Stability analysis of nonlinear coupled barge motions

The present research investigates nonlinear barge motions through analyses of coupled multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) deterministic and stochastic models. Roll-Heave-Sway and other lower-ordered models are developed to predict the nonlinear motions and analyze the stability of a class of ship-to-shore cargo barges. The governing equations of motion contain coupled rigid body Roll-Heave-Sway relations, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic terms. The rigid body relationships are a part of the general six-degree-of-freedom model. Hydrostatic terms include effects of the barge's sharp edge and of relative Roll-Heave states. Hydrodynamic terms are in a "Morison" form. The characteristics of the excitation wave field are based on linear wave theory. Predictive capabilities of the Roll-Heave-Sway and the Roll-Heave models are investigated. System parameters are calibrated to match experimental test results using several regular wave test cases. Potential theory predictions provide initial estimates of several key system parameters. With the identified system parameters, numerical predictions obtained from time domain simulations of both models are compared with experimental test results for a random wave case, and compared to each other to investigate the coupling effects of sway on roll and heave motions. Reliability against capsizing of a barge in random seas is investigated using stochastic analysis techniques. With the Markov process assumption, the barge response density to random waves is derived as a solution to the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The path integral solution technique is employed to obtain numerical solutions for the Roll-Heave and the Roll models. A quasi-2DOF model is introduced to improve the accuracy of the 1DOF Roll model. The reliability of a barge in a variety of sea conditions is analyzed as a first passage problem using the quasi-2DOF model. Mean times to reach specified capsizing probabilities for a barge operating in sea states 1 through 9 are obtained. / Graduation date: 2003

Modelling, validation and simulation of multi-degree-of-freedom nonlinear stochastic barge motions

Recent developments in estimation of the survivability of a U.S. Navy transport barge in random seas are extended to improve accuracy. The single Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) model of a extreme roll response of a barge used in previous research is replaced by a 3-DOF roll-heave-sway model to include linear and nonlinear static and kinematic coupling between roll, sway and heave. The predominant nonlinearity in the model arises in an improved approximation of the roll righting moment and heave buoyant restoring force by coupling roll with heave. Kinematic coupling is introduced by allowing extreme displacements and rotations in the barge response. System coefficients in the 3-DOF roll-heave-sway model and a simpler 2-DOF roll-heave model are identified by comparing time domain simulations with measured physical model tests of barge motions. Predictions of the 3-DOF and 2-DOF models are compared to measured test data for the case of random waves. Monte Carlo simulations of the equations of motions are performed to predict the reliability of the barge in an operational sea state for a specified mission duration. Use of parallel computer processing is found to make this a viable option for stability estimations as we move into the next century. The stochastic nature of the ocean waves are modeled via filtered white noise. Estimations of the joint probability of the barge responses are presented after application of density estimation kernels. Both the 3-DOF roll-heave-sway model and 2-DOF roll-heave model are tested and compared. Last, examples are provided of some observed nonlinear behavior of the barge motions for variation in damping or ocean wave amplitude. Transient and intermittent chaotic responses are observed for deterministic input waves and quasiperiodic cases are illustrated. / Graduation date: 1996

Use of Macro Basalt Fibre Concrete for Marine Applications

Deterioration of concrete structures due to the corrosion of embedded steel is a well-known universal problem. Norway with its numerous bridges, ports, offshore and floating structures along its coastline, is also encountered with corrosion degradation. The harsh environment of the Norwegian Sea regarding its low temperature, wind, and waves, makes the design and construction of marine structures more demanding. In recent years, usage of sustainable composite materials in the field of structural engineering has been rising. The usage of natural fibre reinforced polymer materials in the form of reinforcement bars or macro fibres with a low density, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance, gives us better choices for the design and construction of marine structures. Our knowledge about the fibre reinforced self-compacting concrete has increased as a result of introducing it as a building material some decades ago. However, more research is still needed when it comes to the application of new types of fibres. This thesis is a result of this need, whereby the author has done two series of experimental programmes regarding the subject. In the first series, the flow characteristics of fresh state, conventional and self-compacting macro basalt fibre concrete were studied. In the second series, mechanical properties of high performance and medium strength macro basalt fibre concrete including the post-cracking behaviour, compressive strength and electrical resistivity were in focus. The findings were presented in three appended papers and the extended summary composing this thesis. Additionally, the thesis presents an overview of the design procedure of floating concrete structures and the possibility of using macro basalt fibre concrete via a case study. The author’s literature review shows that basalt fibres have an adequate resistance against alkali environment of the concrete matrix and corrosive environment of seawater. / <p>QC 20160607</p>

É elaborada uma proposta de procedimentos de projetos de comboios fluviais adaptados às condições existentes das vias navegáveis, a partir de uma visão ampliada da necessidade de obtenção de menores custos de transporte, com níveis adequados de segurança e de respeito ao meio ambiente. Uma análise das inter-relações técnicas entre hidrovias e embarcações, assim como dos condicionantes e implicações do conceito de embarcações adaptadas às vias navegáveis, orientou a elaboração do modelo. Este foi estruturado em módulos, com o objetivo de reproduzir, um a um, os fatores mais importantes que influenciam a eficiência, a segurança e o nível de interferência ambiental do transporte de cargas por comboios. Um programa computacional foi desenvolvido como instrumento de aplicação do modelo, consolidando os procedimentos propostos para a escolha das melhores alternativas de projeto e de operação de comboios. Resultados experimentais com comboios em escala real e com modelos em tanques de provas, foram utilizados para validação dos procedimentos adotados. Dados de acidentes com comboios em várias hidrovias do mundo foram utilizados como bases para avaliações de risco. O modelo foi aplicado aos casos de transportes de soja pela hidrovia Tietê-Paraná e pelo rio Araguaia, exemplificando as formas de análise e de escolha das alternativas de soluções de projeto. Ao final, os resultados obtidos comprovaram a utilidade da adoção de um enfoque mais abrangente do processo de projeto de comboios fluviais. / It is proposed a procedure model for design of barges push-tow adapted to waterway actual conditions, with the purpose of minimize transportation costs but always making verifications of navigation safety and ambient interferences levels. An analysis of inter-relations on inland waterways and cargo ships and, also, detailed conditionings and implications of waterway adapted ships concept, was used for model elaboration. It was structured in blocks to reproduce, one to one, the most important factors that modify efficiency, safety and environmental interference levels of barges push-tow cargo transportation. A computational program was developed to consolidate the proposed model and to apply procedures to choose best design and operational alternatives. Results of full scale and towing tank tests with push-tows were used to verify the mathematical and semi-empirical models. Barges push-tows accidents data from waterways of the world was used as risk model basis. To evaluate its effectiveness, the model was applied to bulk grain transportation cases by Tietê-Paraná waterway and by Araguaia river. The results shows that the special emphasis on three factors (efficiency, safety and ambient) improves the quality of barges push-tow design process.
