Methods and Tools for Battery-free Wireless Networks

Geißdörfer, Kai 15 November 2022 (has links)
Embedding small wireless sensors into the environment allows for monitoring physical processes with high spatio-temporal resolutions. Today, these devices are equipped with a battery to supply them with power. Despite technological advances, the high maintenance cost and environmental impact of batteries prevent the widespread adoption of wireless sensors. Battery-free devices that store energy harvested from light, vibrations, and other ambient sources in a capacitor promise to overcome the drawbacks of (rechargeable) batteries, such as bulkiness, wear-out and toxicity. Because of low energy input and low storage capacity, battery-free devices operate intermittently; they are forced to remain inactive for most of the time charging their capacitor before being able to operate for a short time. While it is known how to deal with intermittency on a single device, the coordination and communication among groups of multiple battery-free devices remain largely unexplored. For the first time, the present thesis addresses this problem by proposing new methods and tools to investigate and overcome several fundamental challenges.

The Feasibility, Reliable Communication And Networking Aspects Of Passive Wireless Sensor Networks

Yagli, Mehmet 01 September 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The primary challenge in wireless sensor network (WSN) deployment is the limited network lifetime due to the finite-capacity batteries. In accordance with this challenge, the vast majority of research efforts thus far have focused on the development of energy-efficient communication and computing mechanisms for WSNs. In this thesis, a fundamentally different approach and hence completely new WSN paradigm, i.e., the Passive Wireless Sensor Network (PWSN), is introduced. The objective of PWSN is to eliminate the limitation on the system lifetime of the WSNs. In PWSN, power is externally supplied to the sensor network node via an external RF source. Hence, the lifetime of the system is no longer determined by the lifetime of the batteries. An alternative communication scheme, modulated backscattering, is also discussed to be utilized in PWSN. The feasibility of the proposed system is investigated along with the open research challenges for reliable communication and networking in PWSN. Additionally, a new medium access schemee for PWSN, Ultra-Wideband PWSN Medium Access Control (UWB PWSN MAC), is presented.

Towards Long-Range Backscatter Communication with Tunnel Diode Reflection Amplifiers

Eriksson, Gustav January 2018 (has links)
Backscatter communication enables wireless communication at a power consumption orders of magnitude lower than conventional wireless communication. Instead of generating new RF-signals backscatter communication leverages ambient signals, such as WiFi-, Bluetooth- or TV-signals, and reflects them by changing the impedance of the antenna. Backscatter communication is known as a short-range communication technique achieving ranges in the order of meters. To improve the communication range, we explore the use of a tunnel diode as an amplifier of the backscattered RF-signal. We developed the amplifier on a PCB-board together with a matching network tuned to give maximum gain at 868 MHz. Our work demonstrates that the 1N3712 tunnel diode can achieve gains up to 35 dB compared to a tag without amplification while having a peak power consumption of 48 μW. With this amplifier the communication distance can be increased by up to two orders of magnitude.

Towards Battery-free Radio Tomographic Imaging : Battery-free Boundary Crossing Detection

Hylamia, Abdullah January 2018 (has links)
Radio tomographic imaging (RTI) is a novel device-free localization technique which utilizes the changes in radio signals caused by obstruction to enable various sensing applications. However, the deployment of these applications is hindered by the energy-expensive radio sensing techniques employed in these systems. In this thesis, we tackle this issue by introducing a novel way to realize a battery-free RTI sensor. We go through the design process and produce and evaluate a working prototype that operates on minuscule amounts of energy. Our design reduces power consumption by orders of magnitude compared to traditional RTI sensors by eliminating the energy-expensive components used in current RTI systems, enabling battery-free operation of RTI sensors. We demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of our system in a boundary crossing scenario. We Discuss its limitations and tackle some of the security threats correlated with the deployment of such a system.
