The Comparative Study of Traditional Instruction and Web-based Instruction¡X from The Exploration of Teaching Media¡BClassroom Management and Assessment

Abstract Because the Internet reaches beyond borders and the World Wide Web (WWW) blossoms everywhere, taking such convenience, instructors and students may participate teaching and learning activities anytime in anyplace. Thus, the traditional instruction has been changed tremendously, not only in the way that knowledge is presented, but also in the way that instructions and feedbacks are exchanged, as well as in the environment that has been changed from concrete classrooms to the virtual world. Instruction via the Internet, or the Web-based Instruction, has been a trend. This new instruction has impacts the traditional instruction a lot. Therefore, we¡¦d like to discuss whether the Web-based instruction could replace the traditional instruction. This research refers the comparison method from Bereday, George Z.F. 1920-1983, also makes documents analysis to compare and evaluate the characteristics between the traditional instruction and the Web-based instruction in teaching media, class management and assessment. We expect this research and its suggestions may provide a reference for the development of the Web-based instruction and for the improvement of the traditional instruction in Taiwan. Thus, our future instruction may take advantages from both the Web-based instruction and the traditional way.

Service Portal for Jini Federations

Today, there are two different ways to use computer. The first one is using standalone applications and another is using network services. Because user must install all program files into personal computer for standalone application, the cost of installing and updating application is very expensive. Online service is always constructed by using the model of a mainframe, so information is still administered in the centralized database and every user's operations must be processed in the web server. Because of the mature network infrastructure, people can use different ways to connect to Internet. More and more applications are changed to online services. That is also the ideal of Sun, "The Network is The Computer", and Sun announces Jini technology for the ideal. By using Jini technology, service providers can construct and deploy their services easily and users can find these services easily. Jini technology is based on Java, so Jini has many advantages of Java. Besides, there is a concept of federation in Jini technology. People can share resources in the same federation easily, but can not access resources in the other federation. In the other words, federations can not communicate with each other. In order to solve this problem, we design Service Portal for Jini federations, that let Jini federations can share their resources with others. In the Service Portal for Jini federations, we use "Service Proxy Forwarding" mechanism to forward service proxy objects inside Jini federations and use "Scalable Service Portal" mechanism to gather service proxy objects from different Jini federations. In our service portal system, we implement two application services to determine the reliability of the system. They are Stock Market System and Motor vehicles Presentation System.

Estimation algorithm for autonomous aerial refueling using a vision based relative navigation system

A new impetus to develop autonomous aerial refueling has arisen out of the growing demand to expand the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). With autonomous aerial refueling, UAVs can retain the advantages of being small, inexpensive, and expendable, while offering superior range and loiter-time capabilities. VisNav, a vision based sensor, offers the accuracy and reliability needed in order to provide relative navigation information for autonomous probe and drogue aerial refueling for UAVs. This thesis develops a Kalman filter to be used in combination with the VisNav sensor to improve the quality of the relative navigation solution during autonomous probe and drogue refueling. The performance of the Kalman filter is examined in a closed-loop autonomous aerial refueling simulation which includes models of the receiver aircraft, VisNav sensor, Reference Observer-based Tracking Controller (ROTC), and atmospheric turbulence. The Kalman filter is tuned and evaluated for four aerial refueling scenarios which simulate docking behavior in the absence of turbulence, and with light, moderate, and severe turbulence intensity. The docking scenarios demonstrate that, for a sample rate of 100 Hz, the tuning and performance of the filter do not depend on the intensity of the turbulence, and the Kalman filter improves the relative navigation solution from VisNav by as much as 50% during the early stages of the docking maneuver. For the aerial refueling scenarios modeledin this thesis, the addition of the Kalman filter to the VisNav/ROTC structure resulted in a small improvement in the docking accuracy and precision. The Kalman filter did not, however, significantly improve the probability of a successful docking in turbulence for the simulated aerial refueling scenarios.

