Youth Political Participation in the Midst of the South Africa General Elections : A Case Study Analysis in the Langa Township / Youth Political Participation in the Midst of the South Africa General Elections : A Case Study Analysis in the Langa TownshipKerr, Jamie January 2019 (has links)
Declining youth political participation among democracies has been a major issue and a widely researched debate in recent years. Most research has targeted youth in democracies in general but has failed to acknowledge the youth living in poverty such as those living in South African townships. This thesis was a case study investigation in the Langa township in Cape Town. It aimed to understand the perceptions and opinions of youth in the township regarding political participation. It aimed to understand why the trend is showing that political participation is declining and to further understand how these young people choose to participate as well as how they best believe they can make a difference. This study included interviews with ten youth respondents from Langa. Due to the small number of respondents, the conclusions drawn from this study should not be applied to the entire youth population in townships, nor the entire youth population in Langa. More research is needed in this field with larger sample groups to make more general conclusions representative of the entire population. From this thesis, a conclusion can be drawn that the pedagogical political participation model can explain youth political participation to a certain degree. However, there are additional reasons outside of the framework that helps explain political participation. It was found that youth in Langa lack confidence in their government due to the lack of development and major issues that the township is faced with. This refers to issues such as housing, electricity, water, employment, and education. This lack of confidence leads them to withdraw from formal participation methods such as voting. Due to these pressing issues, the respondents find that more change can occur through informal methods of participation such as protesting. Therefore, this study concludes that youth in the Langa township prefer informal methods of participation with the main focus on protests. This is because it is the best option to voice their opinions, create awareness, grab the politician’s attention and create change

Youth, food justice and the practice of everyday politics: a case study of agricultural resistance in the Spring Ridge CommonsMallett, April 17 January 2013 (has links)
This study uses the concepts of everyday politics and cultural resistance to explore how young people are experimenting with ‘free spaces’ in which to develop alternative ideas and practices within the food justice movement. Through a case study of the Spring Ridge Commons – a youth-generated free space – this research describes how youth are redefining relationships to place and to people by practicing alternative foodways like urban foraging; creating decommodified food sources; sharing skills and knowledge through peer-to-peer networks; building community through relationships of mutual support; and experimenting with non-hierarchical governance. Such practices have potential implications for child and youth care such as: reconnecting youth and adults through shared practice and meaningful work in “real life” politics and community building, reconceptualizing 'youth' and 'adult' such that both have greater access to acts of cultural production, and creating experiences of democracy in everyday life. / Graduate

The Political Behaviour of Youth in Whitefish River First NationNazary, Theo 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation considers the political behaviour of youth in Whitefish River First Nation. This small Ojibway community located near Sudbury, Ontario is used as a case study to inquire into the political experiences, attitudes and behaviour of youth. Rooted in Community-Based Research and Indigenous Research Principles, conversations were carried out in a circle-method referred to as Discussion Circles to assess the political behaviour of youth between the ages of 16 and 25. While this study is heavily qualitative-focused, it includes some quantitative components. These include a youth political participation questionnaire and electoral participation data for Whitefish River First nation in federal, provincial and band elections.
Results demonstrate that the youth have a unique experience of politics defined by their identities, community and relationships. Their political behaviour is complex and nuanced. While they may not participate in conventional political activities, they are heavily involved in activities that are rooted in their culture and traditions. The community overall is democratically healthy and tends to participate widely in federal and provincial elections. Youth are for the most part satisfied with their lives in the community, but there are significant challenges due to the consequences of colonialism. Many of these implications affect their political behaviour. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Previous issue date: 2017-03-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis is inside of the emerging field of youth studies in Brazil and Latin America. It talks about the political theme and practices of young political-partisan militants form a working group within the Workers' Party (PT), in the city of São Paulo, between 2012 and 2013. Its research problem is geared towards the search for the characterization of youth participation in political parties at this time of contemporaneity and the questioning of political and party institutions. Based on a discussion that articulates Anthropology, Sociology and Politics, what is highlighted in the analysis of these practices are the values and the meanings of what is experienced in the political-partisan space and how the particular ways of seeing the world act in the political consciousness of this contemporary youth, which, at the moment, is part of the hegemonic political force in Brazil. The qualitative ethnographic perspective - based on participant observation, prolonged coexistence with the object of studies and immersion in the cultural universe investigated - is taken as a privileged methodological framework for field research. The theoretical framework of references is anchored in Gramsci (1999), Martín-Barbero (1978, 1998, 2004), Williams (1969, 1979, 1992, 2011) and in contemporary Brazilian and Latin American authors who have legitimacy in the debate about young and youth: Alvorado (2012, 2014), Borelli (2008, 2009, 2012), Vommaro, (2012, 2013, 2015) / Esta tese insere-se no emergente campo de estudos sobre as juventudes no Brasil e na América Latina.
