Maria do Socorro de Caldas Pinto 29 August 2008 (has links)
Nestes pontos foi determinado a bobertura do solo, contadas as plantas vivas que se encontravam dentro da moldura, em seguida separadas por espÃcie e identificadas botanicamente / Floristic survey was conducted of the component herbaceus in five ecological sites in the municipalities of Taua and Quixelo, Ceara, to ascertain the species of higher occurrence and a potential forage through the dete rmination of chemical bromatol ogic and fractions that make up the nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates a nd of estimate total digestible nutrients (TDN). In area of about 1ha for each site, were sampled 20 points in site s I, II, IV and V and 10 points in the III using a rectangular frame w ith dimension of 1.45 x 0.70 m. In these points was determined to coverege the soil, counted li ve plants which were within the frame, then separated by species an d identified botany. The floristic para meters the stratum herbaceous evaluated were: number of families, genera, sp ecies and individuals, frequency of families and species, percentage of the aggregate inde x IGA, diversity estimated by index of Shannon- Wiener (H '), dominance by Simpson ( C), samp le sufficiency, absolute density (AD) and relative density (RD). Were determined the le vels dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ash (MM), organic matter (OM), stratum ether (EE) , neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF). The data on chemical-bromatologic composition were submitted to descriptive and multivariate analysis, with gr ouping of areas two step clustering using the SAS statistical package. It was determined the fraction A of the nitrogen compounds, B1 fraction, fraction B3, fraction C and B2 frac tion determined by the difference between the total nitrogen and the fractions A, B1, B3 and C. The carbohydrates tota l, C fraction, fraction B2 and the fractions of carbohydrates with high rates of degradation rumen (A+B1). We used the equations of the NRC (2001) for prediction of the energy value and calculate the ED, EM P and EL L . The flora herbaceous ecological in the fi ve sites was represented by 22 families, 47 genera and 54 species, totali ng 16.679 individuals. The numb er of parcels was enough to estimate the reality of floristic composition, as evidenced by the no entry of new species in ecological sites. The diversity for sites I, II, III, IV and V was 0.98, 0.92, 0.94, 0.94 and 0.97 nats/individuals for the index of Shannon-Wi ener (H ') and of 0.87, 0.97, 0.95, 0.85 and 0.86 nats/individuals for the index of dominance by Simpson (C), thus showing, low floristic diversity. The pattern of dist ribution was uniform for the si tes II, III, IV and V with xvi percentages of 88, 100, 96.55 and 1 00%, respectively. The ecological site I with 90.63% of the plant community has tended to group together . For the chemical composition of the result of clustering analysis allowed the formation of three distinct groups: sites I and IV (in the municipalities of Quixelo and Ta ua); sites II and III (Quixelo) and ecological site V (Taua). The ordination of five ecological sites based on the correlation of levels DM, MM, EE, CP, NDF and ADF. There was significant effect (P <0.01) for all variables within each ecological site. There was wide variation in chemical composition, with levels ranging from DM 5 to 85% , CP 6 to 22% , EE 2.4 to 12% , NDF from 36 to 90%, FDA from 22.5 to 49 , 5% for MM and more than 40% of the species showed an average of 10% in MS. For fraction A (non-protein nitrogen - NNP) of nitrogen compounds were obt ained values of 56.66% to 77.46% - Waltheria indica L. for the Macroptilium lathyroides (L) Urb. Aeschynomene rudis Benth and Stylosanthes humilis Kunth. presented, respectively, over fraction of B1 (14.13 and 19.41%) compared with other avaluated species. For the B2 fraction values of ranged from 34.06 and 32.21% for Paspalum conspersum Schrad and Waltheria indica L. respectively. The B3 fraction ranged from 0.62 to 25.70%, Waltheria indica L and Ipomoeaea hederifolia L, respectively. The C fraction of nitrogen was lower for the cenchrus equinatus (0.75%), followed by Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O' Donell (1.13 %). In fractionation of carbohydrates, it was observed that th e fraction C ranged 13.49 to 52.90% for Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O' Donell and Wissadula subpeltata (Kuntze) R. E. Fr, respectively. For Eragrostis pilosa (L.) P. Beauv and Senna obtusifolia (l.) H. S. Irwin & Barneby, values for the fraction A+B1, were 0.74 to 52.79%. The Macroptilium lathyroides (L) Urb., Senna obtusifolia (l.) H. S. Irwin & Barneby, Ipomoeaea hederifolia L., and Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O' Donell were 82.41, 84.95, 84.07 and 86.50% of their carbohydrates in the form of fraction A+B1+B2. The energy values es timated to TDN, DE, ELL and EMP, it was observed for the Ipomoea grandifolia (Dammer) O' Donell 78.96%, 3.45, 3.08 and 1.94 Mcal/kg, respectively Macroptilium lathyroides (L) Urb 69.00%; 2.78, 2.37, 1.47 Mcal/kg, Senna obtusifolia (L.) H. S. Irwin & Barne by 67.86%, 2.94, 2.53 and 1.59 Mcal/kg, respectively, Aeschynomene rudis Benth. 