Exploring Baxter Robot and Development of Python algorithms to Execute Holding, Lifting and Positioning TasksAndersson, Rabé January 2019 (has links)
The greatest feature of using a Baxter robot among other industrial robots is the ability to train this robot conveniently. The training of the robot could be done within a few minutes and it does not need so much knowledge of programming. However, this type of training feature is limited in functionality and needs frequent updating of the software and the license from the manufactural company. As the manufacturer of Baxter Robot no longer exists due to a merger, the thesis has twofold aims, (1) Exploring different functional, installation, calibration, troubleshooting and hardware features of the Baxter robot and (2) demonstrate the functionality of Baxter to perform general tasks of holding, lifting and moving of test objects from one desired position to another position using custom-made programs in Python. Owing to this, details about different software and hardware aspects of Baxter robot is presented in this thesis. Additionally, systematic laboratory tutorials are also presented in appendices for students who want to learn and operate the robot from simple to complicated tasks. In order to keep the Baxter operational for students and researchers in future, when there is no more help available from its manufacturer, this thesis endeavour to cover all these aspects. Thus, the thesis presents a brief understanding of how to use the Baxter Robot in a simple and efficient way to perform a basic industrial task. The kinematics part will show the concepts of forward and inverse kinematics and the DH (the Denavit–Hartenberg) parameters that are important to understand the end-effector position according to the world frame that will give the knowledge of those who are interested in the kinematics part of Baxter robot. The work of the thesis will make it easier to understand how to program a Baxter robot by using Python language and using the simplest way to move the arm to certain positions. The ROS principles, kinematics and Python language programs will provide a good platform to understand the usability of Baxter robot. Furthermore, easy to use laboratory tutorials are devised and are presented in the appendices. These laboratory tutorials will improve the understanding of the readers and provide a step-by-step guide of operating Baxter robot according to the principles of Robotics. In addition to all these points above, the thesis shows useful functions that are built in ROS (Robot Operating System) that make it easier to program the robot in an untraditional way which is one of a contribution of this thesis itself. The usual way to program the robots, in general, is to study the robot kinematics and calculate the position of the end-effector or the tool according to some frame or the world coordinate frame. This calculation can be done by the forward kinematics or the inverse kinematics. The set of programming Baxter robot in this thesis is not the complex calculation of the forward or the inverse kinematics. The tf (transform)tool in ROS has made it easier to reach the joint angles and program Baxter robot using Python.

Sir Philip Baxter, Engineer: The Fabric of a Conservative Style of ThoughtGissing, Philip, School of Science & Technology Studies, UNSW January 1999 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the life and career of Sir Philip Baxter (1905-1989), particularly during the period following his arrival in Australia from England in 1950. But the thesis is not a conventional biographical study in terms of either the sources used or its guiding themes. Instead, my subject's values and attitudes are portrayed as reflections of a 'conservative style of thought', a concept developed by Karl Mannheim. This approach, centred on close readings of key texts, permits a deeper understanding of a figure who polarised opinion over a long career as Chairman of the Australian Atomic Energy Commission, and as Vice-Chancellor of the University of NSW. My picture of Baxter draws significantly on the Archives of the University of NSW, which provided the bulk of my primary sources, such as correspondence files, typescripts of articles and talks, newspaper clippings, official documents and personal memorabilia. This material is a substantial but curiously unrevealing source for Baxter's life. Although I rely largely on written material, on several important occasions I refer to discussions I had with Baxter's children, colleagues and students. Insights thereby gained into Baxter's childhood reading, and the circumstances of the composition of his play, The Day the Sun Rose in the West, profoundly influenced my portrayal of Baxter. Throughout, I argue for an appreciation of the significance of such material, even though in a more conventional study of an engineer/administrator it would be thought of only marginal interest. In Baxter's case, certainly, careful interpretation of such material enables the construction of a compelling portrait of the man despite the unrevealing primary records and the still often fervently partisan personal recollections of those who knew him. My major conclusion is that previous characterisations of Baxter as a cold war warrior of the post-war period in Australia have failed to appreciate the complexity and coherence of his attitudes and philosophy. Secondly, I demonstrate that the notion of a 'conservative style of thought' captures that complexity as evidenced in the many facets of Baxter's career and interests.

