Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University. / Many of Bach's greatest masterpieces contain movements based on music from earlier compositions. These parodies of previously composed works seemed to require as much, if not more, ingenuity than that required for the composition of fresh musical material. A thorough study, then, of Bach's technique of parody should provide new insight into his music and his methods of composition. All changes have been listed and classified in an appendix so that references, other than those cited in the text, can easily be made to the published work. In 2003, Jan Bach completed his monumental Concerto for Tuba and Chamber Orchestra. This concerto requires unique performance techniques and technical skills unlike the majority of available tuba repertoire. In addition to these techniques, the guide explores the influence of popular songs, jazz/rock/funk styles, implied humor, and personal experience through an interview with the composer.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of the investigation of Johann Ludwig Bach's seventeen liturgical cantatas and the "Trauermusik" was to establish their position within the historic development of the German sacred cantata between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to study their stylistic and formal characteristics, and to present an objective picture of the work of this generally unknown cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach. The study of these works was made from microfilms of the original manuscripts now in the libraries of Berlin and Marburg. Texts and chorale melodies were traced through examination of the Bible, collections of sacred poetry, hymnals, and chorale melody collections. Works of a similar character by contemporary composers were analytically examined for comparison and to help place Johann Ludwig's compositions in the overall historic development of the cantata form. Historical and documentary data were obtained from numerous literary sources dating form the early eighteenth century to the present. [Truncated]
