The experiences of older Black African women living with HIV in the UK : an IPA studyHeer, Kuljit January 2017 (has links)
Due to the improved availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) life expectancy amongst people living with HIV has drastically increased. Older people, aged 50 and over now make up the fastest growing group of individuals living with HIV in the UK. Despite this little is known about their experiences of ageing with HIV. In addition, further still is known about older Black African women living with HIV in the UK, despite the complexity of their social and political context. This was, therefore, the first study to explore the lived experiences of this underrepresented group of women. The thesis adopted a phenomenological approach to examining how the intersections of older black African women's identities shaped their experiences of living with HIV in the UK. In addition, it explored the ways in which they coped with the devastating impact HIV appeared to have on their lives. Using interviews with seven women and interpretative phenomenological analysis, the results revealed three master themes. These were 'Spoilt Identities', 'A present without light and a future without hope' and 'Escaping the labyrinth of distress and uncertainty'. A detailed account of these master themes is provided. The findings are discussed in relation to existing literature, implications for clinical practice, methodological limitations and suggestions for future research.

Analýza a hodnocení vnitrofiremní komunikace na příkladu konkrétních firem / Analysis and evaluation of internal communication in a particular firmsMarel, Miloslav January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to highlight the important aspects in internal company relationships focusing on corporate culture and internal communication. The theoretical terms such as information, communication, motivation, work motivation, organizational culture, domestic corporate communications and their interrelationships are described in the introductory part. The background and knowledge of the theoretical parts are used in the analysis of two specific companies (the first is a Czech middle-sized company with a long tradition and the other is the Czech branch of multinational pharmaceutical corporation) in the practical part. Data were collected by questionnaire, supplemented by personal interviews with staff and management of both companies. Data were evaluated according to several criteria, mostly according to corporate nationality and job title (ordinary employee, manager, top manager). The analysis found many failures in internal communication in both companies, especially in communicating with ordinary employees. Comparing the two companies showed that the level of internal communication in the Czech company is at significantly lower level than in a company with a strong foreign background. Based on the results of analysis and knowledge of internal communication issues were the two companies at the end of the analysis provided with the concrete measures to improve their corporate culture through internal communication. Overall, the results of the practical part indicated that the corporate culture and internal communication are still underestimated in the environment of Czech firms and at a lower level in comparison with foreign companies.

"All I've got to do is act naturally" : issues of image and performance in the Beatles' filmsPiotrowski, Stephanie Anne January 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, I examine the Beatles’ five feature films in order to argue how undermining generic convention and manipulating performance codes allowed the band to control their relationship with their audience and to gain autonomy over their output. Drawing from P. David Marshall’s work on defining performance codes from the music, film, and television industries, I examine film form and style to illustrate how the Beatles’ filmmakers used these codes in different combinations from previous pop and classical musicals in order to illicit certain responses from the audience. In doing so, the role of the audience from passive viewer to active participant changed the way musicians used film to communicate with their fans. I also consider how the Beatles’ image changed throughout their career as reflected in their films as a way of charting the band’s journey from pop stars to musicians, while also considering the social and cultural factors represented in the band’s image. Such elements in the Beatles’ carefully constructed image reflected youth culture and countercultural thoughts and beliefs. Finally, through a close analysis of the Beatles’ musical sequences I have shown how experimentation with artistic synergy enabled the band to produce new and innovative films and lyrics while allowing each member to develop as individual musicians. This experimentation and willingness to undermine traditional film and pop music practices helped to change artists’ approaches in the entertainment industries.

The uncentred self: image and awareness in the Middle English religious lyricsSadedin, Ann Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents a new approach to the alterity of medieval texts in a psycho-literary analysis of the modes of consciousness informing one group of those texts, the Middle English religious lyrics. In a bilateral analysis, Part I establishes criteria for evaluating modes of ego and relates these criteria to what is known about medieval culture and mentality with examples from the lyrics; Part II examines textual evidence from these poems for indications of notions of the self and the way the self is experienced. The thesis argues that a major source of medieval alterity lies in the ready access in the Middle Ages to modes of consciousness comparable to that identified by the archetypal psychologist James Hillman as an imaginal ego. The imaging of various aspects of the self is surveyed: body-consciousness, modes of perception, and major self-awareness-enhancing experiences of life-suffering, woundedness, sickness, old age, and death. Hypnotic aspects of the lyrics are found to be particularly significant in maintaining this consciousness. (For complete abstract open document)

