"Kvinnan ska eftersträva skönhet enligt rådande ideal" : En analys av myter i VeckoRevyns frågespalter

Brännström, Andrea January 2013 (has links)
This essay is an analysis of mythologies in the Swedish women´s magazine VeckoRevyn. The magazine’s own explicit purpose is to break down the unhealthy opinion of what beauty is in their industry today. By content and linguistic analysis the results of this study are interconnected to the beauty myth as it was established by Naomi Wolf in 1991. The goal is to pinpoint how VeckoRevyn’s question and answer columns construct relationships to their readers, and the mythologies that they maintain. The columns mostly focus on the readers’ physical appearance, and the beauty myth is clearly an inevitable influence. The main conclusion that can be drawn from this is that the beauty myth is hard-wired into our society’s subconscious. VeckoRevyn is working to prevent this, and even though they have not fully succeeded, they are a part of bringing the phenomenon to the surface of society.

Mýtus ženské krásy / Myth of female beauty

Česká, Michaela January 2014 (has links)

Bagatur, Sine 01 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to investigate women&amp / #8217 / s double-way relation to consumption, as both consumers and commodities. The major goal of the study is to examine the historical construction of women as pimary consuming class and how this relationship of women to consumption has evolved through time. Moreover, it is claimed that display of women as visual objects of male gaze in visual iconography, ideologies of beauty and body politics on women&amp / #8217 / s appearances resulted in commodification of women in the modern consumer culture. Additionally, a brief analysis of Turkish print advertisements for the period 1930-1970 is attempted with a view to demonstrating how Turkish middle-class women have been incorporated into newly emerging consumer culture and how this integration process has been perceived by advertisers.

Kult povrchu: analýza časopisu Top dívky z perspektivy mýtu krásy / Cult of surface: analysis of girl magazine Top divky from the perspective of the beauty myth

Hanzlíková, Terezie January 2015 (has links)
The thesis deals with the beauty myth and its presentation in Top dívky girl magazine. It focuses on revealing mechanisms used by the magazine to attract girls' attention, and their gender consequences. Observing both analogical and contrasting traits of presenting the beauty myth to girls and women is an important part of the thesis. In its theoretical part, the author begins by presenting the ongoing discussion on the beauty myth led by Naomi Wolf (2000), the feminist theorist. The basic theoretical framework for this thesis is Wolf's proposition of the "female" beauty myth, which subsequently helps the author to examine the "girlish" beauty myth. In her research, the author uses open, axial and selective coding. By determining the central category of Cult of surface, the thesis unveils the essential message of the beauty myth in Top dívky. The surface is the main aspect not only of girls' appearance, but also of their relationships and interests. The functioning of the cult of surface is enabled by the discourse of easiness and the accessibility of beautification, which the thesis considers as a very important aspect of the beauty myth in the girl magazine. Basic propositions on the female beauty myth apply to girls as well, however, there are certain nuances to consider, which the author also...

Komparativní studie obrazu ženské krásy v lifestylových časopisech pro ženy a pro muže: Analýza portrétů žen na fotografiích ve vybraných časopisech v první polovině roku 2012 / Comparative study of a presentation of women's beauty in lifestyle magazines for men and women:

Nunvářová, Petra January 2014 (has links)
The diploma thesis Comparative study of a presentation of women's beauty in lifestyle magazines for men and women suggests the hypothesis that the image of women's beauty is modified according to the target group of the media. As to support or falsify the thought, there are analysed chosen photographs of women in four Czech lifestyle magazines, specifically in ELLE, ForMen, Cosmopolitan and Esquire. Chosen method of semiotic analysis and description helps define the differences between image of women's beauty in the pictures. In order to interpret the pictures in broader context, the first half of work deals with the development of aesthetic theories and various scientific views of beauty as well as theories about presumed media influence. The results of the analysis are interpreted and explained on the grounds the theoretical base. Besides the evaluation of the primary hypotheses there are also noted other theoretical findings. The document is closed by comments of authoress on the issue based on already written theories.

Představy o kráse ženského těla ve veřejném prostoru první republiky / Visions of the beauty of female body in the public sphere during the first republic

Ručková, Eliška January 2015 (has links)
6 Abstract The presented thesis deals with the portrayal of female beauty or rather of how it was seen and what was believed to be the essence of it in the time of the first republic. The basic presumption I work with is that the ideal of beauty is culturally, socially and historically conditioned as well as is its appraisal. A goal of this paper is to analyze and to compare images of beauty described in woman magazines of the Czech production which were published during 20s and 30s of last century, a period in which the media already have been contributing to the creation and reproduction of normative femininity, stereotypes and standards of physical appearance significantly. Now the development of mass communication technology could lead to the spread of the ideal image of female beauty among the public and so in this way patterns of femininity became the part of everyday life in society. Key words: ideal of female beauty, body, beauty myth, gender, gender stereotypes, media

Issues of the magazine, published in 2009 and on, is analyzed and dissected to better understand and be able to get answers for the questions of issue. What is said in the magazine, and how does the message reach the audience? Furthermore, the message, as well as the tone used to convey it, is reviewed as part of the discussion about consequence. The goal of this study is to show how, based on the material analyzed, a woman is spoken to in the magazine, and what kind of consequences this might have.</p><p>VeckoRevyn claims it desires tobea close friend to its readers, a friend who enlightens and guides. But the fact is that in every case studied, there is an underlying message on how the readers have the chance to reach something better and more desirable based on her looks and appearance. How is this possible when in fact the magazine creates an artificial reality filled with unattainable ideals? This results in more stress in the lives of women, who constantly long to be “good enough”. The idea of beauty, which is a common theme throughout the issues of the magazine, is unfortunately based on a myth. This in turn results in mental exhaustion, a twisted self- image, low self esteem, anorexia and bulimia among its young female audience.</p><p>Keywords: weekly magazine, VeckoRevyn, content, tone, the beauty myth, ideals, consequences</p>
