Sendo retiradas de seus familiares, quer pela condição de extrema miséria, quer pelo abuso indiscriminado do poder familiar que vitimiza suas proles com toda sorte de violência, crianças e adolescentes são enviadas para abrigos, como medida de proteção. Do caráter excepcional e provisório o que presenciamos são abrigamentos realizados de forma corriqueira, numa atitude comum e infelizmente, em muitos casos, por longos períodos ou mesmo até que atinjam maioridade perante a lei. As relações sociais dessas crianças com a instituição família e com a comunidade, transformam-se radicalmente. Passam a ser "filhos de ninguém", vivendo com mais tantos por alguns dias, meses ou longos anos. No sentido de aprofundar conhecimento acerca do universo do abrigo, o estudo proposto teve como objetivo conhecer as instituições abrigo e família através das representações sociais de crianças e adolescentes institucionalizados, na cidade de Ribeirão Preto - SP, contribuindo para maior entendimento sobre o universo da institucionalização. Tendo como abordagem metodolótica a pesquisa qualitativa, utilizamos com forma de coleta de dados a técnica de entrevista semi-estruturada e desenhos produzidos pelas crianças e adolescentes abrigados, sujeitos desse estudo. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Enormous contingent of children and adolescents lives today in some shelter institution, away from family interaction, deflagrating once again the large void existing between Brazilian legislations and reality. Being removed from their families, whether because of extreme poverty or because of the indiscriminate abuse of family power that victimizes its offspring with all sorts of violence, children and adolescents are sent to shelters as a means of protection. Of exceptional and provisory nature, what we witness are shelters provided in a widespread fashion, with a common attitude and unfortunately, in many cases, for long periods or even until legal adulthood is reached. These children's social interaction with the family as an institution and with the community changes drastically. They become "nobody's children", living with many others for a few days, months or long years. With the purpose of expanding the knowledge about the universe of shelter, the proposed study had as objective to know the shelter and the family as institutions through the social representation of institutionalized children and adolescents in the city of Ribeirão Preto - SP, contributing to a greater understanding about the universe of institutionalization. Having as a theoretical reference the qualitative research, we used as the means for data gathering the technique of semi-structured interview and drawings produced by sheltered children and adolescents, the subject of this study.
