Affordable and Sustainable Design for Rural Houses in Cambodia

Lourn, Lila (Lee) 18 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates a new prototype for housing in rural Kampot, Cambodia with a focus on the health and safety of the inhabitants. This study came about because traditional Cambodian houses are rapidly disappearing and being replaced with concrete walls on the lower level, a space that was previously left as open- concept and was comfortable as such in the Cambodian culture. By studying both traditional and contemporary houses during my research time in Cambodia, I discovered that it was not the vernacular home-making techniques that needed improvement, but rather the concerns of health and safety that needed to be addressed. My thesis proposal is to design an affordable and sustainable home in rural Cambodia with the primary focus on the following issues: waste management, water collection/filtration, Cultural adaptability, local material palettes, light quality, airflow, cooking suitability, and security.

Grove Houses / Ny arkitektur i Flängan

Dahlberg, Mattias January 2015 (has links)
Is it possible to create new architecture in an area with a strict architectural costume without making a pastiche or turning your back against the existing architecture? The village of Flängan in Bergslagen is quintessential Swedish countryside. When moving along the gravelled main road, one can not help but notice the homogenous architectural character of the village - two story wooden houses with gable roofs, red-painted facades and white corners.  The project aims to create new architecture in such an area without being bound by the traditional formal rules of the existing houses, which is often copied to create new “contextual architecture”.

Reps or agents or both: Managers' rationale behind how to organize the sales function : About the rationale of decision-makers in manufacturing companies of the Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry behind the organization of sales forces.

Köhler, Florian January 2016 (has links)
Problem - Decision makers shape the structure of the sales function, but it is unclear how they go about it and why. The rationale for making certain decisions need to be analyzed in order to understand why different decision makers apply different sales strategies. Topic - The Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry consists of many actors with no clear market leader. The sales force seems to mainly consists of external sales agents (manufacturers' representatives, also called reps), though some manufacturers also employ direct sales agents at the manufacturing company. Prefabricated wooden houses corresponded to 86% of all building permits requested during 2015. Purpose - This thesis aims to explore decision-makers' rationale behind the organization of manufacturers' sales forces in the Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry. Method - Semi-structures interviews with decision makers at manufacturing companies in the Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry have been conducted in order to fulfill the purpose of this study. The empirical findings are then analyzed based on theory that has been collected through partly inductive, partly deductive approaches. Main results - Decision makers use different arguments to justify their strategies. Many different rationale applied translates into no clear pattern besides the one that there seems to be no clear pattern. Arguments for a rationale decision are given without analytical proof for an assumption. Some interviewees are in essence for an integrated sales force, though might also work with reps.

Casas móveis: experiência na região oeste do Paraná / Mobile houses: the experience in western Paraná

Gutierrez, Ricardo Marques 07 May 2008 (has links)
This study seeks initially for investigating ways of habitational mobility, especially in urban contexts. Starting from the hypothesis that mobility is an existing and increasing phenomenon, they present their reflexes in the architecture. The architecture proposes turned in essence to static forms, a reflection about its interest and possibilities of mobile house production. To contribute with the architecture in view of this paradigm are investigated groups marked by the mobility in the history, exposed the possible effects about the urban soil matter presented the juridical aspects related to habitation especially to its mobility and shown some models of used mobility, yet after field research a wooden house transposition case is exposed, built in its majority by the migrant carpenters and emigrants in Paraná´s West from 1940 to 1970. These constructions that formerly sustained most habitational demand of the regions they are today facilitators of a local practice that expresses contemporary actions of global proportions.

Barbosa, Juliana Cortez 23 October 2003 (has links)
The civil construction sector today is considered not only the greatest consumer of material and energy resources in urban centres, but also a major generator of waste. The sector needs a reformulation for the improvement of production and for the prevention of pollution. It is therefore essential to consider cleaner and more efficient technological processes, i. e., to decrease environmental impacts through a more rational use of resources (with lower consumption of energy anbd less production-related waste), minimizing the squandering of scarce resources. The study reported on here was based on data collected from ten pine sawmills in the region of Sorocaba, state of São Paulo, Brazil. This region currently possesses the greatest potential for sawed wood in the state of São Paulo, 42.3% of all the forest planted in State, and is the state\'s largest pinewood producer, about 58.5%. Those datas were also aplicated to calculate the energy consumed for sawn eucalyptus pieces. Given the relevance of energy consumption and the quantity of produced rubbish by the construction sector, the purpose of this work is to analyse the consumption of energy and the produced waste in the productive cycle of boards for wooden housing, from the cutting stage, processing, and prefabrication of componentes to the assembly of wall panels. This study involved wooden boards of commercial dimensions applied in three different types of panelling in three buildings. Two of theseprefabricated systems, executed in the city of São Carlos, have a structural system made of sawn eucalyptus wood with double walls of pine. One of them is lined internally with wainscoting and externally with horizontal decking, while the other system has internal wainscotting and external match boarding. The third system, built in Campos de Jordão, is composed of a structural framework of sawed pine, with external double shutter walls of 2.2 mm match boarding and simple internal walls consisting of a single layer of 2.2 mm thick match boarding. The consumption of energy was measured for each kind of board produced, calculated from the number of cutting operations and the power of each machines involved. The produced waste was calculated by the area of removed particulate material. The energy performance index were expressed in kWh consumed per square meter of wood panel produced (enegy) and in m3 produced per square meter of wood panel produced (waste). These data will serve as the basis for a comparison with various types of construction materials used in wall systems (concrete, brick and others), and provide information for the analysis of the sustainability of wooden construction systems from the standpoint of energy consumption.

Supply Chain Integration in the Swedish Wooden House industry

Odehammar, Max, Bui, Ahn Thai January 2018 (has links)
Supply Chain Integration (SCI) has been found by previous research to be correlated withincreased business performance. However, the rate of implementation of the concept isdependent on the industry, implying that this is determined by industry-specific factors. Thepurpose of this study was therefore to investigate how the Swedish wooden house industryapproaches SCI, and thereby identify industry-specific factors that influence integration. Toaccomplish this, an exploratory multiple case study was conducted, in which Swedish woodenhouse manufacturers and associated actors were interviewed. The study confirmed that thewooden house industry is affected by factors limiting SCI implementation, and that companiesin the industry are not integrated to any significant degree. Further, two industry-specificfactors were discovered to be inhibiting integration. First, the degree of product customizationgranted to customers by house manufacturers determines how much control over procurementdecisions is retained, and thereby potential for integration with suppliers. Customer orientationwas found to inhibit SCI in the wooden house industry due to its effect on productcustomization, in spite of previous literature classifying it as a driver. Secondly, thefragmentation of the contractor market was found to force house manufacturers to deal with amultitude of small actors to perform the on-site construction function, limiting investments inrelationships for any one given actor. The study also found that levels of internal integrationwas generally not at a level at which the benefits of SCI can be fully realized.
