The velocity fields around a circular cylinder in a crossflow of drag-reducing polymeric solutions and water were experimentally investigated using a laser-Doppler velocimeter. Measured boundary-layer velocity profiles indicated that the flow parameter controlling the drag on a bluff body in drag-reducing flows is the turbulence intensity rather than the Reynolds number. For turbulence intensity less than 0.7% polymer addition induced delayed separation. For turbulence intensity over 1% the opposite effect was true. Time-averaged velocity profiles of water did not show any significant difference between self-induced and forced oscillatory flows.
Heat, mass and momentum transfer of Newtonian and power-law non-Newtonian fluids were theoretically investigated using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The results clearly· indicated that shear-dependent non-Newtonian viscosity controls the entire transport processes of the power-law fluids. For the major portion of the boundary layer, it was found that the more shear thinning the material exhibits, the lower the skin friction and the higher the heat transfer result. Accounting for the motion of the stagnation point provided an improved prediction of heat transfer for Newtonian fluid. / Doctor of Philosophy

One of the most recognized icons of Mexico is the mariachi moderno tradition, which in the global popular imaginary, is associated with nostalgic, humorous, and emotional songs of love, heartache, death, drinking, and place. Inseparably fused to tequila and the historic charro figure, mariachi moderno completes a symbolic trinity of hetero-nationalist culture, conveyed within a popular imaginary of authentic mexicanidad (Mexican-ness). For mariachis and aficionados in Mexico, performative hypermasculine machismo acts as a perceptual baseline, structuring modes of feeling that signify an experience of authentic nationalist musicality This process is musically constructed in an incorporation of bodily movement, instruments, sound timbres, and symbolic clothing, simultaneously gestured with a heavy male-accent fusing an experience that feels genuinely Mexican. This reflexive signification is a consequence of the lived experience, shared dispositions, and competencies learned in the habitus, constituting real and imagined notions of hetero-nationalist culture. I refer to this musical semiosis as mariachismo, a neologism describing an intersubjective experience of machismo-infused mariachi subjectivity, ritualized through repeated gestures of sound, lyric, and corporeality. The semiotic power of mariachismo is most potent for subjects enculturated to Mexico's hetero-nationalist culture, shaped by popular imaginaries operationalizing gender and mexicanidad, connecting the two, making them feel unquestioned, natural, and unmediated. The ontology of mariachismo, is in part revealed through an analysis of metaphors used by practitioners and aficionados to describe mariachi's musical techniques and social practices. These metaphors index an archive of embodied knowledge, a lived experience where hypermasculine subjectivity is reified and other forms of gendered performativity, including femininity and non-hetero subjectivities, are marginalized or purposefully subverted. Employing ethnomusicological analysis and building on concepts of habitus, performativity, and musical semiotics, this dissertation illustrates how mariachismo aesthetically enacts sonic-somatic gestures, enhanced by fetishized clothing, and construed within a symbolic music practice, all of which ritualize a perceptual experience of authentic mariachi musicality.

The first Western opera to be performed in Korea was Verdi's La Traviata on January 16, 1948, by the Joseon Opera Company. The first Korean opera, Chunhyangjeon by Jae Myung Hyun, premiered at the Korean National Theater in May 1950, just before the outbreak of the Korean War. Daejeon.go.kr reports that since that year approximately 200 Korean operas have been produced in Korea. Nevertheless, there have been consistent efforts to create and introduce Korean operas to the public. Most of them ended up being "one-off" performances with a single production. Most research on Korean opera has focused on its history, the challenges of producing new operas, or an analysis of selected Korean operas. This study equips singers with the following: pertinent historical background with the libretto, a synopsis, research regarding the composer and librettist, a character analysis, vocal and textual analysis of the selected opera arias, instruction regarding the Korean language, IPA, and a word-by-word translation of the text. I also make recommendations for tenor arias from Korean operas for singers with specific voice types.