65.71%, 2.94, 2.53 resp ectively and 1.59 Mcal/kg and Stylosanthes humilis Kunth. 64.82%, 2.90, 2.49 and 1.56 Mcal /kg showed higher values for other pecies. The soil covering by biomass the herbaceous stratum of the sites ecological shows wide variation. The families most fre quently in ecological sites evaluated are Commelinaceae, Convolvulaceae, Euforbiaceae, Leguminoseae, Malvaceae, PortulacÃcea, Poaceae and Rubiaceae . The environments studied have lo w floristic diversity. There was a uniform predominance of distribution of species in four of the sites surveyed, where only one of five sites ecological species were tendi ng to group. Most of the analyzed species, with relationship to the bromatologyc-composition, has potential for the use as forage. The conservation of the spare materi al during the rainy period can supply the protein deficiency and available fiber and to promote the mainte nance of the pattern of fermentation of the rumen, improving performance of ruminant ones in the period of forage shortage. The fractionation of carbohydrates and protein are analysis simple, not expensive and must be carried out in all feed for ruminants. The use of equations of the NRC (2001) to predict the energy values of foods was appropr iate for the conditions of this research, there is a need for validation for these species of caatinga

Parboiled rice whole bran feeding japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) stages of growth and production / Farelo integral de arroz parboilizado na alimentaÃÃo de codornas japonesas (Coturnix coturnix japonica) nas fases de crescimento e produÃÃo.

Ivan Bezerra Quevedo Filho 30 July 2012 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / This study aimed to evaluate the inclusion of parboiled rice bran (PRWB) in diets of Japanese quail in the growing and production. In the first experiment, we used 324 Japanese quails with seven days of age, distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and six replications of nine birds. Treatments consisted of six diets isonutritives, being a control diet without PRWB and the other containing 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% of PRWB. The diets were offered ad libitum within 7 to 42 days and at the end of the growth phase the birds were transferred to the production hall being fed the same ration posture for 63 days. In the growth phase, the inclusion of PRWB above 5% linearly reduced digestibility of dry matter and gross energy of the feed, and from 14.27% in nitrogen digestibility, having, however, a linear increase in metabolizing energy. Feed intake, weight gain and final weight reduced without changing the feed conversion and body composition. During production, the addition of PRWB in the diet increased the growth of age at first egg production without influence (p <0.05) age to reach 50% yield, laying percentage, feed intake, weight and egg mass and feed conversion. Although there was some reduction of parameters when the PRWB increased above 5%, there was no deterioration in performance of birds fed different levels of PRWB in relation to the control group. Furthermore, the use of up to 25% PRWB provided the best economic feasibility. In the second experiment, a total of 448 quails at 17 weeks of age were randomly allotted in a completely randomized design with seven treatments and eight replicates of eight birds. We tested a control diet (without PRWB) and six diets containing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% PRWB. Rising levels of PRWB not influence the digestibility of nutrients, harnessing the energy of the diets, consumption, production, weight, and egg mass indices and economic feasibility. As for the quality of the eggs, we observed a linear decrease in the percentage of egg specific gravity and yolk color, with increasing inclusion of PRWB, while the percentage of yolk, albumen and Haugh units were not affected significantly. Whereas the utilization of nutrients in the ration and the performance of birds fed 30% inclusion of PRWB was not significantly lower than that obtained for the control group, while the quality of the shell, although they differ significantly from the results obtained with control diet are - within the average values reported. Thus, we can recommend the inclusion of parboiled rice bran in diets for Japanese quail at levels up to 25% in the growth phase and 30% in the production phase.

