PREDICTORS, MECHANISMS, AND DIVERSITY IN HUMAN-ANIMAL INTERACTION RESEARCH

Clare L Jensen (15350545) 26 April 2023 (has links)
<p> There has been substantial growth in recent decades in the variety and popularity of roles for dogs assisting humans in professional therapeutic partnerships. Simultaneously, increasingly rigorous research has repeatedly demonstrated the effects of professional human-canine partnerships in remedying important issues of public health among several at-risk populations. Yet, despite these areas of growth, mechanisms of action and predictors of efficacy in the field of human-animal interaction (HAI) remain poorly understood, and the role of human diversity has been rarely discussed. Thus, the present dissertation examines potential mechanisms and diverse predictors in two distinct samples of professional human-canine partnerships, while building the impetus to explore diversity in the HAI field as a whole. For the first three studies (Chapters 2-4), the selected samples of professional human-canine partnerships include military veterans working with psychiatric service dogs to mediate their symptoms of PTSD and healthcare professionals in pediatric hospitals working with facility dogs to benefit their patients. Following the introduction in Chapter 1, the objective of Chapters 2-3 was to examine primary human outcomes in the selected professional canine partnerships. In a crosssectional study of N=198 military veterans with PTSD, Chapter 2 compared PTSD symptom severity between n=112 veterans with service dogs and n=86 veterans on the waitlist to receive service dogs in the future. Next, in a cross-sectional study of N=130 healthcare professionals in pediatric hospitals, Chapter 3 compared job-related well-being and mental health of n=65 professionals working with facility dogs to n=65 working without. Findings suggested benefits to the mental health and well-being of both military veterans with PTSD and pediatric healthcare professionals, which were significantly associated with their professional canine partnerships. Subsequently, the objective of Chapter 4 was to explore how variances within a specific professional canine partnership may suggest predictors and potential mechanisms for the observed human outcomes. Thus, in a longitudinal study of N=82 veterans with PTSD and their service dogs, Chapter 4 explored associations of veterans’ outcomes with veteran-service dog demographics and interactions. Results suggested components of the human-canine partnership which might explain observed human outcomes, including social connections, a calming influence, and strong humananimal bonds. </p>

No. of bitstreams: 1 2016 - Daniela Pinto Gomes.pdf: 2118994 bytes, checksum: df26092e9f2c17eb3ae1a9ff3e3aad9a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-26 / CAPES / FAPERJ / This work entitled "Organic farming tomatoes in potponics and greenhouse with irrigation management by controller automatic" aimed to provide information to serve as a recommendation for a new tomato cultivation system potted and greenhouse with respect to inputs water and fertilizer, to ensure a sustainable production, mainly based on the use of residu?rios materials as a source of nutrients and automatic irrigation low cost. The specific objectives of this study were to assess: (a) the effect of different doses of wood ash and castor bean cake in the growth and productivity of tomato culture; and (b) the effect of different irrigation levels on growth and productivity of the tomato crop. Three experiments were conducted from 2013 to 2015 using a randomized block. In 2013, we evaluated the effect of five crecentes doses of wood ash and castor bean cake (160 g of ash and 90 g of castor bean cake per plant, 195 g of ash and 120 g of castor bean cake per plant, 230 g of ash and 140 g of castor bean cake per plant; 265 g of ash and 160 g of castor bean cake per plant, and 300 g of ash and 180 g of castor bean cake per plant) productivity of tomato cultivation. In 2014, in a factorial scheme (3 x 2), evaluated the effect of three wood ash levels (40, 80 and 120 g per plant) and two castor bean cake doses (140 and 280 g per plant) growth and productivity of the tomato crop. In 2015 we evaluated the effect of four irrigation levels (135, 165, 191 and 213 mm) on the growth and productivity of the tomato crop. The results in 2013 showed that the ash doses tested and castor bean cake did not influence the marketable productivity of tomato (1.24 to 1.59 kg per plant (24.8 to 31.8 t ha-1)). In 2014 most of the growth variables were positively influenced by the increase in wood ash and castor bean cake doses. Most marketable yield was obtained with the dose of 280 g of castor bean cake (1.99 kg per plant (39.8 t ha-1)), not significantly influenced by the ash doses. In 2015 most of the growth variables and marketable productivity were negatively with decreasing water depth. The level of 213 mm was responsible for greater marketable productivity (4.04 kg per plant (80.8 t ha-1)).

: Personalens erfarenheter av djurassisterade insatser medhundar inom kommunal LSS-dagverksamhet i Dalarnas län. / What difference makes the dog to our users? : Staff perspective onanimal-assisted interventions with dogs in municipal day-care forpersons with autism and/or intellectual disabilities in Dalarna County.

Zimmermann, Angélique January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to investigate how users are influenced by animal-assisted interventions with dogs in municipal day-care centres (developing centres or working places for persons with autism and/or intellectual disabilities) in Dalarna County. This is a qualitative study, initiated through a quantitative mapping concerning the presence of dogs or other animals in all municipal LSS day-care centres in Dalarna. Its limited to the staff perspective on the impact of dog-assisted interventions on the target group, and results are based on semistructured interviews with staff from all municipal day-care centres in Dalarna, where users are offered dog-assisted interventions. The results where analysed through previous research, KASAM and social responsiveness. They show that the dog-assisted interventions promote mental/physical wellbeing and motivate the users of the day-care centres to develop physical, mental and social skills. I found evidence that users benefit from animal-assisted interventions with dogs – in many ways.

Assistance dogs for military veterans with PTSD: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-synthesis

Sarah Leighton (14035923) 02 November 2022 (has links)
<p>Psychiatric assistance dogs for military veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) currently make up over 19% of assistance dog partnerships globally. We conducted a systematic review of the literature relating to these partnerships, with specific aims to (1) summarize their characteristics, (2) evaluate the quality of existing evidence, and (3) summarize outcomes. A total of 432 records were independently screened (Cohen’s kappa=0.90). Of these, 41 articles (29 peer-reviewed publications and 12 unpublished dissertations) met inclusion criteria. Data extraction was conducted to address the research aims, including a meta-analysis (quantitative outcomes) and meta-synthesis (qualitative outcomes). All peer-reviewed publications on the topic of psychiatric assistance dogs for veterans with PTSD were published within the last five years. The majority of included articles were quantitative (53%), 41% were qualitative, and 6% employed mixed methods. Mean methodological rigor scores were 80% for peer reviewed articles and 71% for dissertations, where higher scores represent more rigorous methodology. Quantitative articles reported significant improvements in the domains of PTSD severity, mental health, and social health. Impacts on physical health and global quality of life appear inconclusive. Meta-analysis (9 articles) revealed that partnership with an assistance dog had a clinically meaningful, significant, and large effect on PTSD severity scores (<em>g</em>=−1.129; <em>p</em><0.0001). Qualitative meta-synthesis identified two third order constructs: (1) Impact on the individual: mental & physical health and (2) Impact beyond the individual: building relationships & connection. This synthesis of increasingly prevalent research on assistance dogs for veterans with PTSD provides support for the impact of this complementary and integrative health intervention on PTSD symptom severity, and signs of meaningful improvements in adjacent domains including mental and social health. Gaps between quantitative and qualitative findings, along with the need to report greater demographic detail, highlight key opportunities for future research.</p>
