Examining the relationship between female parents with low perceived control and adolescent child stress

Monaghan, Brendan P. 01 May 2011 (has links)
Adolescence is a stressful time for many children. Changes in their environment or changes in social situations are some typical stressors that an adolescent child might encounter. Interactions with parents can also be a stressor for a child. Previous research has shown that a risk factor for a parent using harsh parenting techniques is perceived control. Parents who have low perceived control are at a higher risk to engage in physical parenting techniques or child abuse. This study included 198 middle school students and their female parent or guardian pairs (296 total participants), with the adolescent participants ranging in age from 10-year-old to 14-years-old. The adult participants were evaluated for their level of perceived control and the adolescent participants were evaluated for their level of perceived stress. The results showed that parents who perceived themselves as have a low amount of control over their child's behavior (low ACF), regardless of the level of control the parents perceived the child to have over their own behavior (CCF), were linked with their child have a high level of perceived stress, F (1, 182) = 5.14, p = .025. This effect was found only for the 14-year-old participants, t (30) = 2.774, p = .009. Implications of thesis results and areas of further research are suggested. It is possible that as a child gets older and enters puberty, the parent of the child feels as if they are losing control over their child and, as a result, resort to more forceful parenting techniques to regain control.

The role of communication technology in adolescent relationships and identity development

Cyr, Betty-Ann 01 May 2012 (has links)
Text messaging, e-mail, instant messaging, and social networking sites are changing the way people interact with each other. The popularity of these communication technologies among emerging adults in particular has grown exponentially, with little accompanying research to understand their influences on psychosocial development. This study explores the relationship between communication technology usage (text messaging, e-mail, instant messaging, and social networking) and adolescent adjustment among 268 high school students. It was hypothesized that use of communication technology would be related to psychological adjustment, including identity development, relationship attachment and peer conflict. Participants were recruited from three public high schools in central Florida (69% female, 81.9% White). Time spent using communication technology was significantly correlated with psychological symptom severity (i.e. anxiety and depression), identity distress, peer aggression, and existential anxiety. It was also significantly but negatively correlated with relationship avoidance. Degree of usage of communication technology for interpersonal communication was significantly correlated with peer aggression, relationship anxiety, and existential anxiety. Those with a preoccupied style (high in relationship anxiety, low in relationship avoidance) spent significantly more time using communication technology than those in the dismissive (high in avoidance, low in anxiety), fearful (high in both), and secure (low in both) styles. Further analyses and their implications for adolescent development will be discussed.

This text designs the process of my Master Course research and aims at reaching, from the relationship between social educators and adolescent girls at a shelter in Fortaleza, the possible changes which those characters perceive about themselves while in touch at the social shelter. From this viewpoint, I could figure out the characteristics of: the girls sent to shelter institutions; the different discourse practices that institute this âprotection placeâ according to the ECA; the girls considered in âvulnerability situationâ and the social educators whom the girls share the shelter with. From the dialogue between authors such as Paulo Freire, Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, LoÃc Wacquant, JoÃo Figueiredo, Leonardo Boff among other discontent thinkers, I tried to understand at what proportion the official protection reveals to be at the same time protection and punition and also question whether this protection is upon the girls or the state itself. I made use of an ethnographical methodology through the following techniques: open interview, participant observation, documental research, and data analysis from the perspective of the French Discourse Analysis (A.D.), pointing out authors like Michel Foucault and Dominique Maingueneau. This way, from some generate-words like adolescence/adolescent, shelter, vulnerability and social educator, I tried to decompose the structure of the social shelters as a place to give shelter and protection in order to understand the parallel movement of obligation and punition that institute different political practices.