Requerimentos nutricionais de cordeiros Santa InÃs com peso corporal de 14 A 28 kg / Nutritional requirements of Santa Ines lambs with a body weight of 14 28 kg

Alessandra Pinto de Oliveira 30 July 2012 (has links)
FundaÃÃo de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Cearà / The objective of this study was to determine the body composition, the net energy and protein requirements for maintenance and weight gain, the efficiency of utilization of metabolizable energy for maintenance and weight gain and the dietary requirements of total digestible nutrients (TDN) and metabolizable protein (MP) of Santa Ines lambs, fed diets containing different levels of metabolizable energy (ME). We also evaluated the Small Ruminant Nutrition System (SRNS) model to predict the dry matter intake (DMI) and the average daily gain (ADG) of Santa Ines lambs. Were used 35 lambs, non-castrated, with initial body weight (BW) averaging 14.77 1.26 kg and about two months of age. For determination of body composition, in accordance with the methodology of comparative slaughter, at the beginning of the experiment, five animals were slaughtered to serve as reference for the estimates of empty body weight (EBW) and initial body composition of the 30 remaining animals, which were distributed in randomized block design with five treatments and six replications. The treatments consisted of diets containing increasing levels of ME (1.13; 1.40; 1.73; 2.22 and 2.60 Mcal/kg DM). When the animals of one of the treatments reached BW average of 28 kg, all the 30 animals were slaughtered. The body content of protein decreased from 218.13 to 183.96 g/kg EBW, while fat and energy increased from 80.70 to 157.49 g/kg EBW and 1.98 to 2.49 Mcal/kg EBW, respectively, with the increase in the BW of the animals from 15 to 30 kg. The net energy requirement for maintenance was 51.93 kcal/kg EBW0.75/day. The net protein requirement for maintenance was 1.34 g/kg BW0.75/day. The demand of net energy for weight gain (NEg) increased with the increase in the BW and in the ADG of the animals. The demand of net protein for weight gain (NPg) decreased with the increase in the BW and increased with ADG of the animals. The efficiency of utilization of metabolizable energy for maintenance (km) was 66%. The average value of efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for weight gain (kf) was 48%. The dietary requirements of TDN and MP increased with the increase in the BW and in the ADG of the animals. The model SRNS underestimated the DMI and ADG of the animals in 6.2% and 24.6%, respectively. The fat and energy content in the empty body, as well as the requirement of NEg increase, while the protein content for kg of EBW and the NPg requirement decrease with the increase in the BW of the animals. The nutritional requirements of Santa Ines lambs, in general, are lower than those suggested by international systems evaluation of food and nutrient requirements of small ruminants. The model SRNS can be used to predict the DMI of Santa Ines lambs, however, for variable ADG, more studies are needed, since the model underestimated the response of the animals of this study in 24.6%.

