Slakthusområdet : "att bevara eller inte bevara"

Hallengren, Ida, Forssblad, Julia January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the significance of cultural heritage and the importance of preserving such places. In addition, the study also examines how the different actors involved are working to preserve cultural heritage while developing an urban neighborhood. These questions were answered through a case study of the area Slakthusområdet in Stockholm, Sweden. Three representatives from the City of Stockholm and two representatives from two different construction companies were interviewed. The interviewed actors found that preservation can often become an issue where economic sustainability and ecological sustainability are not compatible. Due to this, an assessment was made as to whether or not it was worth preserving the buildings. The study also shows that for a building to be worth preserving, it must be adaptable to future needs. While there is a strength in the historic site being able to attract certain businesses, the building must be able to be used for the desired purpose. Furthermore, there are also difficulties in combining a residential neighborhood with a vibrant community since problems such as noise can arise. Moreover, when industrial areas are transformed, it almost always results in some form of gentrification.

An Acute Sense of Place: The Songs of Norman Blake

Jutz, Thomas 01 December 2022 (has links)
American flat-picking guitarist, singer and songwriter Norman Blake holds legendary status among guitar players, bluegrass, and folk musicians. The aim of this research is to analyze the interaction of sense of place in Norman Blake’s songwriting. This research will explore the techniques Blake uses to create that acute sense of place. Elements of literary criticism, cultural geography, ethnomusicology, and sense of place studies, as well as historical background information on Northern Alabama and North Georgia will be employed to show how this particular region of Southeastern Appalachia has informed Blake’s songwriting. The research questions that I aim to answer are how a sense of place has influenced Norman Blake’s songwriting, how his writing has influenced other songwriters in the field of 20th century folk music, bluegrass, Americana, and country music, and what songwriting techniques Blake has employed to create an acute sense of place.

Fairgrounds or Community: A Cabin Owners' Perception of Place

Nause, Christopher Derek 11 May 2013 (has links)
This case study focused on the Neshoba County Fair, located outside of Philadelphia, Mississippi, to investigate the role of design elements that foster a sense of community within the built environment. The fairground is unique because it exhibits two developed areas that portray different approaches to design: one that is sensitive to the landscape and one that is less respectful of original development practices. This research utilized a mailed survey, distributed to cabin owners within the fairground boundary. The survey examined whether cabin owners of the fair relate the sense of community with the elements in their built environment, as well as their perceptions of the fairgrounds. The results of this research indicate that cabin owners would prefer to be close to the areas of activity. Findings further indicate that how the individual elements are integrated into the built environment is what promotes sense of community, not the elements themselves.
