Sustainable Performance Measurements of Logistics in Dispersed Supply Chains / Utvärderingssystem av hållbar prestation inom logistik i utspridda försörjningskedjor

Persson Håstlund, Pontus, Widenfors, Emelie January 2015 (has links)
Pressure on companies to show evidence of compliance with sustainable requirements is increasing. Performance measurement systems (PMSs) assist managers in making such choices that optimize sustainability within supply chain operations. At the same time, companies’ supply base is growing globally and incurring an increase in one of the most visible parts of a supply chain's environmental impact - transportation. The difficulty lies in obtaining standardized data of sustainable impact by transportation. Thereby, ability to show compliance by measuring and evaluating the sustainable performance of transportation is problematic. This report thus addresses the issue of data availability and quality and its impact on ability to measure and evaluate performance in transportation. Further, the objective is to investigate what critical aspects to consider in order to manage environmental performance in a measurement system of logistics. A case study at Company X, a globally dispersed company within the manufacturing industry has been conducted in order to bring clarity to the questions posed. A framework of founding steps in the development of a PMS with the inclusion of environmental sustainable aspects has been developed from previous research to assess the findings against. The analysis carried out show evidence of availability and quality of data heavily hindering development of Sustainable Performance Measurement Systems (SPMS) by inclusion of environmental aspects. The fundamental aspects in need of consideration are summarized by; commitment and technical support, data availability, management of data and design of measurements. Further there lies a critical factor within management of measurements. This study contributes to practitioners with guidance from developed framework to assess critical factors. The theoretical contribution lies within the investigation of obstacles in need of consideration in development of SPMS, a present under-research area, especially in an industry context. Keywords: Sustainable Performance Measurement, Sustainable Performance Measurement Systems

Development of a supervisory system for maintaining the performance of remote energy management systems / Johan Nicolaas du Plessis

Du Plessis, Johan Nicolaas January 2014 (has links)
Energy services companies (ESCOs) typically implement energy management systems (EMSs) as part of Demand-Side Management (DSM) projects on South African mines. After DSM project completion, the mine becomes responsible for maintaining the performance of the EMS. Due to a lack of experience in using specialised EMSs, mines typically contract ESCOs for EMS maintenance. However, maintaining a large number of EMSs remotely is a resource-intensive task because of time wasted on daily monitoring and travelling to perform on-site maintenance. For the same reason, remote maintenance technologies have become widely used to maintain cellular devices, vehicles and industrial equipment. Mine EMSs typically control production-critical systems that in turn ensure safe working conditions underground. EMSs execute highly specialised control philosophies to achieve electrical energy management, while ensuring safe and productive system operation. None of the work done on remote maintenance, however, provides an integrated solution to maintain the performance of a growing number of these specialised EMSs. As part of this study, a supervisory system was developed to optimise remote maintenance of different EMS technologies. The supervisory system builds on the fundamentals of existing remote maintenance technologies, complemented by comprehensive diagnostics of specialised EMS technologies. This is possible through automated diagnostics of EMS components, the control philosophy and overall EMS performance. Maintenance management forms part of the supervisory system to ensure that maintenance is performed with optimal efficiency. A system implementation was executed to prove the feasibility of the supervisory system. The functional operation of the system was verified with pre-set scenarios that simulated day-to-day operation and common fault diagnostic events. As part of the case studies conducted for this thesis, the supervisory system was integrated with three distinct EMS technologies implemented on South African mines. To support the results of these case studies, the system validation was extended through integrations with seven additional EMSs. For the first time, a supervisory assessed the condition of the EMS components, the control philosophy and DSM performance comprehensively. The results (obtained over a period of more than six months) indicated that the average operational availability of EMS components improved from 90% to 97%. The average EMS performance improved from 1.8 MW to 2.5 MW, an improvement of 39%. The resulting electricity cost reduction achieved on the case studies accumulated to approximately R6 million during the respective assessment periods. The supervisory system facilitated efficient EMS maintenance, thus reducing the risk of unsafe working conditions and production interruptions. The system also allowed maintenance personnel to improve the diagnostic process continually, thus aligning with the standards documented in ISO 50001:2011 (ISO, 2011) regarding continual improvement of electrical energy management initiatives. The new supervisory system is scalable, thus an ESCO can maintain the performance of a growing number of EMSs remotely. Results of this study support further supervisory system integration with compatible EMS technologies, and expansion to new EMS technologies. The modular design of the supervisory system provides a basis for the development of a cross-industry platform for maintaining EMS performance. / PhD (Computer and Electronic Engineering), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Terzic, Monika, Pitzalis, Francesca January 2017 (has links)
Abstract Background: Companies are under pressure to do more with less and at the same time they are affected by market needs such as customer demand, being sustainable and innovative in order to survive in the competitive market. There is a need to work with continuous improvements of the company performance considering the social, economic and environmental aspect. Research has shown that there is a relationship between lean management and corporate sustainability. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to understand to what extent the concepts of lean and sustainability are implemented in a startup and how they relate to each other. Method: The study is based on a qualitative research method with focus on the theory, which gave this thesis a deductive character. We wanted to develop a deeper understanding of how and when a startup can apply a lean method and how it can be sustainable. We applied a case study research method and the qualitative data was collected by conducting a document analysis with coding. Conclusion: The results show that the concepts of lean and sustainability are intertwined and that they can and should be considered in a startup - aiming to build a business model, responding to stakeholder demand, and improving the corporate sustainability performance.

