El objetivo principal de la presente tesis es estudiar la estructura del anillo de Cobordismo Complejo MU*(pt). Milnor y Novikov fueron los primeros en mostrar que este es un anillo polinomial sobre generadores de grado par sobre Z. Este cálculo se realiza utilizando la sucesión espectral de Adams sobre una teoría de homología generalizada. La exposición de este teorema ocupa la parte final de este trabajo. En la primera parte se presenta el teorema de Adams sobre la convergencia de su sucesión espectral. En la segunda parte, se describe el espectro de Thom y la teoría de homología generalizada asociada a este espectro, que en este caso viene a ser el Cobordismo Complejo. También se describe de manera breve la estructura del Álgebra de Steenrod y su dual, que se utilizará al momento de calcular la estructura del anillo de homología H* (MU; Zp). Al final se adjunta un apéndice sobre álgebras y algebroides de Hopf, que incluye algunos isomorfismos de cambio de anillos. / -- The main objective of the present thesis is to study the structure of the Complex Cobordism Ring MU*(pt). Milnor y Novikov first accomplished this, and they(independently) showed that it is a polynomial ring over Z on generator of every even degree. It is achieved by using the Adams Spectral Sequence over a generalized theory. This theorem is expounded at the end of this work. In the first part, I present the theorem about the convergence of the Adams spectral sequence. In the second, I describe the Thom Spectrum and the generalized homology theory associated to this spectrum, in this case it is the Complex Cobordism. I also describe quickly the Steenrod Algebra and its dual, which will be used when we determine the structure of singular homology ring H * (MU; Zp). Finally, I attach an appendix about Hopf algebroides and Hopf algebras, which contains some change of ring isomorphism.

Modeling and Simulation of A Hybrid Electric Vehicle Using MATLAB/Simulink and ADAMS

As the global economy strives towards clean energy in the face of climate change, the automotive industry is researching into improving the efficiency of automobiles. Hybrid vehicle systems were proposed and have demonstrated the capability of reducing fuel consumption while maintaining vehicle performance. Various hybrid vehicles in the form of parallel and series hybrid have been produced by difference vehicle manufacturers. The purpose of this thesis is to create a hybrid vehicle model in MATLAB and ADAMS to demonstrate its fuel economy improvement over a conventional vehicle system. The hybrid vehicle model utilizes the Honda IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) architecture, where the electric motor acts as a supplement to the engine torque. The motor unit also acts as a generator during regenerative braking to recover the otherwise lost kinetic energy. The powertrain components’ power output calculation and the control logic were modeled in MATLAB/Simulink, while the mechanical inertial components were modeled in ADAMS. The model utilizes a driver input simulation, where the driver control module compares the actual and desired speeds, and applies a throttle or a braking percent to the powertrain components, which in turns applies the driving or the braking torque to the wheels. Communication between MATLAB and ADAMS was established by ADAMS/Controls. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the MATLAB/ADAMS hybrid vehicle model, simulation results were compared to the published data of ADVISOR. The West Virginia University 5 Peaks drive cycle was used to compare the two software models. The results obtained from MATLAB/ADAMS and ADVISOR for the engine and motor/generator correlated well. Minor discrepancies existed, but were deemed insignificant. This validates the MATLAB/ADAMS hybrid vehicle model against the published results of ADVISOR. Fuel economy of hybrid and conventional vehicle models were compared using the EPA New York City Cycle (NYCC) and the Highway Fuel Economy Cycle (HWFET). The hybrid vehicle demonstrated 8.9% and 14.3% fuel economy improvement over the conventional vehicle model for the NYCC and HWFET drive cycles, respectively. In addition, the motor consumed 83.6kJ of electrical energy during the assist mode while regenerative braking recovered 105.5kJ of electrical energy during city driving. For the highway drive cycle, the motor consumed 213.6kJ of electrical energy during the assist mode while the regenerative braking recovered 172.0kJ of energy. The MATLAB/ADAMS vehicle model offers a simulation platform that is modular, flexible, and can be conveniently modified to create different types of vehicle models. In addition, the simulation results clearly demonstrated the fuel economy advantage of the hybrid vehicle over the conventional vehicle model. It is recommended that a more sophisticated power management algorithm be implemented in the model to optimize the efficiencies of the engine and the motor/generator. Furthermore, it is suggested that the ADAMS vehicle model be validated against an actual vehicle, in order to fully utilize the multi-body vehicle dynamics capability which ADAMS has to offer.