Abelhas polinizadoras da castanheira-do-brasil (Bertholletia excelsa) cultivada na AmazÃnia central: papel do nÃctar e do entorno do plantio na polinizaÃÃo da cultura / Pollinating bees of the Brazil nut tree ( Bertholletia excelsa) grown in central Amazonia : role of nectar and the surrounding planting the crop pollination

Marcelo Casimiro Cavalcante 22 February 2013 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / The low productivity observed in commercial crops of Brazil nut trees (Bertholletia excelsa) may be associated with the management of cropping systems, interfering decisively in diversity, richness and abundance of pollinating bees and foraging behavior. However, in cultures of Brazil nut, so little is known about the effect of the landscape in the community of bees flowers visitors and the interactions between the resources offered by the plant and their interaction with their pollinators. Thus, this project aims to understand the role of nectar in pollination of Brazil nut trees and study the effect of the surrounding planting systems on the visitation of potential pollinators to Bertholletia excelsa under cultivation in central Amazonia rain forest. The experiment was conducted between the months of October to December 2009 and 2010 in an area of 3600ha of farming the Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa), belonging to Agricultural AruanÃ, located in Itacoatiara, Amazonas state. The results showed that the flowers of B. excelsa already proffer nectar from anthesis (14.48 μl, 38.74% and 6.56 mg of sugar), with a pattern of secretion volume and the amount of sugar continued and increasing until 15:30 h and 13:30 h, respectively, increasing rates of 2.10 / hour and 0.69 mg / hour. After these times, for each variable, there was a reduction in the rate of secretion, featuring early resorption process. In contrast, the concentration of solute concentration was decreasing after 7:30 h while maintaining similar values (p> 0.01) throughout the morning and afternoon superior to, coincident with the peak activity of the bees. Despite the pattern of nectar secretion show higher values of volume and amount of sugar in the afternoon, under natural conditions of visitation of the study area almost all the nectar was collected in the morning yet, due to the high activity of visitors influenced by conditions temperature. All flower visitors sampled except Megachile sp., Have characteristics of size glossa meets morphological structure of flowers, providing success in collecting nectar and potentially in the pollination process of chestnut. The area with a population capoeira remained abundant and richer than capoeira without (p <0.05), showing the importance of this natural vegetation as a repository for maintaining species of pollinating bees inside the planting of chestnut. The species Xylocopa frontalis and Eufriesea flaviventris stood out as the most abundant, the first being found in greater quantity in cultivation with poultry (88% of total bees) and the second in the area without poultry (64%). However, the distance from the trees to the fragments of native vegetation did not affect the abundance and diversity of bees floral visitors (p> 0.05), both in the environment and in poultry without the roost, despite having been checked several populations in this environment. Thus, we conclude that there seems to be a synchronism between the pattern of nectar secretion and activity of floral visitors and potential pollinators, increasing the chances of reproductive success by bee-plant interactions. We can also conclude that the system of land management that keeps tracks of secondary vegetation "capoeira" inside the plant maintains a greater richness and abundance of pollinating bees, thereby increasing pollination and yield of the crop.

FÃtima Revia Granja Lima 17 September 2010 (has links)
nÃo hà / Three experiments were carried out aiming to evaluate the influence of different factors on parameter of post-thawing semen motility and pregnancy index of rams. The first one showed the influence of extender type (skim milk, HEPES and TRIS), freezing temperature (-79oC, -90oC and -120oC) and final concentration of sperm (600 x 106, 800 x 106 and 1000 x 106 sperm per mL) on semen motility parameters of Santa Ines rams. The second one experiment evaluated the influence of egg yolk types (chicken and quail) and its percentage (10% and 20%) on the characteristics of motility of frozen semen of rams. The last one experiment evaluated the effect of two artificial insemination techniques (cervical and laparoscopic) on pregnancy rate of ewes of two farms. Pregnancy rate were compared within and between farms. Body condition score and parturity order influence on pregnancy rate was also analyzed. The results of experiment 1 showed that using milk extender, motility and speed of sperm were different (P<0.05 on -79ÂC temperature) when compared to other temperatures. Considering HEPES extender, the temperature of -90ÂC was lower compared to the others. Using TRIS extender, there was no difference between freezing temperatures, but the motility was higher when compared to the other extenders, at all temperatures evaluated. Considering sperm percentage, progressive motility and fast speed as variables, the concentration of 600 x 106sperm per mL proved to be higher (P<0.05) than 800 x 106 sperm per mL. Considering the mean velocity of rapid sperm trajectory(VAPR), the extender skim milk used at a temperature of -79ÂC presented a lower percentage when compared to other temperatures. However, TRIS extender was higher (P>0.05) when compare