Analysis of Emergency Physicians' Perception and Application of Evidence-Based Medicine

The purposes of this study were to understand emergency physicians¡¦ perception, attitude and application of evidence-based medicine(EBM). This cross-sectional study employed quantitative methods. Regarding the quantitative method, the study population included emergency physicians in southern Taiwan of 32 participating hospitals. Structured questionnaires were sent to emergency physicians, a total of 214 questionnaires were distributed with 189 questionnaires being returned. The response rate was 88.32%. Descriptive statistics was used in data analysis. The major findings were: 1. Emergency physician¡¦s perception of EBM: The average score in Physicians¡¦ understanding EBM terminologies were from 1.88 to 2.79(score ranged from 1 to 4, 1 represented fully understand). 2. Emergency physician¡¦s attitude of EBM: a. There were over a half (57.7%) emergency physicians had taken EBM training courses, while 93.1% expressed their willingness to attend EBM activities in the future. b. Most emergency physicians(86.7%) agreed that application of EBM was useful in clinical practice. c. The major barriers of emergency physicians to apply EBM were lack of time(57.1%), lack of EBM knowledge(50.3%), lack of research methodology knowledge(45.5%) and hardness of critical appraisal(40.7%). d. In general, emergency physicians hold positive attitudes toward EBM, the average score was from 1.79 to 3.09 (score ranged from 1 to 5, 1 represented the most agree). 3. Emergency physician¡¦s application of EBM: a. The average proportion of EBM application in emergency physicians¡¦ clinical practice was 54.42% . b. Emergency physician¡¦s choice of clinical problem-treating was diverse, only little clinical problem may have uniform opinions.

Efficient Implementation of a Function Generator Based on Look-up Table

In many digital signal processing applications, we often need some special function units that can compute complicated arithmetic functions such as reciprocal, square-root, base-2 logarithm, power of 2, trigonometric functions, etc. The most popular design approaches to compute these single-value functions are based on look-up tables (LUT) with interpolation. In general, there are two different types of LUT-based method: piecewise and multipartite. As the required bit accuracy increases, the size of LUT increases exponentially. In this thesis, we will develop a generator that can automatically synthesize suitable hardware to compute these special arithmetic functions given the required bit accuracy. In particular, higher-order piecewise method will be supported to reduce the table size for high-accuracy applications. The synthesized arithmetic units are used in the design of a vertex shader for 3D graphics application.

A Study to Evaluate the Suitability of a Centrifuge as a Dynamic Flight Simulator for F/A-18 Strike Fighter Mission Training

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of using an existing 25-ft radius centrifuge as a dynamic flight simulator for “full mission” F/A-18 strike fighter mission training with respect to the representativeness of pilot-perceived motion and acceleration cues.The methodology employed in this study consisted of analyzing F/A-18 mission tasks, collecting pilot opinion surveys of important sensory cues needed in simulator training, and conducting an analysis of human pilot perceptual problems caused by centrifuge motion constraints.This study identified a number of issues indicating that a centrifuge-based flight simulator shows limited potential for use in “full mission” F/A-18 training scenarios. Specifically, there is a fundamental mismatch between the 6 degree-of-freedom mission-representative acceleration environment experienced in the aircraft and the 3 degree-of-freedom acceleration environment the centrifuge is able to provide. The centrifuge is not optimized for the typical acceleration environment experienced during F/A-18 missions and has significant limitations in “near one g” and “near zero g” flight conditions. Additionally, the centrifuge causes a variety of undesired, unrealistic, and debilitating vestibular artifacts that are not consistent with what a pilot experiences in the aircraft when performing the same mission task, degrading the effectiveness of training.Despite its limited suitability as a “full mission” F/A-18 simulator, the centrifuge is an essential physiological training device, shows good potential as a part-task trainer for departure/spin training, and should continue to play a role in the F/A-18 training continuum.
