The Lived Experience of Zimbabwean Women Being Diagnosed and Living with HIV/AIDS: a Phenomenological Study

Thesis advisor: Rosanna DeMarco / The purpose of this study was to explore the Zimbabwean women's experiences of being diagnosed and living with HIV/AIDS on a daily basis. This phenomenological study used the van Manen (1984, 1997) method of phenomenological inquiry and approach to phenomenological analysis to uncover the women's experiences and meaning of being diagnosed and living with HIV/AIDS. Seventeen HIV positive women participating in a development of antiretroviral therapies (DART) clinical trial in Harare, Zimbabwe, were recruited through snowball sampling and by word of mouth were interviewed. The study revealed that women experienced the dread of living with suspicion prior to a confirmed HIV diagnosis, pain and suffering when diagnosed, renewal and rebirth from the effects of antiretroviral medications and DART clinical trial while simultaneously experiencing the burden of living with HIV/AIDS. With time the women came to terms with their HIV positive statuses, and used their experiences to help others. The themes living with suspicion of HIV/AIDS and sensing the engulfing anguish of HIV/AIDS were found to be the core essence of being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The themes knowing the restorative power of antiretroviral medications, the heavy burden of HIV, and finding meaning in being HIV positive were found to be the core essence of living with HIV/AIDS on a daily basis. The findings inform health care providers on the trauma and suffering of being diagnosed and living with HIV/AIDS, and the benefits of antiretroviral medications. Migrant women's access to public health care services in Makhado, Limpopo: a case of Zimbabwean women

Migrant women are often omitted within the migrant discourse/research, with that in mind, the research study brings to the fore migrant women's experiences when accessing public health care services within underdeveloped communities. The study explored Zimbabwean migrant women's experiences in accessing public health care services in Makhado, a small town based in Limpopo, South Africa which has only two public health care services namely, Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital and Louis Trichardt clinic. To conduct this study, ethical clearance was obtained in November 2018 from the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town. The qualitative research method was adopted in collecting the data. The study conducted in-depth interviews with five Zimbabwean migrant women who had made use of the two public health care services in Makhado. Field notes, diary entry, an impromptu focus group were used to collect the study data. The sample for the study was purposively selected. The study worked with a total of twelve participants, in-depth interviews with five Zimbabwean women, and a focus group with seven health care workers. The collected data was manually transcribed and was analyzed using the framework analysis. Main themes and sub-themes were extracted from the transcribed interview scripts. The study revealed that migrants accessing the two hospitals in Makhado faced challenges such as language barriers, discrimination, and adverse health personnel attitudes based on the patient's citizenship status. Furthermore, the challenges that nurses are faced within their workplace, which include lack of resources, absenteeism, long working hours and overcrowded public health care services within their workplace contributed towards their negative attitude in assisting patients. As a result, migrants bore the challenges faced by the nurses within the public health care services. Therefore, the migrants reverted to having other alternatives such as traditional healers, churches, connections with nurses working in the hospitals, private hospitals and over the counter medication. However, participants underscored that in order for betterment within the public health care services, the following measures ought to be implemented, these include the introduction of independent centres, an increase of mobile clinics, increased number of interpreters, better working environment for the health personnel within the public health care facilities and intensive education training of the health personnel around the awareness migrant issues when accessing public health care services. Foucault's (1980) theory on power and knowledge, played a significant role in understanding the operational systems of public health care services. It also assisted in understanding how public health care services function, to exclude and control migrant patients, through the introduction of fees and required documentation to access public health care services.

Intercultural communication between African-American and Zimbabwean women: focussing on identity and survival/liberation

African-American and Zimbabwean women live and do theology from different cultural and contextual worldviews, although they share the same skin colour. The narrative stories of three Zimbabwean and one African-American Christian women and how they share inter culturally the struggle of identity, identity-formation and survival/liberation while maintaining their cultural uniqueness form die basis of this research project. These shared experiences can offer significant contributions to the broader feminist liberation theology. The Christian faith has served as a shared source of sustenance, resilience, healing and renewal as well as a shared source for constructive and affirming identity-formation for Zimbabwean and African-American women. Consequently, building strong relationships that address contextual issues facing women of Africa and the Diaspora, as suggested by this research, offers significant opportunities for eliminating some of the barriers and boundaries that prevent Zimbabwean and African- American women from enjoying the quality of life that God meant for everyone. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. The utility of the Zimbabwean Domestic Violence Act : Christian and Muslim women's experiences

The study investigated Zimbabwean Christian and Muslim women who had experienced domestic violence with a view to finding out the extent to which these women used provisions of the Domestic Violence Act of 2006. The study was conducted in urban Masvingo and its surroundings. The methodology applied to the empirical investigation was qualitative and was informed by the phenomenological, feminist and pragmatic theoretical frameworks. Data was collected, by means of in-depth semi-structured interviews, from 30 participants, 22 Christian and 8 Muslim, who were selected using purposive sampling and snowball sampling techniques. In investigating the women’s experiences, some questions guided the study. These include: Where and to what extent does a select group of Christian and Muslim women who fall victim to domestic violence normally seek help? How do religious and cultural beliefs and practices influence the response to domestic violence by the abused as well as those to whom they report? To what extent do religious communities prevent selected victims of domestic violence from seeking legal assistance? Data was analysed by coding responses according to themes. The study revealed that the participants perceived domestic violence as having diverse causes and most of them saw their religion as crucial in addressing their plight. It emerged that a majority of the participants sought help from their religious communities as well as relatives and friends. Mixed responses emanated from these sources of help. The most common response, based largely on religious and cultural beliefs, was to encourage participants to avoid reporting to authorities. It also emerged that most of the participants were not willing to seek help from the police, courts or legal practitioners to seek redress because of the advice they received as well as their own internalised beliefs. Religious, social, and economic factors prevented most participants from appealing to provisions of the Domestic Violence Act.It was concluded that the Zimbabwean Domestic Violence Act had limited usefulness for participants because of religious, social and economic factors. It was recommended that if relevant stakeholders could jointly work together, domestic violence would be alleviated.
