This thesis concerns the research on Li Yu under the perspectives of regional literary studies. Li Yu (1611? - after 1711), also referred to as Li Xuanyu, is a renowned Suzhou playwright widely recognized in the history of Chinese drama. Since 1920s, researches on Li Yu have yielded significant results. However, as “realism, “didacticism and “folk color have become the core concepts in the interpretations of the works of Suzhou playwrights, study on how regional factors have influenced these dramatists has long been omitted. This thesis tries to trace how “place shaped the production of Li Yu’s plays. In other words, the study investigates the role of “Suzhou in the formation of Li Yu’s idea, the writing of the play, and the representation including performance on stage. This research also sheds light on the connection between Li Yu and local culture, as well as the interaction between the dramatist and his audience. / This thesis consists of seven chapters. The first chapter provides a literature review on the discussion of Li Yu, explains the motivation for this work and outlines the organization of the thesis. The second chapter explicates the biographical background of Li Yu, with an introduction of imperial examinations, domestic troupes and the idea of “urban recluse, so as to illustrate the importance of Li Yu’s stay in Suzhou before re-interpreting his works. The third to the sixth chapters involve close readings of Li Yu’s texts. The third chapter focuses on Li Yu’s early plays, namely, A Handful of Snow [Yipeng xue], The Gate Separating Humans and Beasts [Renshou guan], The Everlasting Union [Yong tuanyuan], Winning the Prize Courtesan [Zhan huakui]). Through analyzing these plays, this chapter portrays how geographical and social forces affected Li Yu’s early dramas and his later works. The fourth chapter examines Li Yu’s prominent drama Registers of the Pure and Loyal [Qingzhong pu] by addressing the problem of identity and historical narratives, especially how “Suzhou was employed by the author in the famous political incident “Kaidu zhi bian, that happened in 1626, and in the cyclic recurrence of historical events. The fifth chapter illustrates the journey of Suzhou literatus Huang Xiangjian from Suzhou to Yunnan to search for his father and his return with him (1653-1661), and discerns how emotional power among local citizens contributed to the composition of Li’s play, Union Across Ten Thousand Miles [Wanli yuan]. The sixth chapter explores the reception of Li Yu’s plays, by studying the performances of Beating the Officer from Union Across Ten Thousand Miles. Since this play was staged in local theatres, how its stagecraft developed and transformed across time and space is traced in this chapter. “Political consciousness is key to understanding the costumes and Suzhou dialect used in these performances. The seventh chapter is a conclusion summarizing the above arguments and providing insights into areas that await future explorations. / Through case studies that are interrelated, this thesis demonstrates how “Suzhou was vital to Li Yu’s literary production. Living in Suzhou, Li assimilated local history, contemporary events, dialect with special idioms, geographical landscapes, folk customs, and family histories, so as to interact with the interests of local audience. On the one hand, this interaction has been revealed in my study of various dramas written by Li Yu; on the other hand, this interaction in my view, represents his self identity and local experience. The aim of this research on Li Yu is not limited to the eminent playwright. It is believed that this thesis can also provide information that contributes to the study of Suzhou playwrights, regional literature in the Ming-Qing era, as well as the history of Chinese drama. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / "2012 nian 2 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 161-172). / Abstract in Chinese and English. / Chen Yajun.

EFFECTIVE CONCEPT CLASSES OF PAC AND PACi INCOMPARABLE DEGREES, JOINS AND EMBEDDING OF DEGREES

Senadheera, Dodamgodage Gihanee Madumalika 01 August 2022 (has links)
The ordering of concept classes under PAC reducibility is nonlinear, even when restricted to particular concrete examples. We construct two effective concept classes of incomparable PAC degrees to show that there exist incomparable PAC degrees, analogous to incomparable Turing degrees. The non-learnability of concept classes in the PAC learning model is explained by the existence of PAC incomparable degrees. It was necessary to deal with the size of an effective concept class thus we propose a method to compute the size of the effective concept class using Kolmogorov complexity. To define the jump operator for PACi degrees the join of effective concept classes is constructed and explores the possibility of embedding known degrees to PACi or PAC degrees. If an embedding exists it will enable proving properties of known degrees for PACi and PAC degrees without explicitly proving them.