Lengler, Letícia January 2008 (has links)
Over the past years, beekeeping has been standing out in the agribusiness context, especially after 2002, when Brazil changed its honey importer position to the exporter one. This fact makes it clear that there is a potential to the beekeeping activity development and its growing market. In this process of transformation, people leave the isolated way of acting and gather strength to minimize the individual difficulties and to find a bigger chance of succeeding in business. Therefore, we find beekeepers associations that aim to produce better results for the well being of the collectiveness, in which economic aspects as well as social, cultural and environmental ones are a required condition to reach these results. However, sustainability shows itself as a big challenge because beyond the comprehension of the balance among social, economic and environmental aspects, the development of actions in this direction requires collective efforts. In this way, it’s possible that people willing to undertake become influent agents in these actions development. Therefore, this research was applied to the managers of 18 beekeepers associations, aiming to analyze the sustainable performance of their associations as well as its relation to the manager’s entrepreneurial potential and cooperative performance. Although it was observed that the managers are entrepreneurs, the beekeeping is performed as a secondary activity which characterizes the lack of professionalism in the sector. Besides, the beekeeping associations are small, informal, with small honey production, restricted commercialization and a few actions in sustainability dimensions, being much more oriented to economic aspects. In addition, the managers realize they lack collective consciousness and associative capacity among the associates which reflects the studied associations’ fragility. Despite the difficulties, these association’s actions indicate a few possibilities to those who search for sustainable development.

Une approche évolutionniste de la performance des démarches managériales : le cas du TER Bourgogne / How the perceived value of managerial practicies can leverage the sustainable performance by using evolutionary theories : the case of french railway

Louis, Anne-Sophie 26 September 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this research work is to understand how the perceived value of managerial approaches can leverage the sustainable performance. That is the company's assessment as regards the value of the services it offers. The management practices taken into account are: Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental Management System, Quality, and Technological Innovations. They are designed 1) to improve the performance of the organization 2) to transmit a signal to stakeholders. We focus on the evolutionary theories. The empirical phase is based on the experimental methodology. It allows to highlights the real and unbiased preferences of the individuals which are difficult to assess with conventional methods. This phase is completed by six focus groups that control the hypotheses and allow us to go further into the analysis. On the theoretical level, through the evolutionary theory, we suggest an evolutionary analysis of the performance of the managerial approaches through the perceived value which, as far as I know, has never been proposed before. On the methodological level, the evolutionary approach can address the public organization in its organizational duality both as organizational behaviours place for players and as an institution supporting rules that must be consistent for both internal players (staff) and external players (users). As for the practical level, this research work offers realistic answers to policy makers and managers who are concerned by the efficiency of managerial actions and have to face the standard dissonance between "internal communication" and "external communication".

