A research report submitted to Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, 2012. / The study aims to identify the variables which best predict completion of four year undergraduate degree programmes, in the Schools of Construction Economics and Management and Architecture and Planning, at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa. The research is important to the University and in particular the schools under investigation, because there are only a few studies done in South African universities on this topic and it will contribute to the knowledge on variables that positively influence Time-to-Degree. Selected demographic variables such as Gender, Race, and Home Language were analysed. Other variables considered include: University Courses, First Year Scores, Matric Aggregate, Financial Aid and Residence Status.
The Binary Logistic Models, a Multinomial Logistic Model and Classification Tree Model were developed to test for the significance of the predictor variables at 5% level of significance. The Statistical packages that were used in the analysis of data are Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Statistical Analysis System (SAS).
The logistic regression models indicated that Home Language is English and the first year university course Building Quantities 1 are the most important predictors of Time-to-Degree. The other variables that were significant are Gender is Female, Not Repeat, Theory & Practice of QS 1, Architectural Representation I, Building Quantities 1, Construction Planning and Design, Physics Building and Planning for Property Developers. Architectural Representation I, Building Quantities 1, Construction Planning and Design, Physics Building and Planning for Property Developers. Matric Aggregate is an important predictor of university first year success though it has no impact on TTD. The Classification Tree indicated that passing first year at university was significant as it increases the chances of completing the degree programme within the minimum time.

goundes@therapy.wits.ac.za / Orthopaedic manipulative therapy (OMT) like other areas of physiotherapy, is a rapidly advancing field. To keep abreast of changes, curricula need regular evaluation and updating. The curriculum consists of many components that may vary from content to timetabling.
The aim of this study was to determine how past graduates from the University of the Witwatersrand perceived the OMT curriculum with regards to content, teaching methods and clinical learning. This information will contribute to an overall evaluation of the present OMT curriculum.
The sample consisted of graduates from 1997-1999. Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather the information. Some interviews were carried out following analysis of answers to the questionnaire to clarify issues or gain additional information.
Results indicated that eighty one percent of the sample found the content relevant to clinical practice, but forty two percent found certain aspects of the content inadequate. The following areas of content were deficient: sixty percent found information on patient education, advice and counseling related to OMT inadequate. Fifty five percent would have liked to be more exposed to research in this area. Sixty seven percent felt that teaching of clinical reasoning skills was lacking. Ninety four percent would have liked information on other joint mobilization concepts.
It was perceived that active learning methods were more effective than passive learning methods. Fifty eight percent found tutorials, sixty eight percent found practical sessions, and fifty eight percent found workshops very effective.
With regards to clinical learning, seventy seven percent found supervision very helpful in clinical placements. Eighty one percent found patient presentations helpful, and seventy one percent found discussion of patients with lecturers very helpful.
Most responses indicated that the OMT curriculum was relevant to current practice in South Africa but inadequate in certain specific areas.

(Community Nursing) / The emphasis has moved from curative to services in South Africa, therefore the assurance mechanisms is now essential primary health care establishing of quality with the announcement of the devolution of primary health care services to the local authority, by the Minister of Health in 1991, the role fulfillment and accountability of the community health nurse becomes much more complex and greater demands are continuously made. The need for standards in child health nursing in a local authority led to this study. Relevant literature was explored in respect of the main variables and concepts of the child health nursing practice, whereby theoretical validity is confirmed for the formulation of the nursing standards in this respect. Nursing standards for child health nursing as rendered by the community health nurse in the local authorities on the Witwatersrand, were formulated. These standards were validated by a representative group of experts on regional level. The validation process consisted of a two-stage research technique. The statistical validity was calculated by means of a content validity index for each standard. All the standards (N=86) were considered valid, but sixteen (19%) require reformulation standards form the basis of the quality assurance process. These should equip the community health nurse with valuable guidelines to promote quality nursing care in respect of child health in the local authority. It is recommended that these standards should serve as optimum standards for the community health nurse concerned with child health nursing in the local authority.