to the others. No difference was detected (P>0.05) between concentrations considering the other extenders. In experiment 2, the percentage of motile sperm was different (P<0.05) using TRIS extender (10% of chicken egg yolk). The variables progressive motility and rapid motility of spermatozoa presented the best rates, using TRIS (10% of chicken egg yolk) and did not differ (P>0.05) from TRIS (10% of quail egg yolk). It was observed a higher percentage (P<0.05) of sperm with head defects in the treatments with the highest percentage of egg yolk (20%), independently of the yolk type used. There was no statistical difference (P>0.05) in other morphological sperm changes. In experiment 3, artificial insemination type influenced on pregnancy rate, even with frozen semen, showing superior results (P<0.05) using laparoscopic via, on both farms. There was no effect (P>0.05) of parturity order on insemination techniques, on both farms. However, the body condition score (ECC) influenced the insemination using cervical via, on farm 1. Therefore, it was concluded that TRIS extender, at a freezing temperature of -79ÂC and final concentration of 600 x 106 sperm per mL, proved to be the freezing protocol more suitable for Santa Ines rams semen, using the TK 3000 equipment. The percentage of 10% of chicken egg yolk was the best to preserve sperm motility parameters, however the egg yolk of quail showed up as an alternative to be added to the semen extender. Despite the in vitro evaluation of frozen semen in this experiment have been satisfactory, it was not enough to increase the pregnancy rates of inseminated females. It was also concluded that laparoscopy technique is the most indicated when frozen semen is used, in ovine species.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, sheep farming in the State of Paraná has stood out in the national production scenario. The general aim of this thesis was to carry out an economic and organizational analysis of meat sheep production systems in the State of Paraná; for such, five studies were performed. The first study aimed to identify and characterize representative meat sheep production system profiles of five mesoregions in the State of Paraná during the 2015 production cycle. With the support of FAEP - Federação da Agricultura do Estado do Paraná (Agriculture Federation of the State of Paraná), the sample was defined and selected through the rapid appraisal methodology, which was applied at sheep farmer mobility meetings in five selected mesoregions of the State, upon which occasion sheep production and marketing associations, which together account for 65.22% of the sheep population in the State, were identified. Data were collected by means of a semi-structured questionnaire applied during visits to farms, addressing the following aspects: (i) farm, farm owner and labor profiles; (ii) flock characteristics; (iii) production and feeding systems; (iv) facilities; (v) reproductive and sanitary management; (vi) challenges and future prospects. The results obtained identified production system heterogeneity and difficulties in defining standards for the activity development, in addition to the need for zootechnical indicator improvement and farm managerial control. The second study aimed to identify and quantify costs and revenues of the representative sheep production systems characterized in the first study. Data regarding the production structure, zootechnical records, management activities and cash flow referring to the 2015 production cycle were collected. Production costs were calculated by using the methodology recommended by the Institute of Agricultural Economics of the State of São Paulo. The result costs showed that: animal feed was the most impacting component on variable costs; the use of available food resources on the farm, especially in integrated crop-livestock systems, contributed to cost reduction; mineral supplementation and sanitation expenses had greater participation in the production costs of smaller scale production systems; the use of pre-existing facilities contributed to the reduction of fixed assets and fixed costs; the shared use of inputs promoted cost dilution which, together with the production scale and activity diversification, were decisive to obtain positive balances. As for revenues, it was observed that, even when the production focus is lamb meat, other system revenues were important and played a decisive role in obtaining positive balances, such as: retention in the flock of animals born in the production cycle under analysis, the sale of animals to other farmers and the sale of culled animals. The third study aimed to establish typology so as to describe and characterize the representative farms under analysis based on technical and economic indicators. The principal component analysis (PCA) method was used to verify the relationship between different variables that characterized the farms. Variables used to determine typology were: number of matrices in the flock (V1); revenue-generating product total cost per kg (V2); sheep feeding costs (V3), labor costs (V4); facility and equipment depreciation costs (V5), and production cycle economic result gross margin (V6). The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkim test (KMO) showed a result of 0.779, and the Bartlett sphericity test was significant (P <0.001). The two major components accounted for 73.98% of the variance. Cluster analysis (CA) was performed from the generated components, resulting in three distinct groups: one including nine, another eight and the third seven farms. The results classified farms