Achieving Security and Privacy in the Internet Protocol Version 6 Through the Use of Dynamically Obscured Addresses

Dunlop, Matthew William 24 April 2012 (has links)
Society's increased use of network applications, such as email, social networking, and web browsing, creates a massive amount of information floating around in cyber space. An attacker can collect this information to build a profile of where people go, what their interests are, and even what they are saying to each other. For certain government and corporate entities, the exposure of this information could risk national security or loss of capital. This work identifies vulnerabilities in the way the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) forms addresses. These vulnerabilities provide attackers with the ability to track a node's physical location, correlate network traffic with specific users, and even launch attacks against users' systems. A Moving Target IPv6 Defense (MT6D) that rotates through dynamically obscured network addresses while maintaining existing connections was developed to prevent these addressing vulnerabilities.MT6D is resistant to the IPv6 addressing vulnerabilities since addresses are not tied to host identities and continuously change. MT6D leverages the immense address space of IPv6 to provide an environment that is infeasible to search efficiently. Address obscuration in MT6D occurs throughout ongoing sessions to provide continued anonymity, confidentiality, and security to communicating hosts. Rotating addresses mid-session prevents an attacker from determining that the same two hosts are communicating. The dynamic addresses also force an attacker to repeatedly reacquire the target node before he or she can launch a successful attack. A proof of concept was developed that demonstrates the feasibility of MT6D and its ability to seamlessly bind new IPv6 addresses. Also demonstrated is MT6D's ability to rotate addresses mid-session without dropping or renegotiating sessions. This work makes three contributions to the state-of-the-art IPv6 research. First, it fully explores the security vulnerabilities associated with IPv6 address formation and demonstrates them on a production IPv6 network. Second, it provides a method for dynamically rotating network addresses that defeats these vulnerabilities. Finally, a functioning prototype is presented that proves how network addresses can be dynamically rotated without losing established network connections. If IPv6 is to be globally deployed, it must not provide additional attack vectors that expose user information. / Ph. D.

Formy oslovování v TV / Forms of Addressing in Czech TV shows

Škodová, Kateřina January 2014 (has links)
Résumé The thesis deals with addressing in Czech TV programmes such as talk-shows. There are 54 programmes broadcasted in 2012 and 2013 that were analysed. Firstly, the term "addressing" is defined as well as its functions. Secondly, the thesis is focused on various kinds of addressing (direct and indirect addressing in particular), the relationship to vertical social distance and the frequency of honorifics. According to the analysis of selected TV programmes (the programmes are characterized, the results of the analyses are summarized in tables in the Summarizing protocols), it is described how the incidence of individual types of addressing is related to the type of the programme (talk-shows compared to political debates or conventional interviews etc.). The selected way of addressing largely defines the nature of communication used in the programme. In certain programmes the way of addressing is strictly formal (OVM), in other programmes the way of addressing is being "negotiated". The television is an influential media and its communication conventions are transferred to interpersonal communication - especially the growth of informal addressing can be observed regardless of the fact if it is a genuinely informal situation or a communication strategy that is aimed at having a pleasant conversation. Sub-Wavelength Resonance Imaging and Addressing of Cesium Atoms Trapped in an Optical Lattice

Lee, Jae Hoon January 2012 (has links)
We demonstrate a resonance imaging protocol for optical lattices that enables robust preparation and single qubit addressing of atoms with sub-wavelength resolution in 1D. A 3D optical lattice consisting of three sets of independent 1D counter- propagating laser beams provides the trapping potential for the atoms. On this optical lattice platform, a long-period 1D superlattice is imposed by interfering two laser beams at a shallow angle centered at the atoms. This superlattice creates a position-dependent shift of the qubit transition frequency defined between two spin states in the ground manifold. Isolated 2D planes of atoms are prepared by flipping the resonant spins with a microwave pulse and removing the non-resonant spins by pushing them out of the lattice with a resonant laser beam. The periodic planes of atoms that are prepared can be imaged by applying another microwave pulse and detecting the fluorescence from the spins that flip back to the initial state, as a function of superlattice displacement between the preparation and read-out pulses. By employing these new techniques for sub-wavelength imaging, we tested the effectiveness of using composite pulses for addressing the trapped atoms in an optical lattice. Composite pulse techniques can be used to reduce the sensitivity of the addressing to small variations in the relative position and intensity of the lattices. This robustness is achieved by applying numerically generated composite pulses that have a constant atomic response within a target range of relative lattice positions and intensities. We designed a composite microwave pulse that flips the spin with near unit fidelity for all atoms that are positioned within a target spatial region, while conserving the spin of the atoms outside of that region. This cannot be accomplished with plain pulses due to off-resonant excitation. We also expanded the concept of this technique for robustly addressing spins even further to implement independent unitaries, or single qubit quantum gates, across several adjacent lattice sites. Finally, in order to quantitatively measure the fidelity of these robust composite pulses, we perform a randomized benchmarking procedure, which was first proposed by Knill.

