Oral strategies for conflict expression and articulation of criticism in Zulu social discourse.Turner, Noleen Sheila. January 2003 (has links)
This study examines the oral strategies employed by Zulu speaking people in the expression of conflict and criticism in their social discourse. These oral discourses, viz. izibongo and naming practices, are analysed to ascertain the socially acceptable ways in which Zulus articulate their frustrations and discontent in various social settings. These are commonly used in rural communities, but they also echo in urban social settings. Hostility and ill-feelings are thus channelled through the sanctioned form of these various oral expressions either as a means of merely airing one's dissatisfaction or as a means of seeking personal redress. The study also reveals that these particular forms of oral
expression with critical content, do not exist for their own intrinsic value simply to artfully describe a particular individual. They are composed primarily to serve a particular social function of conflict articulation and expression in non-conflictual ways. The function of these oral forms is that of a "socio-cultural archive" (Conolly 2001), which is vested in the memory of those who can express in performance, their renditions of personal and group identity. The aesthetic beauty of these forms must be regarded as a secondary function and a direct
by-product of the primary function, which is personal identity expressed in a way which ensures that issues which could cause conflict are highlighted so as to diminish their conflictual potential. The reason for this is that in order to fulfill the first function, which is conflict reduction,

Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This assignment examines isiZulu texts within the framework of text-linguistic theories by
various scholars and researchers, which illustrate linguistic elements that can be incorporated
into the teaching methodology of writing. Appropriately applied, these elements can develop
learners' analytical skills as advanced in Curriculum 2005 in the languages learning area.
A text-linguistic analysis of isiZulu newspaper texts on current affairs from different editions
of Ilanga newspaper has been performed. This analysis reveals that text construction reflects
generic factors such as the economic and social status of the community, its culture, which
influence the communicative purpose. An attempt is made to investigate in detail the
parameters of the ethnography of writing as advanced by Grabe and Kaplan (1996). These
parameters are: who, rites, what, to whom, for what purpose, why, when and how. It is argued
that once the learner has mastered the parameters for text construction and analysis, he/she
will be better equipped to achieve the learning outcomes specified for writing of Curriculum
2005. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie ondersoek tekste in isiZulu binne die raamwerk van die tekslinguistiese teorieë
van verskillende navorsers wat illustreer hoe tekslinguistiese elemente en eienskappe ingesluit
kan word in die onderrigmetodologie van skryfvaardigheid. Indien hierdie onderrigmetodologie
doeltreffend toegepas word, kan die bemeestering van hierdie elemente leerders
se analitiese vaardighede ontwikkel, soos wat bepaal word in die leerarea vir tale van
Kurrikulum 2005.
'n Tekslinguistiese analise van koerantartikels oor huidige gebeurtenisse vanuit verskillende
uitgawes van die Ilanga koerant is uitgevoer in hierdie studie. Hierdie analises het aangetoon
dat tekskonstruksie van isiZulu bepaalde generiese faktore reflekteer, soos die ekonomiese en
sosiale status van 'n gemeenskap, wat weer die skrywer se kommunikatiewe doelstelling
beïnvloed. Die studie poog om 'n in-diepte analise te maak van die parameters van die
etnografie van skryf soos voorgestaan deur Grabe en Kaplan ten opsigte van die isiZulu
tekste. Hierdie parameters word soos volg gestel: Wie skryf wat, aan wie, vir watter doel,
hoekom, wanneer en hoe. Dit word geargumenteer dat as leerders van isiZulu eers die
parameters vir tekskonstruksie bemeester het, sal hy/sy beter in staat wees om die

In-depth analysis of genre-texts of political articles in newspapers. / In-depth analysis of genre-texts of political articles in newspapers. / Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to do an in-depth analysis of genre-texts of political articles in
newspapers. The genre theoretical approach is employed as framework for analysing the
linguistic, rhetorical and discourse properties of isiZulu texts, giving a demonstration of a
more general theory of genre analysis in writing, advanced by different writers. The genrebased
approach to literacy and language teachingwas explored. A general overview was
given of genre in folklore, genre in linguistics, genre in rhetoric and general description of
genres was provided.
The parameters of writing, that is the "who writes, what, to whom, where, when, why and
how", were utilised in each text under investigation. These parameters were used to
assess the communicative writing competence of the author of each text. Aspects of the
text analysis such as information structuring, topic structuring, coherence and cohesion,
cognitive move structure and structural description have been employed.
This study presents the findings of the analysis of the lIanga newspaper texts by
describing the critical analysis of textlinguistic aspects through the examination of genre
text and outcomes-based language teaching in Curriculum 2005. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie is om 'n in-diepte analise te maak van genre tekste van
koerantartikels in isiZulu wat handeloor politieke aangeleenthede. Die genre-teoretiese
benadering is gebruik as raamwerk vir die analise van die taalkundige, retoriese en
diskoerseienskappe van isiZulu tekste, en te demonstreer hoe, vir die doeleindes van
teksanalise, 'n meer algemene teorie van genre analise in skryfwerk gebruik kan word. Die
genre-benadering tot geletterdheid en taalonderrig is eerstens ondersoek. 'n Algemene
oorsig is gegee van genre in folklore, genre in die taalkunde, genre in retoriek en 'n
beskrywing van die kenmerke van genres is gedoen.
Die parameters van skryf, naamlik wie skryf wat aan wie, waar, waarom, en hoe, is gebruik
om elke koerantartikel te ondersoek. Hierdie parameters is aangewend om die
kommunikatiewe skryfvaardigheid van die skrywer van elke teks te assesseer. Aspekte
van teksanalise, naamlik inligtingstrukturering, onderwerpstrukturering, koherensie en
kohesie, kognitiewe skuifstruktuur en strukturele beskrywing is aangewend in die analise
van die tekste.
Die studie bied die bevindinge van die analise van die lIanga koerantartikels in isiZulu deur
die kritiese analise te beskryf van tekslinguistiese aspekte met verwysing na genre-tekste
en uitkoms-gebaseerde taalonderrig in Kurrikulum 2005.

Thesis (MA (African Languages))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / This study invesitgates a selection of hard news articles in isiZulu that were published in the newspaper Ilanga within the framework of genre theory. The study invokes in particular the orbital structure approach to the organisation of the structure of hard news articles advanced by White (1997) in analysing the isiZulu articles. Hard news reports are typically associated with eruptive violence, reversals of fortune and socially significant breaches of the moral order. Hard news reports are distinguished in terms of two types, namely those reports which are primarily grounded in a material event such as an accident, natural disaster, riot, or terrorist attack, and those reports grounded in a communicative event such as a speech, interview, or press release. The research in this study presents an analysis of four articles in isiZulu of each of these two types. The analysis of the isiZulu articles presents support for White’s view that both types of hard news reports exhibit the same generic structure, a mode of textual organisation unique to mass media which gives hard news its textual distinctiveness. Both types hard news reports achieve their informational and rhetorical objectives through a non-linear, orbital structure in which dependent ‘satelites’ elaborate, explain, contextualize and appraise a textually dominant nucleus.
