressive processes and random effects are used to model both a correlation structure between and within the obligors in the sample. The model also allows to validate the raters themselves. The problem of model uncertainty and multicollinearity between the explanatory variables is addressed in the other two applications. Penalized regressions, like bridge regressions, are used to handle multicollinearity while model averaging techniques allow to account for model uncertainty. The second part of the thesis makes use of Bayesian elastic nets and Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA) techniques to discuss long-term economic growth. It identifies variables which are significantly related to long-term growth. Additionally, it illustrates the superiority of this approach in terms of predictive accuracy. Finally, the third part combines ridge regressions with BMA to identify macroeconomic variables which are significantly related to aggregated firm failure rates. The estimated results deliver important insights for e.g., stress-test scenarios. (author's abstract)

Die Anzahl an Forschungsbeiträgen zu sozialem Kapital verdeutlicht das Interesse an der Integration von wirtschafts- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Herangehensweisen. Die Dissertation leistet einen Diskussionsbeitrag anhand der Frage, in welcher Hinsicht soziales Kapital als Mittel zur Bekämpfung von Armut gefördert werden kann und welcher Zusammenhang zwischen sozialer Infrastruktur (öffentliche Einrichtungen für Bildung, Gesundheit, Wohn-/Freizeitwesen) und wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung besteht. Zur Umsetzung eines sozioökonomischen Forschungsansatzes in Anlehnung an Althaler (Hrsg., 1995) wurde eine ganzheitliche Perspektive am Beispiel Chiles eingenommen. Die Analyse der Wirtschafts- und Sozialstatistik, des sozio-historischen Hintergrundes sowie von drei Sozialprogrammen zur Förderung von sozialem Kapital und der Erfahrungen in zwei Ortschaften ergab, dass das Verständnis und die Anpassung an das vorhandene Sozialgefüge eine entscheidende Voraussetzung für den Erfolg von sozialpolitischen Maßnahmen und die Förderung von sozialem Kapital ist. Die Reduktion von Armut hängt nicht nur von direkten Maßnahmen zur sozialen Integration, der Beteiligung der Betroffenen, den Möglichkeiten zur sozialen Interaktion mit anderen und der speziellen Betreuung benachteiligter Personengruppen ab, sondern auch von der Beschaffenheit der gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen, der Machtverteilung sowie der Bildung von Vertrauen und von gleichen Chancen für alle durch individuelle Befähigung. Die Aufarbeitung der chilenischen sozialwissenschaftlichen Literatur hat die These bestätigt, dass die erhebliche Reduktion von Armut in Chile seit der Rückkehr zur Demokratie im Jahr 1990 wesentlich auf die politische Schwerpunktverlagerung und Investitionen in die soziale Infrastruktur zurückgeführt werden kann.
