Sad, bad and mad : exploring child abandonment in South Africa.

Blackie, Deirdre Elizabeth 02 March 2015 (has links)
The following dissertation explores the experience and representations of child abandonment in urban Johannesburg, South Africa. I examine this complex social behaviour through a number of perspectives specifically: how it is portrayed in the media; how it is represented and managed by child protection officers; the lived experience of the abandoning mother and the abandoned child; and finally how it is understood in the context of Western biomedical principles and those of indigenous African ancestral beliefs. I suggest that child abandonment has been individualised and medicalised in South Africa. Individualised, in that it has been termed a problem that falls entirely within the domain of poor women, and frequently that these women are young teenagers. Medicalised in that a social behaviour that is not new, is increasingly being defined in medical terms through the portrayal and labelling of the abandoning mother as emotionally unstable and criminally insane. I argue that this has been done in an attempt to motivate for stricter surveillance and control over women’s sexual reproductive health and to divert attention from the state’s role in addressing this growing social challenge.

An analysis to the main economic drivers for offshore wells abandonment and facilities decommissioning

Wiegand, Sandra Milena 30 September 2011 (has links)
Decommissioning and abandonment is a relevant issue in the petroleum industry because of the complex operations involved and the results after the decision has been made. Several factors could lead to abandoning wells and decommissioning platforms, among others hurricanes, production decline, economic limit, etc. Decommissioning and abandonment operations have a great impact in the revenue stream which is either lost or temporarily deferred depending on the situation. Every year between 100-150 platforms are decommissioned and approximately 620 wells are abandoned in the Gulf of Mexico. A case-by-case scenario should be revised on an annual basis and all the possible options to be considered and submitted to the Government. This thesis presents an overview of the topic and an analysis on when decommissioning and abandoning alternatives are recommended for the optimization of the economical resources. / text

This work is a qualitative study that aims to map the concept of family in the contemporary Brazilian literature regarding personals practices, professionals and / or academics of Adoption. The works were selected from an already existent work in the literature, which join 680 publications related to Adoption, Abandonment and Institucionalization subjects. For selection, organization and analysis of the works we based ourselves in the Content Analysis methodology proposed by Bardin (1977). In view of the Child and Adolescent Statute promulgates on its article 29 the requirement of an appropriate family ambient - so that the child can be placed in a replacement family - and that nowadays we live with a lot of configurations and relatives arrangements, we looked in a lot of (re) productions of learning for the way how the family concept has been dealt with in produced works according to different paradigmatic advises. We concluded that does not exist a way of approach, not even one that can be considered ideal, the conceptions are various and carry with them values related to the professionals practices, knowledge theories, personals experiences and knowledge with the maternity and paternity adoptive.

Abandonment Fears in Persons with Alzheimer's at Adult Day Care Centers

Judkins, Wayne A. 27 May 1999 (has links)
In my research, I examined abandonment fears in persons with Alzheimer's disease at the Salem Veterans Affairs adult day care center. I observed fifty hours at the center, and conducted open-ended interviews with two of the participants and their respective caregivers. These two participants (Ellen and Opel) at the center expressed abandonment fears much more frequently than any of the other participants. I found that most of the time, these two women would express their abandonment fears in the form of repetitive questions about going home. Staff used two different methods to deal with the problem: 'reassurance by fact' and redirection. The staff was divided as to the efficacy of their methods and whether more frequent attendance would help Ellen and Opel to adjust to the center. Some participants were bothered by the their constant questions, while others were not. Using an existing attachment questionnaire, Ellen's daughter classified her mother as having an avoidant attachment style, but Opel's daughter classified her mother as having secure attachment. Although Ellen's behavior at the center fit with the description of a person with avoidant attachment (e.g., extreme self-reliance, activity disturbance), Opel's fearful nature did not suggest that she had a secure attachment style as her daughter believed. / Master of Science

The abandonment of souterrains: evolution, catastrophe or dislocation?

Armit, Ian January 1999 (has links)
No / This paper considers the evidence for the abandonment of souterrains in that part of east central Scotland characterized by Wainwright as 'southern Pictland'. The evidence suggests that most souterrains here were deliberately destroyed, or at least infilled, and that none seems to have outlasted the early third century AD. The process of destruction seems to have been associated with a significant degree of ritual activity not previously noted. It is postulated that the evidence would allow for a single episode of abandonment (a 'souterrain abandonment horizon'), in the late second or early third century AD, which might be related to a major reorientation of social and political structures, perhaps associated with changes in Roman frontier policy.
