Proposal for a school building, within the framework of Kulturskolan Stockholm. The site is Älvsjö, on a property which today belongs to the Stockholm International Fairs. A central motif in the project is the importance given to the contact between the school and the space of the city as well as the possibility that, in and through a building, strengthen the public space in a growing part of the city. Through location and direction the building establishes opportunities for a new public park, on a poorly used part of the property. The rooms of different activities are spread out in three volumes around a glassed atrium, which constitutes both the central space of the building and the connection between the school and the city.

Hållbarhet med atrium : Studentbostäder på CampusKinsander, Timothy, Styf, Katarina January 2018 (has links)
In this degree project, an existing proposal of a new building will contain both student apartments, but also offices to be reviewed and improved. This building will be established on the eastern side of Mittuniversitetet in Östersund Campus. The effort is to try to find a better solution to the existing proposal using the atrium as a central point for the social sustainability of the building. Using the calculation, energy calculation and architectural program, three proposals will be made. These proposals will then be compared to each other to determine the best design for this building. The design that proves to be the best has a clever solution to how an airborne corridor runs through the entire building along with the atrium. The atrium will let in a lot of light to the residents and will give a comfortable sense of community and desire to interact. This design also has 30 percent lower energy consumption since the atrium reduces heat supply during the summer. The work focuses on the student apartments to be produced and the price from calculations does not report costs other than the body. The offices planned in the building are reported only as an empty space. The result shows that one of the proposals proposed is about one million Swedish kronor cheaper to produce than the other atrium buildings and has a 30 percent lower energy consumption then a standard house. The thesis also shows that there is potential for the proposed proposal to be cheaper in operation and thus earn the extra production cost that an atrium building implies. / <p>Betyg 2018-06-05</p>

Performance-based Design Analysis of Smoke Management System in Buildings with Large Space and AtriaLee, Hsun-Ku 10 July 2001 (has links)
In Taiwan, the fire code is prescriptive in nature and is inappropriate to be utilized in buildings with large spaces and atria, where performance-based fire safety design method is applied. It is the goal of this dissertation to develop a design guide for this application.
Through literature survey and theoretical analysis, the important parameters were induced, including: plume transport time lag, ceiling jet transport time lag, smoke entrainment rate, mechanical and natural ventilation rate. To predict smoke behavior and descending rate accurately, algebraic equations and field model were both used to calculate and compare with experimental result so that its applicability can be evaluated.
Furthermore, a full-scale experiment has been conducted in the USTC campus to validate that the field model can predict the smoke behavior and descending rate accurately.
Finally, the calculation models developed in this study were compiled into a guideline for fire engineering performance-based designs. Design examples were also demonstrated to explain its procedure in engineering application.

NUMERICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF THE INDOOR THERMAL ENVIRONMENT IN ATRIA AND OF THE BUOYANCY- DRIVEN VENTILATION IN A SIMPLE ATRIUM BUILDINGHussain, SHAFQAT 23 July 2012 (has links)
In recent years Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been extensively used in the study of the indoor environment and the thermal comfort conditions for the design of modern buildings, however, there remains the need to thoroughly evaluate the accuracy of the results given by CFD methods. In the present work, numerical investigations of the indoor thermal environment in the atria of two existing buildings and in a simple three-storey atrium building design have been undertaken using CFD techniques.
The initial work involved the evaluation of various turbulence models and a radiation model used in CFD simulations for the prediction of the thermal environment in atria of different geometrical configurations in two buildings for which experimental data is available. The airflow patterns and temperature distributions were determined, under both forced and hybrid ventilation conditions and thermal comfort conditions were evaluated. The numerical predictions were compared with the available experimental measurements and, in general, good agreement was obtained between the numerical and experimental results.
After the evaluation of the adequacy of available turbulence models and the validation of the accuracy of the CFD model used, a simple full-scale three-storey atrium building was modeled to explore the potential of using buoyancy-driven natural ventilation. The validated CFD model was used to determine the ventilation flow rates, airflow patterns, and temperature distributions in the building. The dynamic effect of the thermal mass of the external walls on the performance of the building was also investigated using transient CFD simulations.
Atria with various geometrical configurations were studied in order to investigate the effect of atrium design changes on the air flow and temperature distributions in the simple atrium building considered. A parametric study was carried out to assess the sensitivity of the ventilation performance to the change in various geometric and solar parameters. On the basis of this parametric study, a few changes were carried out in the design of the building to examine their effect on ventilation performance. Finally, the use of night ventilation in the atrium building was explored and it was found that night ventilation can be increased by using hot water circulation in the chimney walls. / Thesis (Ph.D, Mechanical and Materials Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2012-07-22 12:57:00.947

Hotel AtriumAlp, Melissa Maria January 2015 (has links)
Hotel Atrium is built in the small town Mariefred, which is a seasonal tourist resort. The hotel offers public functions for both hotel residents and residents of Mariefred. It is in the hotel that meetings between residents and guest occurs, between acquaintances and strangers , between new and old faces . The hotel is to be open and accessible to all, so it was important with public functions on the ground floor. Light, meetings, sight lines and movements , that characterizes the site, are found in the hotel's atrium that gives the sought light and sight lines. The strict form has a playful expression in the facade to create an interesting addition to the site and a contrasting relationship to the central oval room. Around the atrium there are exterior corridors to which the lobby is the central room that you can overlook from the balconies and take part of the life there, inspired by Arabic and cloister architecture.