The Confident Amazon: Warrior-Women in the Collected Works of Christine de Pizan

Appel, Nona Faye 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and discuss the relationship between the images and texts concerning Amazons and warrior-women in the collected works of Christine de Pizan. It evaluates Christine's interpretation of the ancient story in light of her career as an author and publisher, and it compares her imagery to other representations of Amazons and warrior-women. This study indicates that Christine reworked the myth in a way that reflects her positive of women and her desire to influence the queen of France, Isabeau de Baviere, who was the original owner of the manuscript.

Deacon, Anneli 14 April 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Latin) / This study is focused on the different ways the character of the Emperor Nero is depicted by the biographer Suetonlus and the historiographer Tacitus. The study is Introduced with an historical survey of the life of Nero. Thereupon a discussion follows on the life experiences of the authors, Suetonius and Tacitus, as well as the different style and genre used by each, and suggestions on how their writings could have been influenced by these factors. Two aspects of Nero's life are discussed at length, namely his relationship with his mother (and issues relating to that). as well as his interest in and practising of the arts (focusing on Nero as a poet, singer and charioteer). The discussion of these topics is done in the following manner: firstiy Suetonius' account of the events are given, followed by the account by Tacitus. These versions are then compared and where different, the candidate suggests possible reasons for the difference of opinion or presentation between the authors. Various characteristics of the Emperor Nero are referred to. The main conclusions can be categorised into three sections: - First and foremost the authors had different life experiences. Suetonius held various secretarial positions at the court of Caesar Hadrian which SUbsequently influenced his writings. He Was not however a senator or interested In politics and military affairs, which explains the fact that he does not write about political upheavals and does not contribute political motivations for certain actions of characters under discussion. Tacitus on the contrary, was a senator during the reign of Domitian. The atrocities committed by the Emperor and the slowly diminishing power of the Senate influenced the mind and writings of Tacitus to a great extent.

Christians and Jerusalem in the Fourth Century CE: a Study of Eusebius of Caesarea, Cyril of Jerusalem, and the Bordeaux Pilgrim

Green, Stephen David 12 July 2018 (has links)
This thesis addresses Constantine's developments of the Roman province of Palaestina. It analyzes two important Christian bishops, Eusebius of Caesarea and Cyril of Jerusalem, and one nameless Christian traveler, the Bordeaux pilgrim, to illuminate how fourth-century Christians understood these developments. This study examines the surviving writings of these Christian authors: the Bordeaux Itinerary, Cyril's Catechetical Lectures, and Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History, Onomasticon, Preparation of the Gospel, Proof of the Gospel, and the Life of Constantine, and the archaeological remains of several Constantinian basilicas to interpret their views of the imperial attentions that were being poured into the land. Together these accounts provide views of fourth-century Palaestina and Jerusalem that when combined more fully illuminate how Christians understood Constantine's Holy Land policy. This study focuses on Constantine's developments of the city of Jerusalem, primarily the so-called Triad of Churches (The church of the Nativity, the Eleona, and the Holy Sepulchre) built in and around the city. It likewise considers the countryside of Palaestina outside of Jerusalem. While some Christians were resistant to the developments of Jerusalem, our sources reveal how many Christians supported, or at least desired to experience, the newly developing Christian Holy Land. This thesis argues that most of the discrepancies over the city of Jerusalem between our sources, especially Eusebius and Cyril, developed from long-standing political tensions between the cities of Caesarea and Jerusalem. The Bordeaux pilgrim, on the other hand, traveled across the Roman Empire to see and experience the developing sites throughout the land with no interest in local political debates. With this added perspective we can see how Christians, separated from the positions of church fathers, experienced the developing Holy Land.