into groups with similar characteristics, such as production scale, integration with agricultural activities, cooperative organizational structure and zootechnical and managerial control initiative appreciation, reproductive efficiency and continuous technical assistance availability. Typology classification allowed the reduction of diversity between representative farms in three of the groups, providing better knowledge of meat sheep production in the State of Paraná. The fourth study aimed to identify, describe and analyze the performance of agricultural cooperatives as strategic agents for the development of meat sheep production in the State of Paraná. A qualitative exploratory research was carried out in the four cooperatives acting in the sheep meat production chain in the State of Paraná in 2016. Cooperative managers and specialists in the productive chain in their respective coverage areas were interviewed. In the result description, it was possible to classify these cooperatives into two groups: those that develop various agribusiness activities and those that operate exclusively with sheep and goat farming. The results obtained showed that cooperatives are a valuable tool to strengthen sheep production in the State of Paraná, that there is no single technological standard for sheep production, and that cooperatives that active in other agribusiness branches, with sheep farming being just another activity in their portfolios, seem to obtain better results in the activity, having higher expansion expectations and seeking strategies to overcome their main challenges, especially those related to animal slaughter and meat and meat product processing. On the other hand, cooperatives that operate exclusively in the sheep industry expect greater intervention and government support, especially with reference to resource transfer and technical assistance. The fifth study aimed to estimate the effects of the insertion of sheep farming into agricultural production systems in the State of Paraná for the optimization of available resources and the maximization of economic results through the linear programming technique. Two operating profit maximization models were tested which simulated crop-livestock integration on a representative farm, assuming the existence of a sheep flock that included 250 matrices and an available agricultural area of 100 hectares within a five-year production horizon. The models were processed by means of the CPLEX solver using the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) software. In the scenario simulation, the results which showed highest operating profits pointed to the production of animal feed from the annual winter crops, thus demonstrating the importance of integration processes to maximize agricultural production economic results in the State of Paraná. By doing more comprehensive, in-depth studies on the characterization of sheep production systems, together with the economic and organizational analysis of these systems, the research evidenced the ability of Paraná to produce differentiated sheep meat in terms of quality and brand consolidation, as well as the growth potential of the activity, in view of the strategic location of the State for the processing and distribution of the product to major consumer centers in Brazil, as well as the organizational structure and coordination of this productive chain. Replacement jackdaws are one of the production bottlenecks, and are essential to stock productivity. The use of inadequate nutritional management may impair growth, development and reproductive efficiency. During the estrous cycle this animal can vary its food consumption patterns by voluntarily restricting feed intake, weight gain, tissue deposition patterns and consequently nutritional requirements. However, there are no studies in the literature that evaluate the performance and nutritional requirements of pubescent gilts at each stage of their estrous cycle. An important aid tool for evaluation and adjustment in animal production is mathematical modeling. The Inraporc® program uses linear and non-linear models to estimate performance and nutritional requirements for growing pigs and sows in breeding conditions under different production conditions based on observed data. The objective of this work was to verify the occurrence of compensatory gain and to evaluate the performance, protein deposition and amino acid and metabolizable energy requirements of pubertal gilts in the respective phases of the estrous cycle with the aid of InraPorc®. It was found that pubertal gilts presented compensatory gain after estrus, resulting in higher protein deposition, amino acid requirements and metabolizable energy after this phase of the estrous cycle. The families most fre quently in ecological sites evaluated are Commelinaceae, Convolvulaceae, Euforbiaceae, Leguminoseae, Malvaceae, Portulacácea, Poaceae and Rubiaceae . Aiming at the good productive performance of broilers, the physical shape of the diets and a granulometry of the ingredients used are widely studied by researchers and nutritionists of the sector. The objective of this study was to evaluate the different physical forms of the diet with four soybean meal (SM) granulometry, on the productive performance, carcass yields and digestibility of the different fractions of the diets. In the first experiment, 720 male Cobb 500® cutting chicks were used, distributed in a completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 9 replicates of 20 animals each housed in the period from 1 to 42 days of age. The treatments consisted of diets with four