An attempt was made to establish whether there would be any significant differences in life satisfaction, depression and self-concept, between economically active and non-active elderly persons. The research design was of an ex post facto nature. The sample consisted of 128 subjects between the ages of 60 and 80 years and was drawn from a middle to upper socio-economic population in the Witwatersrand area. Fifty of the respondents were still employed full-time, 16 were employed part-time and 62 were retired. Persons who reported poor physical health were excluded from the study. Wits imagined: an investigation into Wits University's public roles and responsibilities, 1922 - 1994Odendaal, Rehana Thembeka 18 February 2021 (has links)
This thesis examines the public roles and responsibilities of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in the period 1922-1994. It does this through a close investigation of four moments in the history of the University, namely the foundation of Wits (1910s and 1920s); early debates about the entry of Black staff and students (1930s and 1940s); the Academic Freedom protests (starting in the mid-1950s) and the formation of the Wits History Workshop (from 1977 to the early 1990s). In each of these moments, social roles and perceptions of public responsibility were actively asserted or challenged through engagements between internal-university constituencies and external communities. The thesis identifies three core roles for Wits University over this period: providing technical and professional training; generating and authenticating expert knowledge and shaping people's ideas of citizenship. The practical and conceptual understandings of these three roles, however, have shifted over time as the University's conceptualisation of the communities it serves has changed. These shifts have happened in conversation with different civic and state actors. The thesis has found that ideas of the public roles of Wits are informed by an institutional sense of self-referential authority accumulated through various moments and practices in the University's history. This self-referential authority depends on a selective recalling of particular events and the ability of multiple narratives about the University's identity to circulate simultaneously. This self-referential authority draws on Wits' origins as an institution of late-Imperial modernity and its legacy as a so-called ‘open' university. Understanding the practices and legacies that have created these narratives through an examination of the University's history, is particularly important in the present moment when the future public responsibilities of South African universities are being vigorously questions and debated.

The upper division of the Witwatersrand system in the Virginia and Merrie-Spruit mining areasWinter, Hendrik De la Rey 19 July 2013 (has links)
This treatise provides a record of the stratigraphy and structure in the southernmost extension of the Witwatersrand System and is based on the results obtained from bore-hole cores and from detailed mapping underground. Several disconformities encountered in these sediments are interpreted as marginal disconformities of a geosynclinal basin. It is contended that the bankets were formed in neritic and littoral environments closely associated with profiles of equilibrium., such as disconformities, where conditions favour the concentration of heavy minerals, including gold and uraninite. The composite radiometric log of the area south of the Sand river, drawn up by Dr. D.J. Simpson in 1951, is revised by including into it the portion of the log of bore-hole K.A.2 in which the Intermediate Reefs occur. Chloritoid is confined to the Lower Footwall beds, the Khaki Shale Marker and the Upper Shale Marker. The variation of the optical properties of chloritic minerals indicate that a wide range of these minerals exist in the sediments. Pyritic stringers appear to be natural concentrations of such heavy minerals as pyrite, ilmenite, chromite and zircon. Heavy mineral investigations, to be of correlative value, in the case of the Witwatersrand System would require considerable basic research. D.Phil. / The purpose of this study is to investigate the situation of the white labourer in the secondary industries during the years 1924 to 1933 on the Witwatersrand. This research is, however, not limited to working conditions such as wages, working hours and physical circumstances, but it also takes a look at the daily living conditions of the labourer. In the first place the study focuses on the secondary industries as milieu within which the labourer functioned. The development and growth of the secondary industries were to a large extent inspired and encouraged by the First World War, the mining industry and also urbanisation. These factors led to certain demands on the secondary industries that had to be met. The above factors not only contributed to increased production and: markets, but, also created much needed job opportunities for the inhabitants of the Witwatersrand. During and after the war the industrial growth was to a large extent without direction. The labourer also had only the labour union which he could appeal to. To provide the necessary order and direction, important legislation had been introduced since 1918 to serve as framework within which employer and employee could act. When the Pact Government assumed power in 1924 industrial growth was therefore not only further stimulated, but the government made a conscious effort to eliminate problems between employer and employee. Then a look is taken at the men, women and youth labourers.
