Do American Psychological Association (APA) or Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) Accreditations Make a Difference? A Look at GLB Competency Among Faculty and Graduate Students

Castro, Veronica 01 January 2019 (has links)
A lack of knowledge and training on the topic of gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons (GLB) in mental health graduate programs can lead to a culture of ignorance and ineffective treatment for a subset of the population. Multicultural competency is defined as having self-awareness of one's own values and biases, knowledge, and skills to work with a given population; and it is important in order to ensure appropriate mental healthcare. The purpose of the current study was to identify if there is a difference in GLB competency among graduate students and faculty (dependent variables) from mental health programs that are accredited by organizations like the APA and CACREP versus those from nonaccredited programs (independent variables). The key theoretical foundation that grounded this study was Multicultural Counseling and Therapy Theory (MCT). The research questions explored herein center on whether GLB competency differs between graduate students and faculty from accredited programs versus those from nonaccredited programs. Results of this quantitative comparative research design study were derived via a multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) procedure in order to compare mean scores among the four groups. Results identified a significant difference between the groups in skills and knowledge; however, mean averages for graduate students from accredited programs (Skills M = 2.54, Knowledge M = 3.83) were below four, indicating little to no skills/knowledge. In order to optimize mental health treatment for the GLB community, graduate students in mental health programs must be exposed to GLB counseling training curriculum. The implications for social change focus on policy and accreditation standards set forth by APA and CACREP accrediting bodies.

Use of Asphalt Pavement Analyzer to Study In-Service Hot Mix Asphalt Performance

Smith, Benjamin Joshua 07 August 2004 (has links)
Permanent deformation or rutting is a major hot mix asphalt (HMA) performance distress. Implementation of the Superior Performing Asphalt Pavement (Superpave) HMA mix design system was due, in part, to limit HMA rutting. Along with the Superpave system, performance testing equipment was developed to evaluate rutting potential; however, this equipment proved largely ineffective. As a result, agencies developed their own performance equipment, with the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) currently being used by many agencies for HMA rutting evaluation. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is utilizing the APA to evaluate HMA performance, but does not currently have established pass/fail criteria. Field rutting analysis and coring were conducted for twentyour pavements throughout Mississippi to determine in-service performance. Asphalt pavement analyzer testing was conducted on field cores and lab prepared specimens to evaluate mix characteristic influence on rutting and to develop APA failure criteria.

Evaluating Pavement Response and Performance with Different Simulative Tests

Huang, Yucheng 30 June 2017 (has links)
Simulative tests refer to the Full-scale accelerated pavement testing (APT) and laboratory wheel tracking testing, which are widely used for evaluation of pavement responses and performance under a controlled and accelerated damage conditions in a compressed limited time. This dissertation focuses on comparative evaluations under ALF, MMLS 3 and APA tests, in terms of rut depth, strain response, seismic stiffness, and contact stress using both experimental and numerical simulation results. Test slabs extracted from the ALF test lanes, are trafficked with the MMLS3 under comparable environmental conditions at laboratory in Virginia Tech. Some specimens were cut from the slabs for APA tests at VTRC. It is found that the monitored parameters yielded by the MMLS 3 test were comparable to the related full-scale ALF test results in terms of intrinsic material characteristics and pavement performance. The wireless sensor network based on Internet of things technology is implemented in laboratory for the MMLS 3 test, which provides a convenient solution for researchers on long-term observation and monitoring without being physically presented. The numerical simulations of ALF, MMLS 3 and APA in ABAQUS are used to supplement the investigation on the pavement response and performance under repeated moving loading. The viscoelastic-viscoplastic model is adopted to characterize rate and temperature dependent properties of asphalt mixtures. The 3D finite element models are capable of predicting the pavement response at critical locations while underestimates the rut depth because the permanent deformation induced by volumetric change cannot be represented in simulation. According to the test results, a power law function fits well for the accumulated rut depth versus number of load repetitions before the material reaches tertiary stage in MMLS 3 test. The rut depth development of APA tests exhibits a close-to-liner regression with number of load cycles after the initial 500 load repetitions. A regression model for predicting rut depth after 500 loads has a satisfying agreement with the experimental measurement. The calibrated MEPDG fatigue model can be used to estimate the allowable load repetitions in MMLS 3 trafficking. Besides, the effects of tire configuration, tire pressure, axle load amplitude, wheel load speed and temperature on pavement responses are investigated in this dissertation using the finite element model. It is concluded that MMLS 3 is an effective, economic and reliable trafficking tool to characterize rutting and fatigue performance of pavement materials with due regard to the relative structures. MMLS 3 test can be employed as the screen testing for establishing full-scale testing protocols as desired or required, which will significantly enhance economics of APT testing. / Ph. D.

