Dynamic heterogeneous team formation for robotic urban search and rescue

I developed a framework to support the maintenance of teams of heterogeneous robots operating in complex and dynamic environments such as disaster zones. Given an established team, my work also facilitates the discovery of work to be done during the team's mission and its subsequent assignment to members of the team in a distributed fashion. I evaluated my framework through the development of an example implementation where robots perform exploration in order to locate victims in a simulated disaster environment.

The Mathematics of principal-agent problem with adverse selection

This thesis studies existence and characterization of optimal solutions to the principal-agent problem with adverse selection for both discrete and continuous problems. The existence results are derived by the abstract concepts of differentiability and convexity. Under the Spence Mirrlees condition, we show that the discrete problem reduces to a problem that always satisfies the linear independence constraint qualification, while the continuum of type problem becomes an optimal control problem. We then use the Ellipsoid algorithm to solve the problem in the discrete and convex case. For the problem without the Spence Mirrlees condition, we consider different classes of constraint qualifications. Then we introduce some easy-to-check conditions to verify these constraint qualifications. Finally we give economic interpretations for several numerical examples. / Graduate

The main objective of this thesis is to defend an account of the control that agents possess over their actions from the perspective of the causal theory of action, that is, a theory that sees actions as events caused by internal states of their agents. The explanatory strategy that is employed for this purpose consists in addressing three interdependent and fundamental problems concerning the possibility of this type of control. The first problem arises from the possibility of controlling an action that is itself transitively caused by previous events. The answer given to this problem is grounded on a careful description of basic actions and on an identification of the internal states that function as the sources of control. The second problem emerges from a variety of causal deviance, namely, a conceptually possible scenario that satisfies the requirements for a bodily movement to be under the control of its agent without this movement being intuitively under the control of its agent. The answer given to this problem comes from the examination of the sources of the intuitions associated with causal deviance and from the recognition of the causal contribution of epistemic features present in the antecedents of an action. The third problem results from the possibility of producing an action that can only be partially controlled. This is problematic if one accepts that producing an action entails controlling it, as is suggested in this thesis. The reply given to this problem adapts an intention-based account of action guidance to the needs of an account of degrees of control, while remaining compatible with the proposal that producing an action is sufficient to control it.

This thesis investigates the early stages of the software development process for agent-based models of pedestrian behaviour. Planning for pedestrians is becoming more important as planners and engineers become more aware of the sustainability and environmental aspects of transport and infrastructure. It is also necessary for the planning and management of pedestrian areas and events. Pedestrian behaviour is more difficult to model than other transport modes as it is not as constrained and operates at a finer scale. Many approaches have been developed for modelling pedestrian behaviour. The simplest involve a single mathematical equation taking into account area and attractiveness of an area to calculate the maximum capacity. More complicated mathematical models involving differential equations have also been used. Agent-based modelling is a recent development in modelling and simulation. These simulations contain agents who interact with each other and the environment in which they are situated. Their similarity to human societies has led to their use for many social applications. Many modellers are unsure of what agents are and how to develop models using them. In some cases, agents may be useful. In other cases, the model outputs and realism may not offset the learning curve, development time, and increased complexity of an agent-based model. (For complete abstract open document)
