Social mix is a highly contested global trend in urban planning as it can result in some of the same negative social consequences as gentrification, such as displacement and social polarization. In 2014, the City of Vancouver approved a social mix strategy for one of its low-income neighbourhoods in their Downtown Eastside (DTES) Local Area Plan (LAP). With this plan, the city aimed to increase mid- and high-income residents in a predominately low-income neighbourhood. Included were Social Impact Objectives to mitigate harm to existing low-income residents, and assurances the approach would benefit all community members. The LAP provoked questions of whether social mix could, indeed, benefit low-income residents. This qualitative single-case research study investigates the experiences of residents with low incomes in the DTES neighbourhood, three years after the implementation of the LAP. The study is grounded in an anti-oppressive framework, with attention to anti-colonization and the unique experiences at the intersection of gender and colonial oppression. Three key findings emerged from neighbourhood observations and semi-structured focus groups conducted in 2017 with twenty-four research participants. First, experiences of displacement in the DTES were reported; second, experiences of social polarization within their neighbourhood were described; and, third, most participants demonstrated strong community connections despite the social mix changes. The findings suggest low-income residents did not benefit from social mix and, if further displacement and polarization were to continue, the negative impact on low-income residents would increase. / Graduate

The aim of this thesis is to research the field of water distribution system monitoring and modeling such system. In the next section the thesis describes a part of the water distribution system which is located in Pardubice district, specifically south of town Přelouč. With knowledge from the done research a hydraulic model will be done. This model made in EPANET interface will be calibrated and verified using data, which was acquired by the administrator of the system VAK Pardubice a.s. Afterwards new pipelines will be added to simulate the future situation accordingly to the area plans of the cencerned towns. Furthermore another aim is to simulate the requirements made towards the water distribution system in the future in case all the areas in area plan will be completely used. This will result into creation of forward looking hydraulic model which will show possible weaknesses of the water distribution system. In case of any shortcomings, according measures will be designed for future use.

This professional project provides a much needed draft update to the existing Area Plan for North Ventura Avenue (last amended in 1990), an unincorporated area of the County that falls under the City of Ventura’s sphere of influence. New goals, policies and programs have been provided to supplement the goals, policies and programs of the current countywide General Plan for Ventura County (adopted in 2005). The supplemental goals, policies and programs proposed in this draft update apply specifically to North Ventura Avenue, and account for a pending annexation of the area by the City of Ventura. The overall aim of this project was to provide the Ventura County Planning Division with a draft update to the existing North Ventura Avenue Area Plan that reflects modern planning practice and theory. Sustainable growth and development for the area are the underlying goals of this proposed draft update. Reducing auto-dependency through the proposed adoption of a ‘mixed-use specific plan’ land use category represents the most pertinent recommendation of this draft update in aiming to achieve sustainable growth and development of the area in the future.

The processes to develop community plans share certain standard activities and stages while remaining distinctive and without pre-scripted procedures. This study documents the process that yielded the South Broad Street Corridor Plan June 2012 draft. The objective is to present the decision-making processes and their connections to the final plan document along with the plan document itself.
