Sad, bad and mad : exploring child abandonment in South Africa.

Blackie, Deirdre Elizabeth 02 March 2015 (has links)
The following dissertation explores the experience and representations of child abandonment in urban Johannesburg, South Africa. I examine this complex social behaviour through a number of perspectives specifically: how it is portrayed in the media; how it is represented and managed by child protection officers; the lived experience of the abandoning mother and the abandoned child; and finally how it is understood in the context of Western biomedical principles and those of indigenous African ancestral beliefs. I suggest that child abandonment has been individualised and medicalised in South Africa. Individualised, in that it has been termed a problem that falls entirely within the domain of poor women, and frequently that these women are young teenagers. Medicalised in that a social behaviour that is not new, is increasingly being defined in medical terms through the portrayal and labelling of the abandoning mother as emotionally unstable and criminally insane. I argue that this has been done in an attempt to motivate for stricter surveillance and control over women’s sexual reproductive health and to divert attention from the state’s role in addressing this growing social challenge.

Palavras- / ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to establish a relationship between the 1933 to 1949 socio-historical, political and educational contexts that surround the Bahia Children’s Shelter-Escola Professional de Menores, and the Instituto de Preservacao e Reforma (IPR). The research examines social, cultural, historical and political contexts that influenced the daily education approaches implemented at the children’s shelter as unlawful and misdirected “socializing” efforts. This research suggests that the innumerable far reaching educational reforms mandated in the 1927 Minor’s Code which included “specialize schools” and the emergence of the menores politic of the 1930 Revolution were ignored at the Bahia Children’s Shelter. Instead, the Bahia Children’s Center continued an authoritarian pedagogy representative of the Interim Government of Vargas as EPM or IPR. Hence, an educational approach that imposed “invisibility” and forge the “social mistake” milieu.

The Question of Child Abandonment in South Korea: Misplacing Blame on Personhood

Hong, Margaret 01 January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, I argue that traditional notions of Confucianism and its growing modernity within Korean society have contributed to the continuing issue of child abandonment, inhibiting Korean mothers from gaining bodily, social, and economic independence. There are a variety of governmental and societal pressures, including the emphasis on motherhood and the nuclear family, and expectations for the women, that push these unwed mothers to make undesirable decisions on whether or not to keep their child.

The Orphanage of Things: A Narrative of Abandonment

Elgemiabby, Malaz 01 January 2015 (has links)
In Sudan, 110 babies are abandoned in the streets of Khartoum every month. The majority of abandoned children are born out of wedlock. Young women with illegitimate pregnancies are often ostracized by their families and society, and the lack of emotional, financial and legal support has led many to take desperate measures, including the abandonment of their children. Relinquishing mothers exist like ghosts in Sudanese society. The only evidence of the mother’s experience is her anonymous, abandoned child. In order to understand and examine this phenomenon, I used ethnographic performance art informed by design research practice (Performative Research Design). I performed various acts of abandonment to examine the mechanism and psychology of the act of abandonment. I endeavored through concrete, lived experiences to better empathize with the relinquishing mother and create awareness of the wider psychological and social complexities of child abandonment.

A supervisão psicanalítica de ludoterapia de trauma e abandono: contribuições à luz da transferência e da contratransferência / Psychoanalytical supervision of play therapy in trauma and abandonment: a contribution in view of the transference and the countertransference

Souza, Adriana Borges Tannus de 18 June 2008 (has links)
This study investigates the psychoanalytical supervision of the play therapy with children of have suffered trauma and abandonment, taking into account the transference and the countertransference processes in the supervision of these psychotherapeutic processes, in the view of the English psychoanalysis, in special of Melanie Klein and her followers. The discussion of the concepts of trauma and abandonment, and of the psychoanalytical supervision of play therapy in these contexts, considered also several authors who have great affinity with Kleins ideas, such as Anne Alvarez, as well as researches in other fields that were compatible with the same theoretical approach. The clinical material analysed was based in the transcriptions of the play therapy sessions with the children, brought by their psychotherapists to supervision. For this analysis it was adopted an investigative approach compatible with the psychoanalytical supervision, focussing in the relationship patient/psychotherapist, and in the relationship psychotherapist/supervisor. The investigation concluded that trauma and abandonment can cause psychological disorders in the children that were exposed to them, and these experiences have also specific influences in the child/psychotherapist relationship as well as in the psychotherapists supervision. The difficulties presented in the play therapy of traumatized and abandoned children living in a public institution, as well as the anguishes that their physical and emotional reality mobilized in their environment and in the psychotherapist, the transmission of the negative feelings related to their traumatic experiences and, the constant challenges to have acting-outs and to leave the role of psychotherapist and of supervisor, are all important elements in the transference and countertransference of the emotional disorder, that psychotherapist and supervisor have to face in their clinical work.