Nuevo, Karolina Morales Barrio 29 April 2019 (has links)
A APA registrou a maior abundância (878 espécimes) e maior riqueza (37 táxons). Entretanto, a Borracharia obteve alta riqueza, baixa abundância e a maior diversidade. An. (Ker.) cruzii, Cx. (Cux.) sp, Cx. (Mel.) vaxus, Li. durhami, Wy. (Prl.) confusa e Wy. / Flaviviruses are transmitted by mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) that take refuge in remnants of the Atlantic Forest. These green areas correspond to Conservation Units and urban parks which are spread throughout the metropolitan region of São Paulo. This study was carried out in order to identify the Culicidae fauna that circulate in Capivari-Monos Environmental Protection Area (APA), located in the South area of the city of São Paulo, and in Cantareira State Park (PEC), North area of the same municipality and to investigate natural Flaviviruses infection in this sampled Culicidae fauna. It was also proposed to relate the variety, quantity and identity of the Flaviviruses detected with patterns of richness, abundance and diversity of mosquito assemblages. Fourteen collections were carried out monthly at four collection sites in the APA and three in the PEC, all sites with different levels of anthropogenic intervention, during March 2016 to April 2017. CDC automatic traps (with attraction of CO2 and lactic acid) were installed in the canopy and on ground. The sampling effort was equivalent for all the points, and two traps were installed at each point (one in the canopy and the other on ground), with 18 hours of sampling, allowing sampling culicidae of daytime, morning and evening twilight, and nightlyl habits. The specimens were carried alive to the Public Health Laboratory of the School of Public Health of the University of São Paulo, were cryopreserved at a -70ºC temperature, identified morphologically and grouped in pools (with up to 10 individuals). The pools were submitted to the virus isolation technique in cell culture tissue (C6 / 36), followed by the indirect immunofluorescence test. The positive pools were submitted to the RT-qPCR reaction and, subsequently, sequenced. Two similarity trees were made only to confirm Flaviviruses infection. In total, 1216 specimens of culicidae were sampled (13 genera), and the richness was 42 taxa. In addition to APA recorded the highest abundance (878 specimens) and also highest richness (37 taxa). Cachoeira was the collection site in APA that showed the greatest richness and abundance as well, however, with the lowest diversity. In addition, Borracharia obtained high richness, low abundance and highest diversity. PEC sampled 338 specimens and the richness was 23 taxa. Among the collection sites of the PEC, Pinheirinho Trail showed the highest richness and also abundance. An. (Ker.) cruzii, Cx. (Cux.) sp, Cx. (Mel.) vaxus, Li. durhami, Wy. (Prl.) confusa and Wy. (Pho.) theobaldi were detected with natural Flaviviruses infection. The sequencing analyzes revealed ZIKV infection in An. (Ker.) cruzii, Li. durhami and Wy. (Prl.) confusa, and DENV-2 infection in Cx. (Cux.) sp and Cx. (Mel.) vaxus. It has concluded that the richness, abundance and also diversity are related to each other and, together, influenced the detection of species of culicidae naturally infected by Flaviviruses, which were detected in species from collection sites whose richness and abundance were high. About quantity and variety of Flaviviruses, these were also influenced by the three factors on nature. It was not possible to correlate the identity of the Flaviviruses with the three factors since the species detected with natural infection by these viruses are not indicated as potential vectors. Moreover, abundance and diversity appeared to have an inverse relation.