Modelo para avaliação de sustentabilidade da agroindústria de etanol / Model of sustainability assessment for ethanol fuel plant

Salles, Lauriberto da Silva 07 June 2012 (has links)
Orientador: Durval Rodrigues de Paula Junior / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Agrícola / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-20T17:37:28Z (GMT). This Thesis, reported to the subject of the production of a renewable agroenergy on a large scale - ethanol as fuel for automotive vehicles -, with the responsibility of preservating ecosystems and of contributing to the social welfare, as development national project and as component of the cast of global questions, demonstrated the formulated central hypothesis of that it is possible to make use of a methodology to select and to organize ideas and concepts related to ethanol plants and to link them to a practical system to measure and monitoring its consequent sustainable performances. It was imposed, as distinguishing for the developed methodology, that the actions and impacts selected of the ethanol plants and of its sector on the environmental, social and economic scope that they affect, must be importants and a proof of most stakeholders perception. E that, the data to get and to work were, compulsorily, only of knowledge and public access, characterizing an alternative executive model for "external" assessment of ethanol plants sustainability, constructed entirely apart of the enterprises, with complete independence and open administration. A strategical agenda was developed - the conceptual base of the methodology - applicable to the sector of production of ethanol from its ethanol plant units e, its elements, had allowed to demonstrate adequately the specific objectives of the Thesis. From a selection of themes and questions - key relating to ethanol plants were constructed nine indicators and applicable criteria had been selected to measure its sustainable performances - vinasse, water consumption, burning of straw, location, transparency, biodiversity, storage capacities, salaries, taxes -, involving 40 variables. To compose the indicator synthesis and the global index of sustainable performance, to communicate and to monitoring results, the free use sofware Dashboard of Sustainability was adopted. Eight of basins PCJ (Sao Paulo State) were submitted to sustainability estrategic agenda itens, revealing practical way to measure sustainable performances of these ethanol plants and to guide its relations with the external environment / Doutorado / Agua e Solo / Doutor em Engenharia Agrícola

Práticas de gestão do uso da energia e sua relação com o desempenho sustentável no setor mineral brasileiro / Energy management practices and it's relation with the sustainable performance in the brasilian mineral sector

Perlin, Ana Paula 07 March 2016 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / Energy is an essential commodity for the existence of industrial activities, however the lack of management of energy use can lead to numerous environmental, economic and social. Thus industries as energy-intensive play an essential role in the search of the preservation of the energy system. This study aimed to analyze the energy use management practices and its relationship to sustainable performance in the industries of the Brazilian mineral sector. Energy use management practices were measured by the model proposed by Liu et al. (2012). Next, the sustainable performance was identified from the performance indicators developed by the Global Reporting Initiative - GRI (2006, 2010b, 2014). The study is characterized as quantitative and was conducted from conducting a survey research with industries linked to the Brazilian Mining Institute. It was found that the practices regarding the use of existing energy management in companies are related to periodic verification of the impacts of their activities on the environment and encouraging daily energy-saving practices. By contrast the energy use management practices still not widespread in companies are adopting the ISO 50001 and the existence of an Internal Commission for Energy Conservation (CICE). Overall, from the analyzes performed it can be seen that there are positive associations between factors related to energy use management practices and sustainable performance. Thus, it was identified that management practices of energy use involving the integration of energy efficiency in organizations and monitoring of energy use management relate directly to the performance of enterprises, in social, economic and environmental terms.