Full vehicle dynamics model of a formula SAE racecar using ADAMS/Car

The Texas A&M University Formula SAE program currently has no rigorous method for analyzing or predicting the overall dynamic behavior of the student-designed racecars. The objective of this study is to fulfill this need by creating a full vehicle ADAMS/Car model incorporating an empirical tire-road force model and validating the longitudinal performance of the model by using vehicle responses recorded at the track. Creating the model requires measuring mass and inertia properties for each part, measuring the locations of all the kinematic joints, testing the Risse Racing Jupiter-5 shocks to characterize damping and stiffness, measuring engine torque, and modeling the tire behavior. Measuring the vehicle performance requires installation of the Pi Research DataBuddy data acquisition system and appropriate sensors. The 2002 Texas A&M University Formula SAE racecar, the subject vehicle, was selected because it already included some accommodations for sensors and is almost identical in layout to the available ADAMS/Car model Formula SAE templates. The tire-road interface is described by the Pacejka ??94 handling force model within ADAMS/Car that is based on a set of Goodyear coefficients. The majority of the error in the model originated from the Goodyear tire model and the 2004 engine torque map. The testing used Hoosier tires and the 2002 engine intake and exhaust configuration. The deliverable is a full vehicle model of the 2002 racecar with a 2004 engine torque map and a tire model correlated to longitudinal performance recorded at the track using the installed data acquisition system. The results of the correlation process, confirmed by driver impressions and performance of the 2004 racecar, show that the 2004 engine torque map predicts higher performance than the measured response with the 2002 engine. The Hoosier tire on the Texas A&M University Riverside Campus track surface produces 75??3% of peak longitudinal tire performance predicted by the Goodyear tire model combined with a road surface friction coefficient of 1.0. The ADAMS/Car model can now support the design process as an analysis tool for full vehicle dynamics and with continued refinement, will be able to accurately predict behavior throughout a complete autocross course.

Stefan Zweig had an extraordinary gift for mirroring the complexity of humankind and the human mind, and was undoubtedly one of the most translated authors in the 1930s, but he is still considered a “poor cousin” in the academic world. Indeed, both his life and his work have been consistently viewed through the events of history, something neither caused nor endorsed by him, with the result that his worldview and the general perception of that view often have been misunderstood. In the 1950s and 1960s, scholars focused on the author’s use of genres and language, as well as his political views during the Second World War, rather than on the analysis of his literary texts. Although recent research points to the importance of Zweig’s humanistic worldview, which insists on viewing all human action equally, the poor image of the author caused by his earlier reception still prevails. This thesis focusses on Zweig’s autobiographical work Die Welt von Gestern: Erinnerungen eines Europäers (1942) as an adaptation of both culture and history. This dissertation demonstrates, how through the subject perception of the “I,” “life writing” becomes “history writing,” dismantling a cultural and political world. Not only does this “I” hold multiple functions, but each function illuminates a different fragment of an event in search of a “truth.” Zweig’s autobiography incorporates elements from other genres, which enables us to see him in part as a postmodern author. To illustrate the game-like use of Zweig’s subjective worldview, Philippe Lejeune’s “autobiographical pact,” Mieke Bal’s concept of focalization, and Walter Benjamin’s essay “Der Erzähler” will form the framework for a linguistic, narratological, and philosophical analysis. In order to show that autobiographical writing resides in the tradition of alternative history, rather than in the simple enumeration of facts, Henry Adams’ The Education of Henry Adams (1918) has been woven into the analysis of Zweig’s text, as an example of an autobiography from a historian’s point of view, who, although motivated by different circumstances, exposes a similar philosophy of history to Zweig’s.
