Performance Analysis and Applications of Optimal Linear Smoothing PredictionChen, Chia-Wei 07 September 2010 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the design and analysis of an optimal filter that is capable of making one-step-ahead prediction of a bandlimited signal while attenuating unwanted noise. First, the filter optimization based on the least mean-square-error criterion is presented. Then, an exact expression for the achievable minimum mean square error (MMSE) is derived with the aid of the Toeplitz form method and Szego theory. Based on this MMSE expression, the formulae for estimating the optimal filter¡¦s in-band prediction error and out-of-band noise attenuation are derived. Finally, the optimal filter is applied to sigma-delta modulation. It shows that the modulation performance and stability are intimately related to the filter performance and can be accurately estimated by the derived formulae.

Field-Programmable Gate-Array Design of Fractional-NFrequency Synthesizer for Wireless CommunicationsPeng, Kang-Chun 14 July 2000 (has links)
In this proposal, an advanced local oscillator with high resolution, low phase noise and fast switching
characteristics is designed for wireless communication applications. The circuit is based on fractional-N
frequency synthesis technique in which the use of delta-sigma modulator can remove the fractional spurs
effectively. The mechanism in regard to fractional spurs and phase noise for a fractional-N frequency
synthesizer will be studied and simulated by developing proper mathematical models. In the
implementation of the local oscillator, the analog circuit includes a 1000-1033 MHz VCO, crystal
oscillator and loop filter. The digital circuit includes a phase frequency detector, dual modulus divider
and 3rd order delta-sigma modulator. At first a FPGA will be used to prototype the digital circuit.
The final digital circuit will be implemented in a CMOS process and require 3V operation with low
current consumption. The design specifications include that under 1 KHz resolution the phase noise
levels are less than -90 dBc/Hz at frequency offets within a loop bandwidth more than 100 KHz.
Spurious components are less than -90 dBc/Hz and switching time is less than 1 ms over a 30 MHz
tuning range.

Design of RF/IF analog to digital converters for software radio communication receiversThandri, Bharath Kumar 17 September 2007 (has links)
Software radio architecture can support multiple standards by performing analogto-
digital (A/D) conversion of the radio frequency (RF) signals and running
reconfigurable software programs on the backend digital signal processor (DSP). A
slight variation of this architecture is the software defined radio architecture in which the
A/D conversion is performed on intermediate frequency (IF) signals after a single down
conversion.
The first part of this research deals with the design and implementation of a
fourth order continuous time bandpass sigma-delta (CT BP) C based on LC filters
for direct RF digitization at 950 MHz with a clock frequency of 3.8 GHz. A new ADC
architecture is proposed which uses only non-return to zero feedback digital to analog
converter pulses to mitigate problems associated with clock jitter. The architecture also has full control over tuning of the coefficients of the noise transfer function for obtaining the best signal to noise ratio (SNR) performance. The operation of the architecture is examined in detail and extra design parameters are introduced to ensure robust operation of the ADC. Measurement results of the ADC, implemented in IBM 0.25 µm SiGe BiCMOS technology, show SNR of 63 dB and 59 dB in signal bandwidths of 200 kHz
and 1 MHz, respectively, around 950 MHz while consuming 75 mW of power from ±
1.25 V supply.
The second part of this research deals with the design of a fourth order CT BP ADC based on gm-C integrators with an automatic digital tuning scheme for IF
digitization at 125 MHz and a clock frequency of 500 MHz. A linearized CMOS OTA
architecture combines both cross coupling and source degeneration in order to obtain
good IM3 performance. A system level digital tuning scheme is proposed to tune the
ADC performance over process, voltage and temperature variations. The output bit
stream of the ADC is captured using an external DSP, where a software tuning algorithm
tunes the ADC parameters for best SNR performance. The IF ADC was designed in
TSMC 0.35 µm CMOS technology and it consumes 152 mW of power from ± 1.65 V
supply.

Automatic Segmentation and Identification of Mixed-Language Speech Using delta-BIC and Support Vector MachinesWang, Sheng-Fu 09 September 2008 (has links)
This thesis proposes an approach to segmenting and identifying mixed-language speech.
Automatic LID can be divided into four steps, feature extraction, segmentation, segment clustering, and re-labeling. In feature extraction, we compare the group delay feature (GDF) with MFCC feature. Unlike the traditional feature from Fourier trans-form magnitude, GDF uses the phase spectrum. In segmentation, we compare delta Bayesian information criterion (delta-BIC) with support vector machines (SVMs). A delta-BIC is applied to segment the input speech utterance into a sequence of lan-guage-dependent segments using acoustic features. The segments are clustered using the K-means algorithm. Finally, re-labeling is used to determine the language of the clusters. SVMs proceed to segment and identify automatically after model training.
Considering the effect of the accent issue, we use the corpus English Across Taiwan (EAT) to perform our system. The experimental results show that the system can reach 78.13% in the frame hit rate under the baseline 57.77%.