granulometry of SM (625, 775, 1053 and 1406 ?m). In the initial phase, birds fed intermediate particle sizes presented the best results for weight gain (WG) and feed conversion (FC) (P <0.05). In the growth phase the coarser granulometry resulted in better results for WG and FC (P <0.05). In the total period of 1-42 days of age the broilers fed the particle size of 1406 ?m showed a trend towards higher WG (P = 0.06) and lower FC (P <0.05). For chest yield there was a linear increase (P <0.05) for birds fed with coarser SM particles. The diets with the finest and coarsest SM particles presented the same behavior regarding the digestibility of crude protein and digestible ileal energy, presenting a quadratic effect (P <0.05). In the second experiment, 1440 male Cobb 500 broiler chicks housed in the 1 to 35 days age group were used. The design was completely randomized, in a 2x4 factorial arrangement (two physical forms x four SM granulometry) with 9 replications, with 20 animals each. The physical forms were: mash and pellet, and in the initial phase pellet diets were crush. The granulometry was the same as in the 1st experiment. There was interaction between the physical forms of the diet x granulometries of SM. In the period of 1-7 days of age, the diet that presented the lowest WG and higher FC was the treatment with mash with particle size of 1406?m (P <0.05). In the periods 1-21 and 1-35 days of age, the pelleted ration with 1406?m granulometry presented the highest WG (P <0.05). It can be concluded that the coarser granulometry of SM and pelleted rations tend to promote the best results for the zootechnical parameters evaluated. One of the most profitable ways to market this resource is the "soft-shell crab". Soft-shell crabs are considered a gastronomic delicacy and sold at high prices in the international market. Like most arthropods, the crab have an exoskeleton that, when rigid, makes it impossible to grow, requiring periodic changes, in a process known as the "moult cycle". Immediately after molting, the animal's exoskeleton is heavily hydrated and not calcified, giving it a smooth and soft consistency. It is at this stage of the seedling cycle that the crab is known as "soft-shell crab". The exoskeleton stiffening process occurs mainly by the deposition of CaCO3 on the protein matrix of the new exoskeleton, providing a rapid stiffening to the fragile exoskeleton, again giving rigidity and mechanical protection to the animal. Although this complete stiffening only takes place about two days after the molt, the organisms remain only 3 hours, on average, in the consistencies of high commercial value ("mole" and "leather") before assuming a consistency classified as "paper", and then "hard" again. Commercial-scale breeding operations of soft-shell crab require high labor costs, since stocked animals need to be continuously checked (every four hours at least), in relation to their moulting stage and to the stage of exoskeleton stiffening. The main objective of the present study was analyze the current state of the art of the production and commercialization of soft-shell crab in the world, and to test a method to increase the time of permanence of the crab in consistencies of high commercial value. This study was divided into two chapters. The first chapter, entitled "Global status of production and commercialization of soft-shell crabs" is a literature review, which pointed out that the worldwide commercialization of this product is carried out mainly by the Internet, by companies certified in relation to the requirements of Management of food safety. In addition, it was verified that this market handles more than US $ 940 million annually. One of the biggest challenges for crab producers is obtaining the raw material, mainly from direct capture in nature. The intense exploitation and the environmental and climatic changes have been provoking continuous reductions on the main commercial crabs stocks. One way to overcome this problem would be to close the production cycle under controlled environmental conditions (aquaculture). However, the complete production cycle is still restricted to a few species, most notably those of the genus Scylla, grown mainly in Southeast Asia. Another way to guarantee the supply of soft-shell crabs in the market involves increasing the efficiency and productivity of existing enterprises and reducing losses and waste. This could be achieved by increasing the period in which the animals remain soft. The second chapter, entitled "Is it possible to keep the crab exoskeleton, Callinectes ornatus, mole for several days?", three experiments were carried out with the objective of evaluate the prolongation of the Callinectes ornatus exoskeleton time in the consistencies valued by the market (mole and leather). Such prolongation was induced by changes in the chemical characteristics of the water caused by the animals kept in captivity. A direct effect of pH (<7.3) and total ammonia concentration (> 6.0 mg / L) on the exoskeleton stiffening delay was observed. Under these conditions, the tested animals remained soft for 2.5 to 8 days, that is, at least for a time more than 20 times higher than is usually observed under commercial conditions. The methodology used here presents a high potential to be adapted to commercial ventures producing soft-shell crab. In this case, if the results obtained can be replicated on a comercial scale, this will lead to a drastic reduction in workload and operational costs, increasing the productivity and efficiency of these enterprises for the production and marketing of soft-shell crab.
