WHIP, BABIP, and FIP: the role of radio broadcasters in the diffusion of advanced statistics in Major League Baseball broadcasts

Nehm, Eric January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Journalism and Mass Communications / Barbara DeSanto / The purpose of this study was to take a closer look at the use of advanced statistics in Major League Baseball (MLB) radio broadcasts and the possible effects usage could have on the roles of MLB broadcasters. This study used a theoretical framework supported by role theory and diffusion of innovations theory. The study employed in-depth interviews of eight MLB radio broadcasters to get a better understanding of the broadcasters’ thoughts on the value of advanced statistics, how using advanced statistics could affect their role as a broadcaster, the factors that influence the potential inclusion of advanced statistics in their broadcasts, and ultimately, whether broadcasters perceived advanced statistics as a trend or a fad. The interviews revealed a number of things about the baseball broadcasting industry with disagreements appearing in regards to techniques in using advanced statistics in broadcasts and the value of advanced statistics to listeners. Despite the disagreements, the most important finding was the unanimous belief that advanced statistics are not a fad, but rather something that will remain a part of baseball broadcasts going forward.

On nonparametric techniques for analyzing nonstationary signals

David Baptista De Souza, Douglas 08 October 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In the analysis of the signals of natural origin, we are often confronted with situations where we do not know if a change occurred, or where the possible point of change can be located(localized). However, diverse methods in signal processing rest(base) implicitly on a hypothesis of stationarity, because the still case is defined well in a theoretical prospect(perspective). On the other hand, all the processes of the real world are a priori non-still and, in the majority of the cases, this supposition shows itself true. Given that there are numerous manners by which the property of stationarity can be broken, various tests of stationarity were developed to test the various forms of non-stationarity. This thesis(theory) concentrates on the conception(design)

On nonparametric techniques for analyzing nonstationary signals / statistiques avancees, estimation, detection, precipitation, modele de climat, methodes par apprentissage

De Souza, Douglas David Baptista 08 October 2013 (has links)
In the analysis of the signals of natural origin, we are often confronted with situations where we do not know if a change occurred, or where the possible point of change can be located(localized). Diagnostika herního výkonu statistickou analýzou v ledním hokeji / Diagnosis of game performance by statistical analysis in ice hockey

Baláž, Matúš January 2018 (has links)
Aim of the thesis The aim of this thesis is to show usage of analysis of basic and advanced statistics to evaluate the game performance in ice-hockey. Using this analysis can be more accurate because it is based on facts. This statement is compared with evaluation of the game performance by the experts that used direct observing method. The main aim of this thesis is to bring this idea to the Czech ice-hockey community which can be helpful to improve the club hockey in Czech Republic or improve Czech ice-hockey itself. Methods of thesis The method of analysis of statistical data to evaluate the game performance is used in this diploma thesis. Statistical data were acquired by indirect watching of video records of the games. This analysis is compared with method of direct observing of the game to evaluate the game performance which was used by experts. Conclusion By analyzing current situation in evaluating the game performance it was found out that many teams are still using method of direct observing to evaluate the game performance. In practical part of the thesis the experts after using method of direct observing of the game came up with different conclusions. In comparison with statistical analysis conclusions of the experts are not based on facts. In the discussion the experts talk that...

Srovnání vybraných výkonových ukazatelů hráčů NBA v utkáních na ME 2011 a MS 2014 / Comparison of selected performance indicators basketball players from NBA in matches at the European Championship in 2011 and World Cup 2014

Kanta, Jakub January 2016 (has links)
Title: Comparison of selected performance indicators basketball players from NBA in matches at the European Championship in 2011 and World Cup 2014 Goals: Analyze individual efforts NBA players for two international events with national team, in broader context to evaluate and quantify their efficiency with the two special coefficients. Compare their performance on each tournament with using selected statistics, than compare them with the elite players in many categories at the championships, but also in their teams. I think very useful is final comparison their results on tournaments with their career averages from national team and NBA regular season, to see if the performances for national team achieve their performances in the best club competition in the world. In teoretical part I'll also focus to the socio-economic aspects affecting composition of national basketball teams, which significantly affect the overall composition and therofore their success , which is prestented by overall team placement. Obvious is endeavour to describe the diversity of game plans in overeas and Europe, but also different politics of NBA and FIBA. Method: For my thesis I chose a secondary analysis of official statistics NBA players emerged on both of these tournaments, so the Europeans, but also with a valid...