The purpose of this document is to examine the effects of learning music similarly to the way humans learn language to answer the following questions: (1) what are the correlations between language learning and music learning? and (2) how can the ideals of language learning be used to maximize the effectiveness of the music learning process? To achieve this, the stages of language acquisition is examined alongside Edwin Gordon's skill learning sequence to draw comparisons between the music and language learning processes. Examined materials include common beginning band method books and trumpet-specific materials. Common problems public school educators face, as well as solutions to those difficulties are addressed. The solutions are concepts inspired by the language learning process that can be utilized to maximize the learning at both the beginning and advanced stages of learning. A beginner level piece ("Lyra" from Trumpet Stars by H.A. Vandercook) and an advanced level piece ("Danse" from Incantation, Threne, and Danse by Alfred Desenclos) are examined thouroughly with these ideals in mind. In order to maximize results of the music learning process, incorporation of language acquisition ideals is necessary not only at the beginning of one's musical journey, but also into the later years of higher-level learning. Through this, a musician can achieve maximum results with any musical endeavor, ultimately presenting the true opportunity for expression through music.

Examining the "Portfolio Careers" of Classical Musician Entrepreneurs through the Lens of Seven ClarinetistsGuzmán, Jen (Jennifer) 05 1900 (has links)
Many classically-trained clarinetists do not know how to use their performance skills and life experiences to create financially sustainable and artistically fulfilling musical opportunities. Music careers have traditionally included teaching positions in academia and performance positions in professional ensembles. Because of the limited number of jobs in these two areas, clarinetists, and classical musicians in general, often turn to work that provides financial security but may lack artistic fulfillment. The proposed solution to this situation is for musicians to create "portfolio careers," which is defined in this document as a combination of multiple part-time jobs to create full-time work. The purpose of this document was to examine best practices in creating and sustaining a portfolio career through the specific lens of seven clarinetists who have shown themselves to be successful performers and entrepreneurs. Results showed that the best practices include: 1) turn ideas into actions, even if the idea is still in the prototype stage, 2) build and utilize a network of successful and supportive people, 3) say "yes" to opportunities, and 4) find creative work outside the field of music that inspires music-related work.

This was a descriptive study that was completed to gather information about musical backgrounds of orchestral concert attendees, and to determine if those attendees perceived relationships between past participation in school music programs and current patronage of classical music concerts. Participants completed a survey about their musical experiences from childhood through adulthood, as well as memories from school music programs. Results and analysis of the responses identified common themes among participants' childhoods, their schooling and private lessons, experiences that served as gateways to classical music listening, the aesthetic benefits that they found in concert attendance, and negative responses that they had to music participation. Results also found a large number of pieces and composers that participants recalled from past participation in school music programs. Findings from this study analyze why these experiences were important to participants and why they might serve as motivation to attend classical music concerts or continue to support them. Implications of this study include suggestions for professional music organizations, school music educators, professional classical musicians, and church music directors. Suggestions for further research based on this study's findings are also included.

In today's rapidly changing performing arts market, trumpet players are required to be more versatile than ever. Trumpet performing jobs are diversifying and for a trumpeter, employment often requires the multi-faceted skill set that includes the ability to perform in all styles and settings ranging from jazz to classical, solo to large ensemble and brass quintet. As the demand for the brass quintet medium has grown, the study of chamber music repertoire has also become a common requirement in collegiate music programs. However, coaching in chamber music is limited, sometimes to as little as one hour per week. This coaching time is generally in the format of a single coach instructing the full chamber group, and therefore one-on-one instruction/attention is limited or nonexistent, leaving the onus of learning on the students, for whom these collegiate chamber music ensembles are their first exposure to the medium. While students have ample access to concentrated instruction for orchestral, band, and opera excerpts through the multitude of existing excerpt books, such a resource for trumpet players learning brass quintet repertoire does not yet exist. The purpose of this project is to create a succinct guide to the performance of the trumpet parts of standard brass quintet repertoire.

This research is an investigation of how the lullaby, which is often viewed as purely a simple and pretty song, is a multifaceted vocal tradition that carries historical and cultural significance. As an exploration of how sociocultural factors impact the emotions expressed and the stories told in lullabies, this research encourages deeper examinations of lullaby texts in relation to the historical, cultural, and social aspects reflected in their textual themes. Through the close analysis of text and music of folk and art song lullabies, I propose that the lullaby's function extends beyond putting a baby to sleep; the further roles of the lullaby encompass cultural connections and therapeutic functions for both the parent and child. As a result of these sociocultural considerations, dialogue exists between the lullaby text and its music that do not always match the song's primary intent to provide peace and comfort.