A Novel Higher Order Noise Shaping Sigma-Delta ModulatorBehera, Khitish Chandra 01 March 2008 (has links)
The thesis focuses on a higher order noise-shaping Δ ADC architecture which employs filtered quantization error as a dither signal. Furthermore, the work studies implementation challenges using Switched-Capacitor and Switched-Current techniques.
Digitization in an IF conversion receiver can be accomplished either with a wide band Nyquist rate ADC or a BandPass Δ ADC. The use of the latter is the optimum solution since the bandwidth of the IF signals is typically much smaller than the carrier frequency and reducing the quantization noise in the entire nyquist band becomes superfluous. Instead by using BandPass Δ ADCs the quantization noise power is reduced only in a narrow band around IF location. We study state-of-the-art high dynamic range Δ data converter topologies suited for wide-band radio receivers. We propose a topology which achieves higher order noise shaping by employing filtered quantization error as a dither signal.
We study implementation challenges for Δ converters in digital technology. Traditionally, Δ ADCs used Switched-Capacitor (SC) circuits to realize their building blocks. This analog sample-data technique is based on the idea that a periodically switched capacitor can emulate a resistor. The limiting factor that degrades the performance of SC circuits implemented in standard VLSI technologies is the continuous reduction of supply voltages, prompted by the continuous scaling-down process. This fact, which is advantageous for digital circuitry, makes the design of SC circuits difficult, which are forced to use clock boosting strategies for switches and to increase the power consumption in order to obtain high-speed and high dynamic range opamps with low voltage operation. In this scenario, the use of current-domain sampled data technique, also named Switched-Current (SI), instead of voltages results advantageous for several reasons. As the signal carriers are currents, the supply voltage does not limit the signal range as much as in SC circuits. Therefore, SI circuits are more suitable than SC for low-voltage operation. This work studies the feasibility and bottlenecks of implementing Δ modulator building blocks using SI technique. A network-based analysis of river delta surface hydrology : an example from Wax Lake DeltaHiatt, Matthew R. 14 January 2014 (has links)
River deltas are dynamic ecosystems of environmental, ecological, and societal importance. In coastal Louisiana, land loss and increased nutrient loading are altering the eco-geomorphic equilibrium, raising concern for the environmental concerns associated with climate and anthropogenic change. Over the last 100 years, nearly 5000 km2 of wetlands have been submerged due to a variety of environmental and anthropogenic forces. Wetland drowning and costal retreat is predicted to continue, threatening both human and environmental interests. As a result, mitigation efforts in the form of planned river diversions designed to build new land by natural delivering sediment to the once-leveed floodplains have been proposed. Denitrification in coastal wetlands has the potential to limit the risks of hypoxia and related eco-geomorphic issues by reducing the nitrogen export to receiving waters.
The goal of this research project is to understand and quantify to propagation of environmental fluxes through a delta distributary system. Water fluxes in the delta distributary network are not solely propagated within the distributary channels and interdistributary areas, taking the form of inundated island interiors surrounded by subaerial levees, are hydrologically important. At Wax Lake Delta (WLD) in coastal Louisiana, roughly 50% of the flow is exchanged to the island swamps, suggesting that significant portions of nutrients are transported to the island interiors. The hydraulic residence times (HRTs) of the islands are estimated to be 15 – 29 hours and 11 – 18 hours on Mike and Pintail Islands, respectively; both being well below HRT estimates for significant denitrification. Spatial variability in network structure, specifically channel width and frequencies of confluences and bifurcations, influences the transport dynamics within the delta. However, flow partitioning in major distributary channels at WLD is relatively constant with time, supporting the hypothesis that network structure controls flux dynamics. / text

During the past decade, the high-speed rail (HSR) has got momentum in China, and a number of lines have been put into operation. However, it is noted that the HSR development in China is quite different from that in other regions. The discrepancies are mainly embodied in the duality of HSR types, the diversity of station locations, and the mixed-speed and cross-rail-type train running scheme. These characteristics have considerable impacts on the HSR stations in terms of the external accessibility in the HSR network as well as the internal accessibility in the cities.
Based on the comparative study on the accessibility of main HSR stations in Yangtze River Delta, it is discovered that compared with the conventional rail (CR), the HSR has significantly improved the external accessibility of various cities. It is also found that the HSR has further enhanced the hub status of big cities in the rail network, while the differences among the other cities have been reduced, since the small cities have benefited much more from the HSR than the medium cities. Besides, introducing a new HSR line would improve the external accessibility of cities not only in the HSR network but also in the CR network, due to substantial increases in the efficiency of the whole rail system. In terms of the internal accessibility, it is found that the location choice of stations has significant impacts on the accessibility of HSR stations in cities, and the newly built stations have much lower accessibility due to their remote locations and the under-developed transport facilities and services connecting to them. Overall, for a complete journey by the HSR, the improvement in the external accessibility has made the internal accessibility of HSR stations more critical and sensitive.