Efforts to improve brazilian education are common in the current context that urges for changes when it is examined from data indicating deficiencies in various aspects, including the own teaching-learning process. The crisis in education extends to a crisis of values on which remains necessary to participate in the search for solutions, the various social groups and institutions, including the school, held responsible, next to the family, the education of children and youth in relation to ethical values indispensable for the exercise of citizenship. In this context, the objectives of this study were: 1) to identify, describe and analyze the definitions of ethics and pro-ethical behavior used by teachers in the school context and educational proposals of these behaviors at school; 2) identify the teacher's role in teaching-learning process of pro-ethical behavior; 3) raising needs and alternative solutions to designs for strengthening and consolidating the teaching of relevant pro-ethical behavior for people from participating schools. Participated 75 teachers and 10 managers from six public schools in a city in the interior of São Paulo. Teachers answered a questionnaire and managers to interview, in order to identify the important school context characteristics for cultural planning. The results show that teachers seek to teach pro-ethical behaviors often in situations of behavior and abuse problems, aiming to change student behavior. There is little clarity about what is expected of students in this perspective, and teaching happens informally, without systematic guidelines. The main demands identified for intervention refer to students' behavior problems and the absence of the family in school, and in this sense, interventions can be made to strengthen the cultural practices related to the teaching pro-ethical behavior students, based on behavioral analytical strategies, such as format of continuing education for teachers.

The development of a novel on-line system for the monitoring and control of fermentation processesWang, Yu January 1995 (has links)
This thesis describes the development of a computer controlled on-line system for fermentation monitoring and control. The entire system consists of a laboratory fermenter, flow injection system (four channels), a newly designed on-line filter, biomass analysis channel, pH and oxygen controllers as well as a spectrophotometer. A new design of gas driven flow injection analysis (FIA) allows a large number of reagents to be handled. The computer-controlled four channel PIA system is well suited for sequential analysis, which is important for fermentation on-line mOnitoring. The system can change the wavelength of the spectrophotometer automatically for each PIA channel, which makes the system powerful and flexible. A high frequency, low energy ultrasonic filter was modified and applied to the system for on-line mammalian cell culture sampling without breaking the sterile barrier. The results show that this novel application of ultrasonic filter technology results in higher efficiency and reliability and a longer life cycle than other types of filter. All the operations of the analytical system are controlled by a Macintosh computer (Quadra 950). The control program was written in LabVIEW which is a graphical programming language and well applicable to fermentation control. The software communicates with detectors, data acquisition, data analysis and presentation. The system can programmatically control up to 50 devices. Mammalian cell batch culture was used as an example of the application of the system. The system consists of a laboratory fermenter with a continuous sample withdrawal filter and an analysis system where glucose, lactate and ammonia, lactate dehydrogenase and biomass were measured. Cell viability was estimated by microscopic assay with trypan blue. pH and Oxygen were also measured. The system response was fast and yields a large number of reliable and precise analytical results which can be of great importance in the monitoring and control of mammalian cell culture conditions.

(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Exceeding any initial expectation of serving exclusively as a means of interpersonal communication, social media have become complex sources of information that exert great influence and power of persuasion in the daily lives of its users. This tool is so adapted to the contemporary way of life that it makes the reinforcement immediate and its effects viable and promotes the maintenance of affective and social ties through the use of its devices. In this context, this work has as main objective to identify the phenomenon of polarization of opinions using a multi-referenced approach regarding the literature review, in addition to proceeding to a conceptual examination of the theme from the fundamentals of Behavior Analysis, seeking to describe how the themes are perceived through the responses of the research participants. The study had the participation of 53 students of the Psychology course in two cities in the interior of the state of São Paulo, who took a stand against polarizing themes. The researched bibliography showed the great capillarity of social media and the influence of variables, such as Fake News, Bubble Filter, Bots and Binary Thought. Through the assumptions of the Theory of Relational Frames (de Rose, 2016) it was found that functions attributed by direct training to a stimulus are shared by stimuli coordinated to it so that, without the need for any direct training, coordination relationships (equivalence) can reproduce the effects of respondent conditioni... Status populární kultury v současném českém tisku : obsah médií a představy novinářů / The status of popular culture incontenporary czech press:the media content and ideas of journalistsPetrášková, Bohumila January 2015 (has links)
This thesis defines wide phenomenon of popular culture and follows the way it is represented in current Czech press. The initial part of the thesis defines popular culture based on the main theoretical grounds. After that popular culture is put in context of the mass society media audiences and emphasize the delimitation of pop culture versus high culture. The theoretical part of the thesis is closed by chapter concerning the role of the press in the process of defining the popular culture in current society. The main focus of the empirical part lies on frame analysis across the spectrum of Czech dailies (Blesk, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes) and weeklies (Instinkt, Kulturní týdeník A2, Reflex) that examines how the popular culture is presented to the current readership. The analysed articles were published at the time of broadcasting of the first series of the examined pop cultural event represented by a TV show "StarDance…Když hvězdy tančí". The discovered framework is interpreted in context of the theoretical concepts and subsequently it is confronted with a point of view of the current journalists (by means of semi-structured interviews), who write about popular culture on everyday basis and who in a sense represent a cultural elite themselves. The main goal is to find out (in connection...
