The Effects of Perceived Sex-Appropriateness of a Task on Performance of Selected Sports Skills

Harris, Victoria L. (Victoria Lou) 05 1900 (has links)
Recent literature reveals that sex differences in performance actually might be reflections of sex differences in perceptions about the sex-appropriateness and the masculinity and femininity of certain activities. Therefore, this study was designed to determine the effects of perceived sex-appropriateness of a task upon performance of selected sport skills.

Decision making skill and complex problem solving in team sports

Stevenson, David M. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis aimed to enhance understanding of the nature of knowledge bases possessed by elite sports performers which underpin perceptual-cognitive and decision making skills. Two main theories were considered; Active Control of Thought (ACT*) and Representational Redescription (RR). The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the anticipatory ability of elite and non-elite players in football and hockey. The results indicated that elite players in both sports were quicker and more accurate in their expectation of pass destination. Study 2 aimed to understand the extent to which knowledge is transferable. The results indicated that elite players’ knowledge is relatively domain specific although some elements of underlying task strategy may transfer. The objective of Study 3 was to explore the means by which elite and non-elite players in football and hockey identify and differentiate between possible decisions. Results showed elite players’ rationale was based on deeper theoretical principles whilst non-experts utilised relatively superficial information and naïve theories. Study 4 focussed on problem representations of elite and non-elite football players. Results revealed elite players’ representations were more pertinent, connected and articulated in a more effective manner. Overall, the findings from the current thesis provide advanced understanding of the knowledge bases responsible for perceptual-cognitive and decision making skill, and such understanding may assist attempts to enhance athletes’ performance and support future research.

The effects three different anterior knee pain treatments have on strength and performance

Monteleone, Gina Marie January 1999 (has links)
The purposes of this study is to determine: (a) the relationship between the dependant variables, (b) the relationship between the Borg pain scale and the performance tests, (c) the difference in performance between involved and uninvolved extremities, and (d) the effects of the three different therapeutic exercise treatments on selected performance tests and pain free isometric strength testing. Fifty subjects with physician diagnosed anterior knee pain (AKP), completed initial performance testing and 14 subjects completed initial testing, therapy and six weeks later final performance testing. The 14 subjects were randomly assigned to one of three therapeutic exercise treatment groups. The performance tests included; pain free isometric strength tests (90, 60, 45, and 15 degrees knee flexion), stair test, timed hop, triple hop, crossover hop, Figure 8 and Borg pain scale rating for each performance test. The results indicated a significant correlation between performance tests and pain free isometric strength tests. There was no relationship indicated between the performance tests, Borg pain scale ratings. The contrast between the injured and uninjured extremities performance test values of the fifty subjects that completed the initial testing indicated no significant (p< 0.05) difference. The results of this study indicated that there was no significant difference between the therapeutic exercise treatment groups. In conclusion, the three anterior knee pain treatments had no effect on strength and performance. / School of Physical Education

The anthropometric and fitness characteristics of South African female basketball players

Mtsweni, Lungile Blessed January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Sport Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / Basketball in South Africa (SA) is viewed as a secondary and social sport, even at national level (Radovic, 2010). The South African female national basketball team is ranked 70 out of 73 countries globally (FIBA, 2014a). There are many possible reasons for the poor success of the team; one contributing factor could be their anthropometric and fitness characteristics. To date, there have been no published research studies investigating the anthropometric and fitness characteristics of female basketball players in SA. The primary aim of this study was to examine the anthropometric and fitness characteristics of SA female basketball players, in three groups: players in university, provincial leagues and those in the national squad. The secondary aim was to investigate the structures in place for managing and monitoring the strength and conditioning of these players. This research study is the first to examine and compare anthropometric and fitness characteristics of female basketball players at different playing levels in SA.