Evaluating sediment cap performance with PDMS profilers : field study of McCormick and Baxter Superfund SiteKuriakose, Liz 21 December 2010 (has links)
During the Fall of 2009, a pilot study was conducted at the McCormick and Baxter (M&B) Superfund Site to evaluate polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) profilers as a method for sediment cap performance monitoring. The profilers are shielded solid phase microextraction fibers, silica rods coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the sorbent. The deployment explored whether profiling PDMS could be used as a low impact, highly sensitive, long term monitoring strategy at M&B since the sediment operable unit will be transitioning to the “Operable & Maintenance” phase of Superfund cleanup.
To evaluate sediment cap performance, a good understanding of the flux of contaminants from the sediment is required. While surface waters can illustrate this flux, they can also contain contaminants originating from upstream sources. The existing sampling plan at M&B uses a conventional porewater pumping sampling technique that measures both dissolved and particulate fractions. PDMS profilers measure only the freely dissolved fraction which has been shown to be a good indicator of bioavailability. These profilers also have lower detection limits (ng/L) and the ability to measure vertical concentration gradients which can help identify sources and mechanisms of the contamination.
Each sampler was analyzed at three depths for the USEPA Priority Pollutant List of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PDMS measurements showed clear vertical profiling with large reductions in PAH concentrations through the sediment cap offshore. Nearshore, uniform concentration profiles were observed indicating increased vertical mixing as a result of tidal smearing. Further, ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer HSD analysis of sample variability revealed PAH concentrations were statistically different at two locations compared to the remainder of the sampling locations- indicating areas requiring closer attention.
PDMS profilers were co-located at 13 of the 22 conventional porewater extraction sampling locations. The correlation of PDMS and conventional porewater extraction techniques was limited due to the low detection frequency by conventional porewater extraction methods as a result of the higher detection limits by that method. The correlation was good for light molecular weight PAHs with most measurements of the same order of magnitude and improved with increasing depth (due to the greater number of detections). 72% of the direct comparisons between PDMS-derived and conventionally-derived porewater concentrations were of the same order of magnitude. Any comparison between the two datasets is necessarily limited especially for the higher molecular weight PAHs, however, due to the large number of non-detects in the conventionally collected data. / text

DIVISIONS BETWEEN ARKANSANS IN THE BROOKS-BAXTER WARKraemer, Michael William 01 January 2012 (has links)
Many historians have failed to consider seriously the role of the Brooks-Baxter War of 1874 in ending Reconstruction in Arkansas. Of those who have, they have not examined participants in the conflict nor attempted a robust study to determine who fought in the conflict. This thesis examines the soldiers and officers of the rival armies of Joseph Brooks and Elisha Baxter. It surveys the participants' class, race, professions, places of birth, and especially places of residence at the time of the conflict. This analysis of the Brooks-Baxter War reaffirms other historians' work on the fall of Reconstruction, while finding unique characteristics to Arkansas's redemption, like substantial support from white Arkansans for upholding Reconstruction and instances of black Arkansans supporting the redeemer army of Elisha Baxter. It concludes that Arkansas redemption was typical of other redemptions in the South in the mid-1870s, insofar as the powerful role that the state Democratic Party and Democratic elites played in ending Reconstruction in the state. The Brooks-Baxter War shows, however, that redemption in Arkansas had a more moderate face in that explicit, naked white supremacist rhetoric was not as apparent in the overthrow of Reconstruction there as in some other Deep Southern states.

Generalized Differential and Integral CategoriesDelaney, Christopher January 2018 (has links)
This paper provides two generalizations of differential and integral categories: Leibniz and generalized Rota-Baxter categories, which capture certain algebraic structures, and q-categories, which capture structures of quantum calculus. In the search for new examples of differential and integral categories, it was observed that many structures were not quite examples but satisfied certain properties and not others. This leads us to the definition of Leibniz, Rota-Baxter and proto-FTC categories. In generalizing Rota-Baxter categories further to an arbitrary weight, we show that we recapture Ribenboim's generalized power series as a monad on vector spaces with a generalized integral transformation. This also subsumes the renormalization operator on Laurent series, which has applications in the quantum realm. Finally, we define quantum differential and quantum integral categories, show that they recapture the usual notions of quantum calculus on polynomials, and construct a new example to indicate their potential usefulness outside of that specific setting

Richard Baxter's contribution to the comprehension controversy : a study in projected church union /Brown, Earl Kent January 1956 (has links)

s / The study was conceived as an investigation of the thought and activity of Richard Baxter in the area of church union and cooperation. The dissertation is based primarily on Baxter's autobiography, the extensive writings of Baxter himself dealing with this problem, and the writings of Baxter's contemporaries. Secondarily it is based on the works of Baxter's biographers, the standard works on the history of Protectorate and Restoration England, and a number of special studies on various aspects of Restoration church life. The method has been historical and descriptive. The author has not attempted to prove a point but rather to provide a correct chronological narrative of the development of one aspect of the thought and actions of perhaps the leading English churchman of his day.
In the course of the study four things appeared, which we may adopt as a means of organizing this abstract. The four are the following: (1) a descriptive historical survey of Baxter's thought and activity in the church union area; (2) the reasons for his Nonconformity; (3) the changes in Anglican usage he deemed desirable to achieve comprehension -i.e. the inclusion of the Puritans in the Establishment; (4) the terms he deemed the minimum acceptable to achieve a comprehension.
Baxter resisted the narrowness of spirit which characterized his age to give expression to broad principles and an inclusive spirit. Dealing with issues which remain matters of contention, he maintained a breadth of vision and a dream of unity which would be notable in 1956, but which is altogether amazing when viewed against the backdrop of Restoration England.