Fyzioterapie v povědomí pacientů / Patients' Knowledge about Physiotherapy

Staňková, Helena January 2011 (has links)
Title: Patients' Knowledge about Physiotherapy. Objectives: To contact representatives of foreign professional organizations to determine whether they were surveyed public knowledge about the physiotherapy, and let them answer some solved questions. Secondly, to investigate patients' knowledge about physiotherapy, if they see the difference between a physiotherapist and a masseur and if they properly title or address the physiotherapists. In case of desinformation of the patients to think what would be the best way to improve that. Methods: An english written questionnaire containing 6 questions was sent to the representatives of professional organizations by e-mail. The survey among Czech patients was conducted using a structured questionnaire consisting of 10 questions. Distribution took place in Prague and Pardubice. Results: Only 31% of the representatives of the professional organizations reported that the survey about the public knowledge about the physiotherapy was conducted but the document could not be obtained. 77% of the representatives also stated that patients with no previous experience with the physiotherapy rather know what is the content of this field and 69% also believed that the patients used name / surname most commonly in addressing the physiotherapists. 38% said that the...

Securely Consume Web Services Using PHP

Vo, Sonny Tran-Hai 19 December 2008 (has links)
The PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor language (PHP) has evolved to a sophisticated mainstream programming language for rapid development of significant Web applications at major sites including Facebook.com, Wikipedia.org and Yahoo.com. Leading software vendors such as Oracle and IBM are rushing in providing tools that bridge their products to PHP. However, we have observed a gap in facilitating PHP to utilize Web services efficiently. This thesis reports our efforts in design and implementation of PHP applications that consume Web services. In doing so, I have proposed a framework facilitating PHP programs to utilize Web services with high performance capability. In addition, a number of Web service standards including WS-Addressing and those in WS-Security are integrated into my PHP implementation. Examples of using various Amazon Web Services are provided with details.

CHURCH BASED INTERVENTIONS WITH HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: A DENOMINATION STUDY

DeWit, Michael Dale 01 June 2017 (has links)
The focus for this research project was to explore the development of human trafficking mercy ministries within South Coast Presbytery. South Coast Presbytery consists of 21 churches belonging to the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), a Christian denomination with member churches throughout the United States. The study was conducted following a constructivist paradigm with a PCA church belonging to South Coast Presbytery to determine the role of the church and the presbytery in addressing human trafficking through the development of mercy ministries. Interviews were conducted with 11 church members. Five major themes emerged from analysis of the interviews: 1) Effects of the existence of human trafficking on participants; 2) The role of the church/presbytery in addressing human trafficking; 3) Service provision to victims of human trafficking; 4) Partnerships with outside agencies; and 5) Ministry development in South Coast Presbytery. An action plan was developed based on the following subthemes: raising awareness, teaming up, the need for specialists, and the need for oversight. The action plan includes the following: the development of a presentation to raise awareness, plans to visit each church of South Coast Presbytery to promote a shared vision, and building a database of available church resources to link with needs identified by service providers in the community.

Cross-substrate Advertisement: Building Overlay Networks for Heterogeneous Environments

Valipour, Majid 28 July 2010 (has links)
Self-organizing overlay networks have emerged as a powerful paradigm for providing network services. While most approaches assume that overlay networks are built over a single substrate network, generally, the Internet, this thesis addresses the construction of overlay networks over multiple substrate networks. We present the design, implementation and evaluation of Cross-Substrate Advertisement (CSA) mechanisms for overlay networks over multiple heterogeneous substrate networks. A key difficulty arises from the more complex address bindings, since a single logical identifier is bound to multiple substrate addresses. We present mechanisms for exchanging information on address bindings and evaluate their effectiveness. The CSA mechanisms have been implemented in the HyperCast overlay protocol architecture, and have been evaluated in measurement experiments on an Emulab testbed. The experiments show that our CSA methods are effective in disseminating address information in large networks and are robust in the presence of network disruptions.

The main objective of this research is the analysis of the interrelation between the linguistic and the social factors from a journalistic corpus: the São Paulo “Imprensa Negra” – a movement carried through by blacks and destined to this population in the period after the slavery abolition in Brazil. The formation of this press occurred because of the need of propagating the claims for better living conditions and the proposals of insertion in the Brazilian society. To fulfill the objective of this work, we analyzed three “Imprensa Negra” newspapers: O Kosmos, O Alfinete e O Clarim d’Alvorada. This choice is justified by a combination of factors, including the material availability, the production period and place (the beggining of the 20th century / São Paulo city) and the specificity of these newspapers. To achieve this purpose, we chose to analyze the addressing system used in the newspaper, because we belive that this linguistic phenomenon is a privileged example of the relationship between the language choice and its social motivation. In order to establish the black population uses and the uses typically employed by the journalism of the time, it was necessary to compare the “Imprensa Negra” to the widest circulation newspaper in the São Paulo city: O Combate. Since the newspaper is a genre consisting by texts of different natures, we emphasize the theoretical proposal of Bonini (2003, 2004, 2006), which provides the newspaper analysis as a hypergenre, in order to evaluate the peculiar characteristics of each newspaper genre for relating them to the employment of the addressing forms. We analyzed the linguistic phenomenon of this study from the relationship of some theoretical points of view: the Soto (2001) proposal of the speaker’s situation analysis, the inquiry of the interactivity marks proposed by Andrade (2008) and the semantics...
